Loss of smell and taste: a new marker of COVID-19? Tracking reduced sense of smell during the coronavirus pandemic using search trends.

OBJECTIVES: It has been demonstrated that reduction in smell and/or taste is the most predictive symptom in SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19 infection. We used Google Trends to analyze regional searches relating to loss of smell and taste across Italy, Spain, France, Brazil, and the United States of America and determined the association with reported Covid-19 cases. METHODS: In order to retrieve the data, we built a Python software program that provides access to Google Trends data via an application program interface. Daily COVID-19 case data for subregions of the five countries selected were retrieved

Identification of genes associated with smell dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) predominantly affects individuals above the age of 50 and currently lacks curative treatments. Although motor symptoms classically define PD, non-motor symptoms (NMS) frequently manifest earlier. In this study, we first investigated the potential of NMS to distinguish PD patients from healthy controls (HC). Machine learning-based feature ranking applied to clinical data identified olfactory dysfunction, quantified using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), as the most informative predictor distinguishing PD patients from HC. To further eluc

The sound of smell: crossmodal correspondences between sound and odor.

INTRODUCTION: Crossmodal correspondence plays a subtle yet important role in how we perceive and interpret our environment. Sounds and smells, in particular, might co-occur in our daily lives (e.g., spraying a perfume), yet their interaction remains underexplored. Understanding how these modalities interact can inform multisensory design and sensory marketing. This study investigates whether affects indirectly mediate crossmodal associations between sounds and odors. METHODS: We conducted three experiments. In Experiments 1 and 2, 61 and 60 participants respectively classified 80 sounds and 2

Association of COVID-19 Vaccination With Changes in Smell and Taste.

Since the introduction of vaccines for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in the United States, there has been significant vaccine hesitancy, in part due to fear of adverse effects. We sought to investigate the rates of smell and taste changes after COVID-19 vaccination compared to other common vaccines. Our study cohort included individuals identified by Current Procedural Terminology code in the TriNetX database receiving the COVID-19 first series, COVID-19 booster, influenza, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (TDAP), or pneumococcal vaccines between December 15, 2020, and August 1

An Epigenetic Locus Associated with Loss of Smell in COVID-19.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Loss of smell, also known as anosmia, is a prevalent and often prolonged symptom following infection with SARS-CoV-2. While many patients regain olfactory function within weeks, a significant portion experience persistent anosmia lasting over a year post-infection. The underlying mechanisms responsible for this sensory deficit remain largely uncharacterized. Previous studies, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS), have identified genetic variants near the UGT2A1 and UGT2A2 genes that are linked to anosmia in COVID-19 patients. However, the role of epigenetic changes

Prevalence and correlates of parosmia and phantosmia among smell disorders.

Among those many individuals who experience a reduced odor sensitivity (hyposmia/anosmia), some individuals also have disorders that lead to odor distortion, such as parosmia (i.e. distorted odor with a known source), or odor phantoms (i.e. odor sensation without an odor source). We surveyed a large population with at least one olfactory disorder (N = 2031) and found that odor distortions were common (46%), with respondents reporting either parosmia (19%), phantosmia (11%), or both (16%). In comparison to respondents with hyposmia or anosmia, respondents with parosmia were more likely to be fe

[Smell disorders at COVID-19 - the current level of knowledge].

Early reports of SARS-CoV-2 infections only rarely mentioned smell and taste disorders. Several studies, particularly from Europe and the USA, have now confirmed these symptoms as an early key feature of COVID-19. About 70 % of patients seem to experience a reduction of smell and taste in the course of the disease, with most of the studies published to date based on questionnaires and anamnestic data. Validated smell tests have so far only been used in a few studies. A distinction between taste and taste disorders, i. e. a distinction between retronasal aroma taste and the olfactory system fro

[Smell and taste in CoViD-19 patients: the forgotten sense.].

AIM: The aim of the retrospective study is to determine whether CoViD-19 positive patients with olfactory and gustatory dysfunction have the ability to recover chemoreceptorial loss, unlike other viral and inflammatory diseases in which the damage is partial and in some cases is permanent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study examined 75 patients admitted, from March to April 2020, at the Poliambulanza Foundation with CoViD-19. In 53 out of 75 patients, chest X-rays were positive for infiltration and/or pleural effusion. Two weeks after discharge, two rhinopharyngeal swabs were performed with neg

A review of smell and taste dysfunction in COVID-19 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple anecdotal reports suggest that smell and taste loss were early subclinical symptoms of COVID-19 patients. The objective of this review was to identify the incidence of smell and taste dysfunction in COVID-19, determine the onset of their symptoms and the risk factors of anosmia, hyposmia, ageusia or dysgeusia for COVID-19 infection. METHODS: We searched the PubMed and Google Scholar on 15th May 2020, with search terms including SARS-COV-2, coronavirus, COVID-19, hyposmia, anosmia, ageusia and dysgeusia. The articles included were cross sectional studies, observational s

The smell of "anxiety": Behavioral modulation by experimental anosmia in zebrafish.

Olfaction is strongly involved in the regulation of fish behavior, including reproductive, defensive, social and migration behaviors. In fish, anosmia (the lack of olfaction) can be induced experimentally, impairing their ability to respond to various olfactory stimuli. Here, we examine the effects of experimental lidocaine-induced anosmia on anxiety-like behavior and whole-body cortisol levels in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). We show that experimentally-induced anosmia reduces anxiolytic-like behavioral effects of fluoxetine and seems to interact with anxiogenic effect of stress also paralle

Neurotoxic exposure and impairment of the chemical senses of taste and smell.

The chemical senses of taste and smell determine the flavor of foods and beverages, guide appropriate food intake, and warn of such environmental hazards as spoiled or poisonous food, leaking natural gas, smoke, and airborne pollutants. This chapter addresses the influences of neurotoxic exposures on human chemoreception and provides basic information on the adverse influences of such exposures on rodent epithelia. The focus of the chapter is in olfaction, given dearth of empiric research on the effects of neurotoxic chemical exposures on the sense of taste, i.e., sweet, sour, bitter, salty, a

[Perception of taste and smell in normal and pathological aging: an update].

The physiological and pathological aging on sense organs is widely studied in the visual and hearing modalities. By contrast, taste and smell changes are widely overlooked. These symptoms are rarely evoked in the elderly and often neglected in clinical practice. Studies in this population are rare and show contradictory results. In this update, we describe the perception of taste and smell in aging. In a first part, we present studies about the aging of smell and taste senses. While taste is remarkably spared during aging, olfaction decreases dramatically since 5th decade of life, frequently r

Smelling the diagnosis: a review on the use of scent in diagnosing disease.

For centuries, our sense of smell has been used as a diagnostic tool in the practice of medicine, be it for recognising gas gangrene on the battle field or diabetic ketoacidosis in the emergency room. In recent decades, many scent detection studies have been performed with human, animal and electronic noses. The ability of humans to diagnose disease by smelling has only rarely been the subject of quantitative studies. Scent detection by animals, on the other hand, has been addressed in several diagnostic studies, which all suggest similar or even superior accuracy compared with standard diagno

Sense of smell disorder and health-related quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: To compare health-related quality of life and depression between individuals with an inability to smell (anosmia) and a comparison group of individuals with a normal sense of smell. METHODS: Ninety individuals from an anosmia organization (anosmia based on self-report) were compared to 89 individuals with a normal sense of smell. The SF-36 and Beck Depression Inventory-II-NL (BDI-II-NL) were administered, along with the Questionnaire for Olfactory Dysfunction (QOD) to assess the degree of problems in daily life related to the smell impairment. RESULTS: Compared to the comparison

A rose by any other name: would it smell as sweet?

We examined whether presenting an odor with a positive, neutral, or negative name would influence how people perceive it. In experiment 1, 40 participants rated 15 odors for their pleasantness, intensity, and arousal. In experiment 2, 30 participants passively smelled 10 odors while their skin conductance (SC), heart rate (HR), and sniffing were recorded. We found significant overall effects of odor names on perceived pleasantness, intensity, and arousal. Pleasantness showed the most robust effect of odor names: the same odors were perceived as more pleasant when presented with positive than w

Taste and smell disturbance with the alpha-adrenoceptor agonist midodrine.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of a disturbance of taste and smell associated with the alpha-adrenoceptor agonist midodrine. CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old white man with autonomic failure was started on midodrine 5 mg/day as treatment for orthostatic hypotension. After 3 months, the dose was increased to 12.5 mg/day, whereupon he noted a new onset of taste and smell disturbance. These symptoms made eating so unpleasant that the man greatly reduced his food intake, leading to significant weight loss. In addition, he experienced well-recognized adverse effects of midodrine, such as scalp pruritus, a

[Normal sense of smell in Kallmann syndrome. A case report].

BACKGROUND: Kallmann's syndrome (KS) was first mentioned in 1944 as an association of anosmia and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Causes are multiple genetic defects the most common of which is the x-linked KS appearing mostly in men. However, autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive forms have also been described. PATIENT: We present a case of KS with normosmia (male, 39 years of age). All symptoms of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism were present. RESULTS: Psychophysical olfactory testing revealed left-sided anosmia with right-sided normosmia which was confirmed by electrophysiological measur

A case of phobic anxiety related to the inability to smell cyanide.

This report describes a case of phobic anxiety relating to cyanide in a process operator who is unable to smell hydrogen cyanide. This case demonstrates that hazardous substances in the workplace can provoke this mental disorder in individuals who are unable to detect by special senses whether or not a specific hazard is present. The clinical management of such individuals is complicated since they must be able to perceive the feared object or substance in order to overcome their anxiety.

[Drug side effects on the nasal mucosa and sense of smell].

Several drugs may induce pathologic changes of the nasal mucosa, especially at a long-term treatment. The clinical appearance of an allergic or vasomotoric rhinopathy, a chronical hyperplastic or an atrophic rhinitis, hemorrhagic changes of the mucosa with the incidence of epistaxis or smelling disorders may be caused by several drugs. The ENT-specialist, therefore, should always take in consideration the various drugs, which the patient received but mostly have been prescribed by another doctor.
