Adherence to the Tobacco Control Act, 2007: presence of a workplace policy on tobacco use in bars and restaurants in Nairobi, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive knowledge about effective tobacco control interventions, the prevalence of tobacco use in many middle- and low-income countries continues to rise. In these countries, public appreciation of levels of protection provided by laws and regulations on tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke is limited. After ratification of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Kenya enacted the Tobacco Control Act, 2007, banning smoking in public places except in designated smoking areas. OBJECTIVE: To assess adherence to the Tobacco Control Act, 2007 by determining the pr

Smoking cessation approaches for persons with mental illness or addictive disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with psychiatric illnesses are about twice as likely as the general population to smoke tobacco. They also tend to smoke more heavily than other smokers. This critical review of the literature identified 24 empirical studies of outcomes of smoking cessation approaches used with samples of persons with mental disorders. METHODS: The authors conducted searches of large health care and other databases for the years 1991 through 2001, using the key terms smoking, smoking cessation, nicotine, health/hospital/smoke-free policy, and psychiatry/ mental/substance abuse disorders. Barriers and facilitators of maintained smoking abstinence following release from smoke-free prisons: A qualitative enquiry.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of smoking among people entering prisons is high. Despite increasing adoption of prison smoke-free policies, relapse to smoking after release from prison is nearly universal, and policy to effectively mitigate this is largely absent. Informed by a risk environment framework, we aimed to identify key barriers and facilitators to maintaining smoking abstinence among former smokers released from smoke-free prisons. METHOD: Twenty-one people released from smoke-free prisons in Queensland, Australia, were followed up from a larger survey of 114 former prisoners. Semi-str

Investigating Changes in Patients' Smoking Behavior, Tobacco Dependence, and Motivation to Stop Smoking Following a "Smoke-Free" Mental Health Inpatient Stay: Results From a Longitudinal Survey in England.

INTRODUCTION: In line with national guidance, mental health Trusts in England are implementing complete smoke-free policies. We investigated inpatients' changes in smoking behavior, tobacco dependence, vaping, and motivation to stop smoking between pre-admission and post-discharge. METHODS: We surveyed acute adult mental health inpatients from 14 wards in three mental health Trusts in England in 2019. Structured face-to-face and telephone interviews with patients who smoked on or during admission were conducted during the admission period and at one week and one month after discharge. Data on

Smoking cessation in smoke-free prisons: a grounded theory study.

Purpose Prisoners are vulnerable to tobacco addiction and have a smoking prevalence significantly higher than that of the general community. The context of this study was the implementation of a "smoke-free prisons" policy, which imposed forced smoking cessation onto the Queensland, Australian prison population. The study asked the question: "What are the psychosocial processes in which male prisoners engage during smoking cessation in a smoke-free environment?" Design/methodology/approach Qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 prisoners in South-east Queensland smoke-free correctional

How can we maximise the benefits of smoke-free prisons? Decision analytic model to predict potential impacts on public health.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking prevalence remains high in disadvantaged populations such as people in prison. Smokefree prisons protect health, however around 90% of people who smoke pre-prison, relapse to smoking shortly after release. If people released from smokefree prisons maintain smoking abstinence this could benefit their health and finances. Knock-on effects of smoking relapse on families could also be avoided. Offering an intervention to reduce relapse to smoking on release has the potential to benefit released people and their families. This study assesses potential costs and outcome

Changes and stability of hand nicotine levels in children of smokers: Associations with urinary biomarkers, reported child tobacco smoke exposure, and home smoking bans.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to thirdhand smoke (THS) residue takes place through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal transfer. Hand nicotine levels have been proposed to measure THS pollution in the environment of children, but little is known about its variability and stability over time and correlates of change. OBJECTIVES: The goal was to determine the stability of hand nicotine in comparison to urinary biomarkers and to explore factors that influence changes in hand nicotine. METHODS: Data were collected from 0 to 11-year-old children (Mean age = 5.9) who lived with ≥1 tobacco smokers (N = 129).

Predictors of Secondhand Smoke Exposure During Pregnancy in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras.

INTRODUCTION: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure poses risks to pregnant women and children. Though smoking among pregnant women in many low- and middle-income countries is low, exposure to SHS might be higher. We examined the prevalence and predictors of SHS among pregnant women from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. METHODS: Postpartum women 18+ years old who completed pregnancy in past 5 years were surveyed in health care and community settings. RESULTS: Data for 1,081 women indicated low tobacco use (1.0%-3.7%), frequent exposure to active smokers (29.0%-34.0%), often being

[Smoking policy in mental health care].

BACKGROUND: People with mental illnesses tend to smoke more often and more heavily than other members of the public and their addiction to tobacco also has harmful effects on their physical health. So far, however, limited priority was given to smoking cessation in mental health care settings. AIM: To provide insight into the formal and informal smoking policies of Dutch mental health care organisations and into the nature and extent of the smoking cessation support they offer, and, additionally, to look at the opportunities for improvement in clinical settings. METHOD: Document research on

Changes in ambulance calls after implementation of a smoke-free law and its extension to casinos.

BACKGROUND: Casinos are often exempted from legislation mandating smoke-free environments, potentially putting employees and patrons at risk for adverse events triggered by secondhand smoke exposure. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used an interrupted time series analysis of ambulance calls not originating and originating from casinos in Gilpin County, Colorado, a rural Colorado county with a large casino presence, from January 2000 through December 2012 to determine whether there was a change in ambulance calls originating from casinos when a state smoke-free law was extended to include them. My quitting stories: A qualitative study exploring Aboriginal women's experiences of smoking cessation and preventing relapse in the context of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Most women who give up smoking during pregnancy relapse to smoking postnatally. Evidence on strategies that are helpful in maintaining smoking cessation during and beyond pregnancy is limited. AIM: This paper aims to explore Aboriginal women's experiences of quitting smoking, relapsing, and preventing relapse, focusing on the strategies they applied for attaining and maintaining abstinence and the support they received. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted between October 2020 and June 2021, in urban New South Wales, Australia, with 12 Aboriginal women who either smoked

The Impact of the Danish National Smoking Ban From 2007 on the Incidence of Eight Smoking-related Diseases: A Nationwide Register-based Interrupted Time Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has documented the effect of comprehensive smoking bans on preventing various adverse health outcomes in the years post-ban. In 2007, Denmark implemented a national smoking ban that prohibited indoor smoking in workplaces and public settings, although only partial restrictions applied in specific premises such as small bars, one-person offices, and in psychiatric units. We tested the hypothesis that the implementation of the national smoking ban was associated with a decrease in incidence of smoking-related morbidity in the Danish population compared to the pre-ba

Are statewide restaurant and bar smoking bans associated with reduced cigarette smoking among those with mental illness?

BACKGROUND: Smoke-free air laws have effectively reduced cigarette consumption at the population level; however, the influence of these policies on smoking among those with mental illness is unclear. We examined whether associations between statewide restaurant/bar smoking bans and cigarette smoking varied by psychiatric diagnoses and gender. METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC, Wave 1: 2001-2002; Wave 2: 2004-2005; n = 7,317 smokers). All analyses were stratified by gender. We examined whether tobacco cessation was associ

To quit or not to quit? estimating the causal effects of Türkiye's indoor smoking ban on the intentions to quit smoking.

BACKGROUND: Smoking bans aim to reduce tobacco use, but their long-term effectiveness remains uncertain. This study investigates short- and long-term causal effects of Türkiye's indoor smoking ban policy on the intentions to quit smoking among adults. METHODS: Using three waves of data (2008, 2012, and 2016) from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), we analyse the changes in intentions to quit smoking before and after the implementation of indoor smoking ban policy in July 2009. The analysis includes data from 2008 as the pre-policy period, 2012 as the short post-policy period, and 2016 as

Impact of banning smoking in cars with children on exposure to second-hand smoke: a natural experiment in England and Scotland.

England banned smoking in cars carrying children in 2015 and Scotland in 2016. We used survey data from 3 years for both countries (NEngland=3483-6920, NScotland=232-319) to assess effects of the English ban using logistic regression within a difference-in-differences framework. Among children aged 13-15 years, self-reported levels of regular exposure to smoke in cars for Scotland were 3.4% in 2012, 2.2% in 2014 and 1.3% in 2016 and for England 6.3%, 5.9% and 1.6%. The ban in England was associated with a -4.1% (95% CI -4.9% to -3.3%) absolute reduction (72% relative reduction) in exposure to

Trends in the prevalence and factors associated with indoor smoking in 24 countries Party to the WHO FCTC: implications for equitable policy implementation.

INTRODUCTION: The health consequences of secondhand smoke (SHS) are a long-standing concern. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is an evidence-based treaty that aims to protect people from health and environmental harms of commercial tobacco use and exposure to SHS. This study quantified the prevalence of daily smoking inside the house (indoor smoking) and change over time and examined the determinants of indoor smoking in 24 WHO FCTC Parties. METHODS: We used data from the 2 most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) from 24 countries. Counties were selected if they

"Time-based" workplace smoking bans during working hours (including and excluding lunchtime) and combustible cigarette and heated tobacco product use: a cross-sectional analysis of the 2020 JASTIS study.

Although some private companies have implemented "time-based" workplace smoking bans covering all working hours including lunchtime, little is known about their impact on tobacco use. We examined associations between workplace smoking bans during working hours (including and excluding lunchtime) versus no ban and workers' combustible cigarette and heated tobacco product (HTP) use. We used data from the Japan "Society and New Tobacco" Internet Survey 2020 and in total 4,222 workers aged 20-74 were included in the analyses.
