The occupational impact of sleep quality and insomnia symptoms.

While the importance of assessing the occupational consequences of insomnia is emphasized in clinical nosologies and research guidelines, there is little consensus on which aspects of occupational performance should be assessed, the most methodologically justifiable measures of insomnia and work performance, and how outcomes should be reported. The present review was designed to summarize and methodologically critique the assessment of those aspects of occupational performance most impacted by (or most frequently associated with) insomnia symptoms. The 30 studies which met the review inclusion

Chronic illness and subjective quality of sleep in the elderly.

The effect of chronic illness on the subjective quality of sleep, and the use of hypnotics was studied in a stratified random sample of elderly people. Six hundred subjects aged 65 years or over were included in the study. A structured interview on the quality of sleep and medical history was carried out. In addition, the majority of diagnoses were confirmed from the national health insurance documents of the subjects. Logistic regression analysis disclosed that only perceived poor health and peptic ulcer or esophagitis were associated with perceived poor sleep. Age did not contribute to the q

Transvenous phrenic nerve stimulation improves central sleep apnea, sleep quality, and quality of life regardless of prior positive airway pressure treatment.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy for central sleep apnea (CSA) is often poorly tolerated, ineffective, or contraindicated. Transvenous phrenic nerve stimulation (TPNS) offers an alternative, although its impact on previously PAP-treated patients with CSA has not been examined. METHODS: TPNS responses among PAP-naïve and prior PAP-treated patients from the remedē® System Pivotal Trial were assessed. Of 151, 56 (37%) used PAP therapy before enrolling in the trial. Patients were implanted with a TPNS device and randomized to either active or deferred (control) therapy for

Subjective sleep quality, but not objective sleep measures, mediates the relationship between pre-sleep worrying and affective wellbeing.

Pre-sleep worrying is associated with sleep disturbance, which in turn is associated with impaired affective wellbeing. However, studies examining the fine-grained temporal order of these variables are still lacking. In particular, within-person mediation of the association between pre-sleep worrying and the following day's affective wellbeing by subjective and objective indicators of sleep has not been tested yet. This study investigates the extent to which pre-sleep worrying predicts positive/negative affect the following day, and whether subjective/objective sleep disturbances are possible

Sleep quality and quality of life in patients with dermatological diseases during the war in Gaza.

Skin diseases such as psoriasis and scabies can severely impact sleep quality and quality of life (QoL), especially under extreme stress conditions such as war. During the 2024 conflict in Gaza, displacement, limited access to healthcare, and widespread trauma created a unique context in which to study these interactions. This cross-sectional study included 498 participants from three healthcare centers across Gaza. Data on dermatological diagnoses, sleep quality (PSQI), quality of life (DLQI/CDLQI), pain levels, and displacement history were collected. Statistical analyses were performed to e

Sleep quality and asthma control and quality of life in non-severe and severe asthma.

PURPOSE: The effect of sleep quality on asthma control independent from common comorbidities like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is unknown. This study examined the association between sleep quality and asthma control and quality of life after accounting for OSA and GERD in non-severe (NSA) and severe (SA) asthma. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 60 normal controls, 143 with NSA, and 79 with SA participating in the Severe Asthma Research Program was examined. Those who reported using positive airway pressure therapy or were at high risk for OSA were

Concordance of wearable device sleep metrics with patient-reported sleep quality: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Commercial wearable devices increasingly monitor sleep, but their concordance with patient-reported sleep quality remains poorly characterized. This systematic review evaluates concordance between wearable sleep metrics and validated subjective measures. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library through October 2025 for studies comparing consumer wrist-worn actigraphy-based devices with validated subjective sleep quality measures in adults (≥18 years). Two reviewers independently performed screening, extraction, and QUADAS-2 qua

Rosacea, poor sleep quality, and obstructive sleep apnea: A commentary on potential interconnected features.

Although rosacea is classically considered a skin disorder, recent evidence shows that it is emerging as a systemic disease. The classical symptoms of burning, intense erythema, and flushing could be related to several systemic and metabolic comorbidities. We highlight the role of sleep disturbance as a possible trigger for rosacea, which could be explained by the inflammatory and stressful conditions that can be produced by poor sleep. In particular, we call attention to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common multisystemic sleep disorder; it could be linked with rosacea in the context of the

Prevalence of poor sleep quality, sleepiness and obstructive sleep apnoea risk factors in athletes.

PURPOSE: Despite the perceived importance of sleep for athletes, little is known regarding athlete sleep quality, their prevalence of daytime sleepiness or risk factors for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) such as snoring and witnessed apnoeic episodes. The purpose of the present study was to characterise normative sleep quality among highly trained team sport athletes. METHODOLOGY: 175 elite or highly trained rugby sevens, rugby union and cricket athletes completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Score (ESS) and Quality of Life questionnaires and an OSA risk facto

Adaptive servo-ventilation therapy of central sleep apnoea and its effect on sleep quality.

OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep quality is common in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). This study tested the hypothesis that adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) therapy in CHF patients whose central sleep apnoea (CSA) was not suppressed by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) (CPAP-non-responders) would improve sleep quality compared to CPAP-responders receiving ongoing CPAP therapy. METHODS: Eighty-two patients with CHF (65 ± 9 years, left ventricular ejection fraction 35 ± 16 %) and CSA [apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) ≥15/h] were retrospectively studied. Within an average of 47 days, patie

More severe hypoxemia is associated with better subjective sleep quality in obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Perceived sleep quality may play an important role in diagnosis and therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, few studies have assessed factors that are associated with perceived sleep quality in OSA patients. Hypoxemia depresses the central nervous system and attenuates the perceived respiratory load in asthmatic patients. This study aimed to investigate the factors related to perceived sleep quality, focusing on the role of hypoxemia. METHODS: Polysomnography studies of 156 OSA patients were reviewed. Traditional polysomnographic parameters, including parameters of oxy

Sleep Quality in Spanish Adult Women: Associations with Sociodemographic Variables and Pre-Sleep Habits.

Background/Objectives: Sleep health is a key determinant of physical and psychological well-being, yet poor sleep quality remains common, particularly among women. Sociodemographic inequalities and culturally patterned pre-sleep behaviours may contribute to sleep disturbances, but their combined role in Mediterranean populations is still insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine sleep quality and its associations with sociodemographic characteristics and pre-sleep habits among adult women living in Spain. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 785 Spanish adu
