Effect of an intensive smoking cessation intervention on smoking cessation and disease activity in patients with RA: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the effect of a 6-week individual intensive smoking cessation intervention in patients with RA, relative to treatment-as-usual, on the co-primary outcomes (1) successful smoking cessation and (2) achievement of EULAR clinical response (improvement in DAS28-CRP of >0.6) 3 months post-intervention. Secondary outcomes were number of swollen joints, tender joints, CRP, patient and physician global assessment, pain, fatigue, flare, physical function and health related quality of life. METHODS: A multicentre, open label, two-arm, parallel-group, randomized trial included dail

[Effects of a smoking cessation education on smoking cessation, endothelial function, and serum carboxyhemoglobin in male patients with variant angina].

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a smoking cessation education on endothelial function and carboxyhemoglobin levels in smokers with variant angina. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 60 male smokers with variant angina admitted to one hospital: the control group (30) between September and December, 2009, and the experimental group (30) between February and May, 2010. Endothelial function, as defined by flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) of the brachial artery, and serum carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) were determined

Smoking cessation via the internet: a randomized clinical trial of an internet intervention as adjuvant treatment in a smoking cessation intervention.

Internet interventions for smoking cessation are ubiquitous. Yet, to date, there are few randomized clinical trials that gauge their efficacy. This study is a randomized clinical trial (N= 284, n= 140 in the treatment group, n= 144 in the control group) of an Internet smoking cessation intervention. Smokers were randomly assigned to receive either bupropion plus counseling alone, or bupropion and counseling in addition to 12 weeks of access to the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System for Smoking Cessation and Relapse Prevention (CHESS SCRP; a Web site which provided information on s

Two-year follow-up of a smoking cessation trial in patients with schizophrenia: increased rates of smoking cessation and reduction.

BACKGROUND: Long-term success rates of smoking cessation programs for patients with schizophrenia are unknown. This study, conducted between June 2001 and November 2002, evaluated the rate of smoking cessation and reduction in patients with schizophrenia (DSM-IV) 2 years after they had participated in a smoking cessation study in order to determine whether subjects who significantly reduced smoking during the original trial resumed their previous level of smoking at 2 years. METHOD: Two years following a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of bupropion sustained release, 150 mg/day, added t

Homeless women's perspectives on smoking and smoking cessation programs: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who are unsheltered or experiencing homelessness are more likely to smoke than those in the general population and have a higher prevalence of tobacco-related illnesses. Those who are unhoused make quit attempts at rates similar to the general population, however rates of successful quitting are much lower. Women bear a higher burden of smoking-related diseases and are less successful in their cessation efforts than men. Despite these increased risks and challenges, cessation programs specifically designed to meet the needs of women experiencing homelessness are extreme

Using ecological measures of smoking trigger exposure to predict smoking cessation milestones.

This study used ecological momentary assessment data from adult daily smokers attempting to quit smoking to assess relations between exposure to contextual risk factors and cessation failure, latency to a first smoking lapse, or progression from lapse to relapse (smoking 7 days in a row). Participants were adult, daily smokers enrolled in a randomized controlled clinical trial of bupropion SR and individual counseling who were followed to 1 year postquit. Participants reported exposure to high-risk contexts and behaviors, including being where cigarettes were available or smoking was permitted

High-Risk Smoking Behaviors and Barriers to Smoking Cessation Among Homeless Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco practices and the effects of tobacco use among the general American population are well described, minimal data exist regarding tobacco use and barriers to smoking cessation among homeless individuals. METHODS: Anonymous, voluntary surveys based on a previously implemented instrument were completed by 100 smoking individuals residing at a homeless shelter. These surveys assessed high-risk smoking behaviors and respondents' perceived barriers to long-term smoking cessation. RESULTS: Ninety percent of study participants reported engaging in at least one of the high

Does deterioration in mental health after smoking cessation predict relapse to smoking?

BACKGROUND: It is possible that some people who quit smoking experience improved mental health after cessation and therefore remain abstinent, whereas other people who quit may experience worse mental health after cessation and therefore be more likely to relapse to smoking. Thus, in this study we aimed to examine the association between an enduring change in mental health following the cessation period and future risk of relapse. METHODS: A secondary analysis of prospective data pooled from five placebo-controlled randomised trials for smoking reduction conducted in Europe, USA and Australia

Correlates of continued smoking versus cessation among survivors of smoking-related cancers.

OBJECTIVE: We examined correlates of continued smoking versus cessation among a sample of survivors of smoking-related cancers who were actively smoking at the time of cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Participants with a history of smoking and a smoking-related cancer diagnosis (lung, oral, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, bladder, stomach, cervix, kidney, pancreas, acute myeloid leukemia) within the past 4 years were identified in the electronic medical record. We recruited 613 individuals to complete a mail-based survey and received 139 completed surveys (22.7% response rate). We focused on 105 partic

Determinants of smoking status: cross-sectional data on smoking initiation and cessation.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is known to increase the risk of chronic disease. Improved understanding of factors that contribute to smoking initiation and cessation may help to underpin strategies that lead to smoking behavior change. METHODS: Cross-sectional data obtained from 11,967 men and women, aged 20-65 years, were used to study associations with smoking initiation and smoking cessation within the general population. Information on smoking habits, socio-demographic factors and psychosocial factors were collected through self-administered questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression an

Effectiveness of a text-messaging-based smoking cessation intervention ("Happy Quit") for smoking cessation in China: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: China has the highest global prevalence of cigarette smokers, accounting for more than 40% of the total cigarette consumption in the world. Considering the shortage of smoking cessation services in China, and the acceptability, feasibility, and efficacy of mobile-phone-based text messaging interventions for quitting smoking in other countries, we conducted a mobile-phone-based smoking cessation study in China. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in China across 30 cities and provinces from August 17, 2016, to May 27, 2017. Adult smokers aged 18 years a

Smoking Mechanics and Impact on Smoking Cessation: Two Cases of Smoking Lapse Status Post Lung Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Smoking behavior includes mechanisms taken on by persons to adjust for certain characteristic changes of cigarettes. However, as lung function declines due to lung-specific diseases, it is unclear how mechanical smoking behavior changes affect persons who smoke. We review two cases of patients who stopped smoking prior to and then subsequently resumed smoking after lung transplantation. METHODS: A retrospective review of two patients who were recipients of lung transplantation and sustained from cigarette usage prior to transplantation. RESULTS: Patient A was a 54-year-old woman

Smoking and Mental Illness: Prevalence, Patterns and Correlates of Smoking and Smoking Cessation among Psychiatric Patients.

This study aims to understand (a) the prevalence and correlates of smoking in a psychiatric population, (b) factors that encourage smoking cessation, and (c) awareness towards cessation programmes. This study captured data (n = 380) through a modified version of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). A descriptive analysis of the data was performed. The prevalence of smoking was 39.5% (n = 150) and 52.3% of the smokers were dependent on nicotine. More than half of the smokers had made at least one attempt to quit in the past 12 months and 56% reported no immediate plans to quit smoking. The a

Smoking Prevalence and Cessation in Skin Cancer Survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking is associated with worse skin cancer outcomes, yet smoking cessation after skin cancer diagnosis remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to examine and compare prevalences of smoking and cessation among skin cancer and internal cancer survivors using nationally representative data. METHODS: This survey-weighted analysis included 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from adults (age 20+) with self-reported cancer history (skin cancers only or internal cancers only). Skin cancer survivors were categorized as those who had non-melanoma skin

Interventions for smoking cessation in inpatient psychiatry settings.

RATIONALE: Tobacco smoking is a leading preventable cause of premature morbidity and mortality in people living with severe mental illness. Smoking rates are disproportionately high and abstinence rates low in people with severe mental illness, despite their reported interest in quitting being comparable to that of the general population. Inpatient psychiatry settings have been identified as opportune places to promote and support tobacco cessation amongst people with severe mental illness who smoke, particularly since many hospitals have implemented smoke-free policies. Evidence is needed to

In-Person versus Virtual CEASE Smoking Cessation Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation interventions are critical for underserved populations, particularly among low-income individuals who may benefit from tailored support. However, the effectiveness of different intervention formats remains unclear, particularly as virtual and hybrid models gain popularity. AIMS: This study compares the effectiveness of three smoking cessation intervention arms in a quasi-experimental design: Self-help group (Arm 1), In-person group (Arm 2), and Virtual/hybrid group (Arm 3). The primary outcome was the rate of successful quit across these different intervention mo
