Talcum induced pneumoconiosis following inhalation of adulterated marijuana, a case report.

BACKGROUND: Talcosis, a granulomatous inflammation of the lungs caused by inhalation of talcum dust, is a rare form of pneumoconiosis. Besides inhalative occupational exposure, intravenous abuse of adulterated drugs is a major cause for this condition. Minerals such as talcum (magnesium silicate) and sand (predominant silicon dioxide) are used to increase both volume and weight of illicit substances. In intravenous heroin-abuse, talcosis is a well-known complication. Here we describe a case of talcosis caused by inhalative abuse of adulterated marijuana. CLINICAL HISTORY: A 29-year old man pr

Respiratory effects in children from passive smoking of cigarettes and narghile: ISAAC Phase Three in Syria.

BACKGROUND: The association between environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and asthma symptoms is well documented, but a causal relationship is inconclusive. International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) Phase Three was the first to report a dose-response relationship between current wheezing and exposure to parental cigarette smoke. As exposure of children to water pipe (narghile) smoke is of concern in Syria, in the ISAAC Phase Three Tartous Centre we also examined the role of parental smoking of the narghile. METHODS: Parents of children aged 6-7 years completed core written

Pulmonary effects of waterpipe generated smoke in adult diabetic rats.

Waterpipe smoking (WPS) is associated with pulmonary inflammation and DNA damage. Tobacco use among diabetic patients adds substantial clinical and public health burden. This study aims to investigate the combined pulmonary effects of diabetes and smoking. To achieve this goal, type 1 diabetes (T1D) was induced in adult male rats by Streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) injection. Rats were then exposed either to fresh air or WPS for one hour daily over five weeks (five days/week). Lung remodeling was evaluated by histology. Changes affecting inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis and survival pathways

Beyond cigarettes: waterpipe tobacco use as a key driver of paediatric asthma in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a prevalent chronic disease among children worldwide. Exposure to parental environmental tobacco smoke is a known risk factor for paediatric asthma, but the specific impact of different tobacco products, such as waterpipe, is not well established. In Jordan, where waterpipe smoking is culturally accepted and widespread, understanding its association with childhood asthma is critical. This study aimed to assess the association between parental tobacco use-particularly waterpipe smoking-and the presence of physician-diagnosed paediatric asthma in Jordan. METHODS: A hospita

Factors Associated With Quitting Smoking in Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with quitting smoking in Indonesia. METHODS: Data on 11 115 individuals from the fifth wave of the Indonesia Family Life Survey were analyzed. Quitting smoking was the main outcome, defined as smoking status based on the answer to the question "do you still habitually (smoke cigarettes/smoke a pipe/use chewing tobacco) or have you totally quit?" Logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with successful attempts to quit smoking. RESULTS: The prevalence of quitting smoking was 12.3%. The odds of success

Prevalence and patterns of different types of non-cigarette tobacco use in England: a population study.

INTRODUCTION: Non-cigarette tobacco smoking increased in England between 2013 and 2023, but little is known about the prevalence of use of specific types of non-cigarette tobacco, including smokeless products, or whether the increasing trend has continued. This study examined recent trends in exclusive non-cigarette tobacco smoking and estimated the prevalence of different smoked and smokeless product use by sociodemographic characteristics, vaping status, and cigarette smoking status. METHODS: Data came from the Smoking Toolkit Study, a nationally representative monthly cross-sectional surve

Metabolic differences between men and women who are long-term users of the water pipe: The Irbid WiHi project.

Smoking tobacco and metabolic disorders are global epidemics associated with cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, and metabolic diseases. Cigarette smoking seems to affect metabolic disorders. However, the effect of water pipe (Wp), also called hookah, smoking duration on obesity and lipid profile is still a sparse. The present study examined the relationship of smoking Wp with body weight (Bw), body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), total cholesterol/HDLc, LDLc/HDLc, and triglycerides. Obesity, lipid p

The influence of smoking on complications after primary amputations of the lower extremity.

A total of 165 primary above-the-knee (AK) and below-the-knee (BK) amputations in 137 patients were reviewed retrospectively. Of the 77 patients who smoked, 44 smoked cigarettes, 30 cheroots, and three a pipe. There were 88 nonsmokers. At the time of surgery, the smokers were on average 6.4 years younger than the nonsmokers. The review revealed no discrepancy between smokers and nonsmokers with regard to amputation level, the BK to AK ratio being 2:1. In cigarette smokers the risk of infection and reamputation was 2:5 times higher than in cheroot smokers or nonsmokers. The poor results obtaine

Impact of tobacco use on periodontal status.

This article reviews the effects of smoked and smokeless tobacco on periodontal status, including the impact of smoking on periodontal therapy and potential mechanisms for the adverse effects of tobacco on the periodontium. Approximately half of periodontitis cases have been attributed to either current or former smoking. Both cigar and cigarette smokers have significantly greater loss of bone height than nonsmokers, and there is a trend for pipe smokers to have more bone loss than nonsmokers. Unlike smokers, who experience widespread periodontal destruction, the most prevalent effects of smok

Use of other combustible tobacco products among priority populations of smokers: Implications for U.S. tobacco regulatory policy.

Certain sub-populations (e.g., those living in poverty, racial/ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, and people with mental health conditions) experience profound tobacco-related health disparities. Ongoing surveillance of use of various combustible tobacco products by priority populations of cigarette smokers is needed, particularly in the changing U.S. tobacco regulatory landscape. In 2018 the FDA announced their consideration of a tobacco product standard that would limit the level of nicotine in combustible cigarettes, and such regulations should consider potential effects on tobacco-relat

Lead in duplicate diet samples from an academic community.

Lead is a naturally occurring element that with the advent of the industrial era became a serious environmental and public health issue. Leaded gasoline, lead based paints, use of lead in plumbing and water pipes, ceramics with lead-containing glazes and tobacco smoke are potential sources of lead exposure for humans. Despite these multiple sources, food is still considered the most important one for the general non-smoking population. Hence, in the present study, the dietary intake of lead was determined in duplicate diet samples provided by 30 participants working or studying at University o
