A Preliminary Report: Screening Idiopathic Scoliosis (IS) With a Smartphone Application.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a 3-dimensional spinal deformity that affects ∼3.1% of the population. Current strategies for IS screening and management remain limited resulting in delayed detection and inconsistent follow-up, which can result in missed opportunities for conservative treatment and an increased likelihood of requiring surgical intervention. Early and accessible screening tools may help address these gaps. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a smartphone-based application that leverages 3D surface topography for IS screening, comparing its accuracy with r

Evaluation of the Clinical Impact of a Smartphone Application for Cataract Detection.

Background Approximately 10 million people in India suffer from bilateral blindness, with cataracts accounting for roughly 70% of these cases. However, there is a severe scarcity of ophthalmologists in India (12,000 across the country), which makes routine cataract screening very difficult, particularly in rural areas. To tackle this problem, we investigated the use of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based application for cataract screening at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bibinagar, that can be used by nursing officers and other healthcare professionals as a primary screeni

Fundoscopy in the smartphone age: current ophthalmoscopy methods in neurology.

The observation of the human retina in vivo began in 1851 after the invention of the first ophthalmoscope by the German physicist Hermann von Helmholtz. In the following decades, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, with the use of ophthalmoscopes and condensing lenses, respectively, became part of the clinical examination, especially in ophthalmology and neurology. Today, over 170 years later, many ophthalmoscopes and condensing lenses exist on the market. Nevertheless, ophthalmoscopy is still not widely adopted as part of the physical exam of general practitioners, and the teaching of ophthal

A case of severe anterograde amnesia in the era of smartphone technology.

A.V. is a young herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) survivor who suffered extensive bilateral damage to the medial temporal lobe (MTL) leading to a severe and pervasive form of anterograde amnesia. Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) revealed lesions that encompass the hippocampus and amygdala in both hemispheres and that extend more laterally in the right temporal lobe. At the same time, detailed neuropsychological testing showed that the disparity between A.V.'s preserved intellectual functioning (Full Scale IQ: 115) and severe memory deficit (Delayed Memory Index: 42) is one of the la

Contemporary Review of Smartphone Apps for Tinnitus Management and Treatment.

Tinnitus is a complex and heterogeneous psycho-physiological disorder responsible for causing a phantom ringing or buzzing sound albeit the absence of an external sound source. It has a direct influence on affecting the quality of life of its sufferers. Despite being around for a while, there has not been a cure for tinnitus, and the usual course of action for its treatment involves use of tinnitus retaining and sound therapy, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). One positive aspect about these therapies is that they can be administered face-to-face as well as delivered via internet or smart

Addiction of smartphones and related finger deformities: A case report.

Widespread and excessive use of smartphones is very common, and its overuse is associated with several health-related conditions. A 58-year-old man presented with a spontaneous swan-neck deformity of the third digit. On his physical examination, full passive range of motion of the finger was achieved, while active range of motion was limited due to pain. Laboratory test results were normal. Ultrasonographic imaging demonstrated digital extensor tenosynovitis of the second, third, fourth, and fifth digits. Plain radiographs of bilateral hands were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging of the affec

Validation of a smartphone-based event recorder for arrhythmia detection.

INTRODUCTION: Ambulatory cardiac monitoring devices such as external loop recorders (ELRs) are often used in the outpatient clinic to evaluate palpitations. However, ELRs can be bulky and uncomfortable to use, especially in public, at work, or in social situations. An alternative approach is a smartphone-based electrocardiographic (ECG) recorder/event recorder (Kardia Mobile [KM]), but the comparative diagnostic yield of each approach has not been studied. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with palpitations wore an ELR and carried a KM for a period of 14-30 days. They were instructed to transmit
