The comparative evaluation of xanthan gel with chlorhexidine (Chlosite) in smokers and non-smokers: A clinical and microbiological assessment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prevention of the periodontal disease progression is the primary goal of periodontal therapy. When conventional therapy is found inadequate to attain periodontal health in chronic periodontitis, local antimicrobial agents have been used as an adjunct with scaling and root planning (SRP) which has reproduced encouraging results. Hence, this study was undertaken to evaluate the new sustained released local drug Chlosite clinically and microbiologically in smokers and non-smokers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients were grouped into experimental group A treated with S

Progression of periodontal disease in a maintenance population of smokers and non-smokers: a 3-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is accepted as an important factor that increases the risk for the initiation and progress of chronic periodontitis. However, the effect of cigarette smoking on the recurrence of disease in patients undergoing regular maintenance therapy is less understood. Therefore, we set out to assess disease progression longitudinally in smoking and non-smoking subjects with chronic periodontitis undergoing periodontal maintenance therapy every 3 to 4 months. METHODS: A total of 108 subjects undergoing regular maintenance therapy for chronic periodontitis were followed over

A comparative perception and impact of pictorial warnings on cigarette packaging among Malaysian smokers and non-smokers.

INTRODUCTION: In 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that pictorial warnings on tobacco products be used to educate consumers on the negative health impacts associated with tobacco use. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of pictorial warnings on cigarette packaging among smokers and non-smokers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted in Kuala Lumpur. Four components assessed the respondents' socio-demographics, smoking status, perceptions, and impact of pictorial warnings. Six standard cigarette pictorial warning imag

Accelerated epigenetic age, inflammation, and gene expression in lung: comparisons of smokers and vapers with non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking and aging are the main risk factors for pulmonary diseases, including cancer. Epigenetic aging may explain the relationship between smoking, electronic cigarette vaping, and pulmonary health. No study has examined smoking and vaping-related epigenetic aging in relation to lung biomarkers. METHODS: Lung epigenetic aging measured by DNA methylation (mAge) and its acceleration (mAA) was assessed in young (age 21-30) electronic cigarette vapers (EC, n = 14, including 3 never-smoking EC), smokers (SM, n = 16), and non-EC/non-SM (NS, n = 39). We investigated relationsh

Persons living with HIV who do not smoke cigarettes: A comparison of ex-smokers and never smokers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Approximately half of persons living with HIV (PLWH) in the US smoke cigarettes. Large surveys show that 16.9%-37.3% of PLWH are never smokers compared to 57.5% of US adults. Similar proportions of PLWH and general population adults describe themselves as ex-smokers (20.3% vs 21.9% respectively). Little research has been done to characterize PLWH non-smokers. In this study, we compared a group of well characterized PLWH ex-smokers (i.e., no cigarettes for at least 5 years) to PLWH never smokers with the aim of developing a clearer understanding of the characteristics of th

Comparative Evaluation of Clinical, Hematological and Systemic Inflammatory Markers in Smokers and Non-Smokers with Chronic Periodontitis.

CONTEXT: Systemic conditions, especially chronic infections, have a direct impact on the general health and well-being of an individual. Similarly, the long-standing inflammatory changes seen during periodontitis have been associated with the altered diabetic control, preterm, low birth weight infants, and cardiovascular disease. Being a low-grade infection, the signs may not be as severe as seen in other systemic conditions, but they definitely cannot be ignored. AIMS: The present study was designed to compare clinical, hematological, and systemic inflammatory markers in patients with chroni

Characteristics of COPD in never-smokers and ever-smokers in the general population: results from the CanCOLD study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited data on the risk factors and phenotypical characteristics associated with spirometrically confirmed COPD in never-smokers in the general population. AIMS: To compare the characteristics associated with COPD by gender and by severity of airway obstruction in never-smokers and in ever-smokers. METHOD: We analysed the data from 5176 adults aged 40 years and older who participated in the initial cross-sectional phase of the population-based, prospective, multisite Canadian Cohort of Obstructive Lung Disease study. Never-smokers were defined as those with a lifetime e

Positive Auto-Antibody Activity With Retina and Optic Nerve in Smokers and Non-Smokers: The Controversy Continues.

Auto-antibodies assist with the diagnosis of ocular paraneoplastic syndromes and autoimmune ocular conditions; however, the frequency of positive test results as a possible precursor to future disease is unknown. The frequency of positive antibodies in heavy smokers who may be at risk for autoimmune-related retinopathy and optic neuropathy was evaluated. Serum antibody activity was evaluated through the use of Western blot reactions from pig retina and optic nerve extract. Fifty-one patients were included: 35 patients were smokers (average: 40.9 pack-year history) and 26 patients had no past s

Expression of citrulline and homocitrulline residues in the lungs of non-smokers and smokers: implications for autoimmunity in rheumatoid arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking is a well-established risk factor for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and it has been proposed that smoking-induced citrullination renders autoantigens immunogenic. To investigate this mechanism, we examined human lung tissue from 40 subjects with defined smoking status, with or without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and control tissues from other organs for citrullinated proteins and the deiminating enzymes peptidylarginine deiminase type-2 (PAD2) and -4 (PAD4). METHODS: Lung tissue samples, dissected from lobectomy specimens from 10 never smokers, 10 smokers

The analysis of 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid in the plasma of smokers and non-smokers.

ATCA (2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid) is a promising marker to assess cyanide exposure because of several advantages of ATCA analysis over direct determination of cyanide and alternative cyanide biomarkers (i.e. stability in biological matrices, consistent recovery, and relatively small endogenous concentrations). Concentrations of ATCA in the plasma of smoking and non-smoking human volunteers were analyzed using gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry to establish the feasibility of using ATCA as a marker for cyanide exposure. The levels of ATCA in plasma of smoking volunteers, 17.2 ng/m

Sensitivity of three loci on the tongue and soft palate to four basic tastes in smokers and non-smokers.

The filter paper disk method was used to determine the map of the 4 tastes (sweet, salty, sour and bitter) on the tongue and soft palate in 69 healthy individuals. The equipment used for testing included filter paper disks 8 mm in diameter and taste solutions, which were sequentially diluted (in 13 stages from 80% sucrose, 12 stages from 20% NaCl, 12 stages from 8% tartaric acid and 14 stages from 4% quinine hydrochloride). The threshold at which each taste was recognized in three locations (center of the tongue tip, foliate papillae on the left side and center of the soft palate) was determin

Bronchial reactivity to inhaled histamine and annual rate of decline in FEV1 in male smokers and ex-smokers.

We examined the relations between bronchial reactivity, baseline FEV1, and annual decline of height corrected FEV1 (delta FEV1/ht3) over 7.5 years in 227 men (117 smokers, 71 ex-smokers, and 39 non-smokers). Men with a clinical diagnosis of asthma or receiving bronchodilator treatment were excluded. Bronchial reactivity was determined as the provocation concentration (PC20) of inhaled histamine sufficient to reduce FEV1 by 20%; subjects were divided into reactors (PC20 less than or equal to 16 mg/ml) and non-reactors (PC20 greater than 16 mg/ml). Thirty per cent of smokers, 24% of ex-smokers,

Cognitive function in aging cocaine smokers.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the functional status of older drug users, who may pose challenges to public health systems in coming years. Here, we assessed cognitive function in aging cocaine smokers compared to demographically matched controls. METHODS: A total of 22 non-treatment-seeking aging (50-60 years old) cocaine smokers (⩾twice/week; ⩾15 years of weekly use) and 19 controls completed a comprehensive cognitive battery. Controls with cannabis, tobacco, and alcohol use were included to better match the cocaine users. All cocaine users, and current cannabis- or alcohol-using control

Pot smokers puffing away lung health.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana is the second most commonly used inhalational agent after tobacco. It has been used for therapeutic benefits in cancer, epilepsy, inflammation and pain. Inhalation of marijuana causes reversible and irreversible lung injury. CASE: We present a 26-year-old female with cough, chest pain, epistaxis, hemoptysis, night sweats and breathlessness few hours after smoking marijuana. Physical exam was positive for tachycardia, tachypnea, and diminished coarse breath sounds. Further investigation revealed elevated white blood cell count, chest X-ray, computed tomography of the ches

Tobacco withdrawal among opioid-dependent smokers.

Prevalence of cigarette smoking among opioid-dependent individuals is 6-fold that of the general U.S. adult population and their quit rates are notoriously poor. One possible reason for the modest cessation outcomes in opioid-dependent smokers may be that they experience more severe tobacco withdrawal upon quitting. In this secondary analysis, we evaluated tobacco withdrawal in opioid-dependent (OD) smokers versus smokers without co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs). Participants were 47 methadone- or buprenorphine-maintained smokers and 25 non-SUD smokers who completed 1 of several 2-w

Are all placebo respondents non-smokers?

BACKGROUND: In smoking cessation trials, placebo response rates are reported to be rather low, and they are lowest when compared to the placebo response rates of treatment of other addictions. We hypothesized that high placebo response rates in trials outside of cessation treatment may predict low participation of smokers, and that non-smoking may be a behavioral marker of the placebo response. METHODS: We re-analyzed raw data from a randomized controlled drug trial in functional dyspepsia (n=315) for the number of smokers and non-smokers in both treatment arms (drug, placebo) and varied the

Cardiovascular autonomic reflexes in heavy smokers.

In order to study the effect of smoking on cardiovascular function, 25 healthy subjects with an average smoking history of 25 +/- 9 pack-years were examined using the Valsalva manoeuvre and the deep-breathing test. For each smoker there was a healthy, non-smoking control subject of matching age, sex and body mass index. During the tests, heart rate and blood pressure were recorded continuously. Compared with the controls, the smokers had (1) a smaller increase in heart rate during the strain phase of the Valsalva manoeuvre (P = 0.04); (2) weaker rebound increases in arterial pressure after the
