Ultrastructural alterations in gill, stomach and intestine of two coastal fish species collected from PAHs contaminated area at Digha coastal belt.

Digha is an ideal seaside resort town; its beautiful beaches attract about 2 million people/year. It is also an important site for biodiversity and fishery resources that contribute to the national economy. PAHs are the common organic pollutants in the coastal areas, especially in the harbouring areas, that pose significant risk to the coastal ecosystem as well as human health. Present study intends to analyse the probable threat of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination to the coastal ecosystem, particularly to the coastal fish species (Mystus sp. and Mugil sp.). For this we st

Molecular characterization, expression, and apoptosis regulation of siva1 in protogynous hermaphrodite fish ricefield eel (Monopterus albus).

Siva1, which induces extensive apoptosis, has been well characterized. To elucidate the molecular function of Siva1 in ricefield eel, molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis were performed, and the mRNA expression in the ovary at different developmental stages and ovary tissues exposed to H2O2 and Z-VAD-FMK in vitro were also evaluated. The results indicated that ricefield eel Siva1 was highly conserved and contains three conserved motifs, despite 83 amino acid differences upstream of the initiation codon. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that ricefield eel Siva1 clusters togeth

Host behaviour alteration by its parasite: from brain gene expression to functional test.

Many parasites with complex life cycles modify their intermediate hosts' behaviour, presumably to increase transmission to their final host. The threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is an intermediate host in the cestode Schistocephalus solidus life cycle, which ends in an avian host, and shows increased risky behaviours when infected. We studied brain gene expression profiles of sticklebacks infected with S. solidus to determine the proximal causes of these behavioural alterations. We show that infected fish have altered expression levels in genes involved in the inositol pathway.

The first record of Ligophorus Euzet & Suriano, 1977 (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) on Crenimugil buchanani (Teleostei: Muglidae) from Thailand based on morphological and molecular analyses.

Ligophorus satunensis n. sp. was collected from the bluetail mullet, Crenimugil buchanani (Bleeker, 1853), caught off Satun, Thailand, representing the first report of the Ligophorus species in Thailand. The new species is most similar to Ligophorus fenestrum Soo & Lim, 2012 in its fenestrated dorsal hamuli, a ventral bar with a long, bifurcated anteromedian protuberance (AMP) without lateral pieces, and a non-sclerotized vagina. However, it differs from the latter in its dorsal hamuli (up to two layers of fenestrations of the dorsal hamuli in L. satunensis n. sp. vs six layers in L. fenestrum

Development of specific chemiluminescent immunoassays for three subtypes of vitellogenin in grey mullet (Mugil cephalus).

Chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIAs) were developed for each of three subtypes of vitellogenin (VtgAa, VtgAb and VtgC) in grey mullet, primarily for use in monitoring estrogenic pollution of the environment. The working range of VtgAa-CLIA and VtgAb-CLIA was from 0.975 to 1,000 ng/ml, while that of VtgC-CLIA was from 0.487 to 1,000 ng/ml. Each CLIA appeared to be specific to the targeted Vtg subtype. Intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation in the developed CLIAs were lower than 10%. In male serum, VtgAa, VtgAb and VtgC were detected in ranges from 0.01 to 0.38, 0.02 to 1.01, and 0.01

Timing of Infections in the Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) by Schistocephalus solidus in Alaska.

This study provides direct evidence for the timing of infections by Schistocephalus solidus in the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) of south-central Alaska. Young-of-the-year fish in Cheney Lake were infected during their first summer within a few months after hatching in May-June. Infections appear to continue under ice cover on the lake during the subsequent fall and winter. Few, if any, 1-yr-old fish seemed to be infected for the first time, although 1-yr-old hosts with established parasites apparently acquired additional infections.

Severe scuticociliate (Philasterides dicentrarchi) infection in a population of sea dragons (Phycodurus eques and Phyllopteryx taeniolatus).

Scuticociliatosis is a disease of fish induced by ciliated parasites of the genus Scuticociliatida. It has been described in sea horses (Hippocampus sp.), flounders (Paralichthys olivaceus), and turbots (Scophthalmus maximus). Here we present a case study of a population of sea dragons chronically infected with scuticociliates identified as Philasterides dicentrarchi by histopathology and PCR. Beginning in 2004, over a period of 19 months, 10 sea dragons (Phycodurus eques and Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) were found dead in an aquarium of the Zoological Garden Basle, Switzerland. Clinically, the a

Gnathostoma infective stage larvae in swamp eels (Fluta alba) at a metropolitan market in Bangkok, Thailand.

A total of 1,788 livers from swamp eels (Fluta alba), purchased at a market in Bangkok, Thailand, from April to July 2002, were studied for the prevalence and intensity of Gnasthostoma third stage larvae (L3s). Of all livers, 466 were infected with Gnasthostoma L3s (infection rate = 26%). The larvae recovered averaged 0.43 +/- 0.51 larvae/liver. All larvae were identified as Gnasthostoma spinigerm by morphological criteria. The prevalence of G. spinigerum L3s in the eels was much higher in the rainy season (June and July, 74%) than during April and May (8%). Therefore, prevention programs for

Stickleback as a potential paratenic host in the Anisakis simplex life cycle in the Baltic Sea: results of experimental infection.

Anisakis simplex stage 3 larvae found in herring were used to experimentally infect 155 sticklebacks and 6 nine-spined sticklebacks, caught in the Gdynia marina (Gulf of Gdańsk). The larvae were observed in the fish body cavity as early as 24 h after infection, only the sticklebacks being affected. Altogether, 50 live and 2 dead larvae were found in the stickleback body cavity. The infection prevalence and mean intensity were 13.6% and 2.4 larvae, respectively, from 1 to 8 larvae per fish being recorded. It is concluded that the stickleback may serve as a paratenic host for Anisakis simplex.

Transcriptomic dynamics and immune-associated SNP discovery in Monopterus albus infected with Chinese rice-field eel rhabdovirus.

Viral infections represent a significant challenge to the health and productivity of Chinese rice-field eel (Monopterus albus) aquaculture. In this study, a 108-h preliminary experiment identified the critical immune response window between 24 and 48 h post-infection (hpi) with Chinese rice-field eel rhabdovirus (CrERV). Based on this, kidney and spleen tissues were sampled at 24 and 48 hpi for histopathological analysis using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Marked hemorrhage and tissue destruction were observed in the kidneys at 48 hpi, indicating progressive pathological damage during later

Seasonal dynamics of Caligus clemensi Infestation in European Seabass and flathead grey mullet Integrating morphological, molecular, immunological, and environmental perspectives.

This case study investigates the seasonal prevalence, morphological characteristics, molecular identity, host immune response, and environmental factors influencing Caligus clemensi infestations in farmed European seabass and flathead grey mullet at a single marine fish farm. A total of 600 fish (400 seabass, 200 mullet) were examined over one year, revealing seasonal fluctuations in parasite prevalence and intensity. C. clemensi infestation peaked in winter for seabass (75 % prevalence) and spring for grey mullet (80 % prevalence), with notable declines in summer and autumn for both species.

Lack of genetic structure in euryhaline Chelon labrosus from the estuaries under anthropic pressure in the Southern Bay of Biscay to the coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Over the last decade, xenoestrogenic effects have been reported in populations of thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus from contaminated estuaries in the Bay of Biscay, resulting in intersex condition. To understand the level of gene flow in individuals of different Basque estuaries microsatellite markers were used to evaluate the population structure and connectivity of C. labrosus from estuaries of the Basque coast. 46 microsatellites were tested and 10 validated for the analysis of 204 individuals collected from 5 selected Basque estuaries and 2 outgroups in the Bay of Cadiz and Thermaic Gu

A novel c.1759T>G variant in follicle-stimulating hormone-receptor gene is concordant with male determination in the flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus).

Various master key regulators (MKRs) that control a binary switch of sex determination (SD) have been found in fish; these provide an excellent model for the study of vertebrate genetic SD. The SD region in flathead grey mullet has been previously mapped to a 1 Mbp region harboring 27 genes, of which one is follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (fshr). Although this gene is involved in gonad differentiation and function, it has not been considered as an MKR of SD. We systematically investigated polymorphism in mullet fshr using DNA shotgun sequences, and compared them between males and females

Challenge for macrophages and mast cells of Chelon ramada to counter an intestinal microparasite, Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa).

Thinlip mullet Chelon ramada is the most abundant mullet species found in the Comacchio lagoons (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). Histological and ultrastructural sections of the intestine of C. ramada showed that over 83% of 48 mullets were infected with the intestinal parasite Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa). In histological sections, plasmodia of M. mugchelo containing mature spores were situated closer to mucosal folds and were surrounded by numerous mast cells (MCs). Mature spores, generally oval in shape, were observed in the paracellular space among the enterocytes or within them. Near the i

New species and new genus of Pseudohaploporinae (Digenea): Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. and Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. n. (Digenea: Pseudohaploporinae) from Vietnamese mullet fish.

Two new species of Pseudohaploporinae, Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. and Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. n., are described from intestines of the Vietnamese mullet fish Moolgarda seheli and Osteomugil cunnesius, respectively. Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. differs from two known Pseudohaploporus species, P. vietnamensis and P. planiliza, by the absence of a diverticulate hermaphroditic duct and muscular sphincters at the proximal end of the hermaphroditic sac. Metrically, P. pusitestis sp. n. is close to P. vietnamensis and differs from this species and from P. planilizum by lower

Experimental parasite community ecology: intraspecific variation in a large tapeworm affects community assembly.

Non-random species associations occur in naturally sampled parasite communities. The processes resulting in predictable community structure (e.g. particular host behaviours, cross-immunity, interspecific competition) could be affected by traits that vary within a parasite species, like growth or antigenicity. We experimentally infected three-spined sticklebacks with a large tapeworm (Schistocephalus solidus) that impacts the energy needs, foraging behaviour and immune reactions of its host. The tapeworms came from two populations, characterized by high or low growth in sticklebacks. Our goal w

Human-induced eutrophication maintains high parasite prevalence in breeding threespine stickleback populations.

Anthropogenic activities are having profound impacts on species interactions, with further consequences for populations and communities. We investigated the influence that anthropogenic eutrophication has on the prevalence of the parasitic tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus in threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus populations. We caught stickleback from four areas along the coast of Finland, and within each area from one undisturbed and one eutrophied habitat. We found the prevalence of the parasite to be lower in the eutrophied habitats at the start of the breeding season, probably beca

The rise and fall of an epizootic of the diphyllobothriidean cestode Schistocephalus pungitii infecting the ninespine stickleback.

Epizootics of diphyllobothriidean cestodes appear to be simple, but deceptive similarity conceals the myriad ways in which these events are shaped by complex abiotic and biotic interactions. In Dog Bone Lake, Alaska, an epizootic of Schistocephalus pungitii infecting the ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) was short-lived. Its duration, with a peak that lasted only 1 yr, was shorter than for previously documented epizootics in Schistocephalus solidus . The ability of the ninespine stickleback to sustain infections, which appears to be related to species-specific characteristics of the

The effect of octopaminergic compounds on the behaviour and transmission of Gyrodactylus.

BACKGROUND: The high transmission potential of species belonging to the monogenean parasite genus Gyrodactylus, coupled with their high fecundity, allows them to rapidly colonise new hosts and to increase in number. One gyrodactylid, Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957, has been responsible for devastation of Altantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) populations in a number of Norwegian rivers. Current methods of eradicating G. salaris from river systems centre around the use of non-specific biocides, such as rotenone and aluminium sulphate.Although transmission routes in gyrodactylids have been studie

Biological shifts of endemic pearl mullet (Alburnus tarichi) during spawning migration between a highly alkaline soda lake and a river.

Lake Van is the largest lake in Türkiye (3.775 km2) and the world's largest soda lake. Pearl mullet (Alburnus tarichi), also known as the Van fish, is endemic to Lake Van and is accepted as an endangered species. Pearl mullet migrate from Lake Van to the freshwater streams in spring for spawning. This study aimed to investigate the responses of the antioxidant, osmoregulation, and energy metabolism and also the histological changes in pearl mullets before and after spawning. Fish were sampled in the mouth of the River Karasu for the pre-spawning and the upper part of the river for post-spawnin
