The role of fibroblast growth factor 2 in patients with uterine smooth muscle tumors: an immunohistochemical study.

OBJECTIVE: Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) is considered to be a potent stimulator of angiogenesis and seems therefore to play an important role in the growth of tumors. We compared the immunohistochemical profile of FGF-2 in patients with uterine leiomyomas, smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) and leiomyosarcoma (LMS). Furthermore, we tried to clarify the prognostic role of FGF-2 in uterine leiomyosarcoma. STUDY DESIGN: FGF-2 expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry from paraffin-embedded tissue in 26 patients with leiomyoma, in 24 cases with STUMP and

Molecular analyses of 6 different types of uterine smooth muscle tumors: Emphasis in atypical leiomyoma.

BACKGROUND: Uterine smooth muscle tumors (USMTs) constitute a group of histologic, genetic, and clinical heterogeneous tumors that include at least 6 major histologically defined tumor types: leiomyoma (ULM), mitotically active leiomyoma (MALM), cellular leiomyoma (CLM), atypical leiomyoma (ALM), uncertain malignant potential (STUMP), and leiomyosarcoma (LMS). Apart from ULM and LMS, the nature of these variants is not well defined. METHODS: A total of 167 cases of different USMT variants were collected, reviewed, and diagnostically confirmed based on the World Health Organization and Stanfor

Low-grade smooth muscle tumors of the primary and the secondary mullerian system: a proposed concept of multicentricity.

Some patients with bland smooth muscle tumors in the uterus have synchronous or asynchronous smooth muscle tumors in the peritoneum and/or the retroperitoneum. It is usually assumed that the uterine tumor is the primary lesion, and the extrauterine neoplasm represents its metastasis. Thus, they are designated as low-grade leiomyosarcomas because they lack the diagnostic features of a conventional spindle cell leiomyosarcoma. Nineteen such cases were retrieved from the files of the Department of Pathology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, covering a period of 18 yr. Instit

[Co-adaptation of enzymatic systems of cells and blood supply in smooth muscle tumors of the corpus uteri].

We investigated co-adaptation of enzymatic systems of cells using data on activity of NAD(Ph)-dependent enzymes and AgNOR proteins of vascular endothelium vis-a-vis angiogenesis in benign and malignant smooth muscle tumors of the corpus uteri. Overall metabolic activity (NAD-H2 diaphorase) was found to directly correlate with angiogenesis and endothelial vessel proliferation (r = 0.76 and 0.84, respectively). SDH-regulated oxidation in the main metabolic succession of a tricarbonic acid cycle depended on blood supply and endothelial vessel proliferation (r = 0.84 and 0.92, respectively; p = 0.

Transcriptional analysis of steroid hormone receptors in smooth muscle uterine leiomyoma tumors of postmenopausal patients.

Smooth muscle tumors are histologically separated into benign leiomyomas and malignant leiomyosarcomas. Uterine leiomyomas represent benign clonal tumors often arising within the smooth muscle tissue of the human uterus. Uterine leiomyomas develop after the start of the menstrual cycle, become symptomatic during middle age, and in most postmenopausal patients tumor regression occurs. Rarely, leiomyomas progress to leiomyosarcomas, where many sarcomas have markedly reduced or no steroid hormone receptors, thus, evolve to a hormone non-responsive state. Premenopausal leiomyomas are known to expr

Management of gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumors: seven years experience of a teaching hospital in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) smooth muscle tumors are a group of intramural GI tumors formerly known as leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma. This retrospective study was made to review our experience in surgical management of GI smooth muscle tumors. METHODS: The clinical records for patients with GI smooth muscle tumors during 1993-1999 were reviewed. RESULTS: Ten tumors were located in stomach. Abdominal pain was the main presenting symptom followed by GI bleeding. The preoperative diagnosis was made by enhanced computerized tomography (CT) on eleven patients out of thirteen, while upper GI

Leiomyoma of the uterus with multiple extrauterine smooth muscle tumors: a case report suggesting multifocal origin.

A 17-year-old woman underwent hysterectomy for removal of a "mitotically active" (six to seven mitoses per 10 high-power fields) yet otherwise benign-appearing cellular smooth muscle tumor. Eleven years later, she developed multiple histologically benign smooth muscle tumors in the posterior mediastinum, deep soft tissues of the neck, paravertebral region, incisional scar, and mesentery. The distribution and histologic appearance of the tumors, as well as the protracted clinical course, suggest multifocal origin rather than widespread metastases from a low-grade uterine leiomyosarcoma. This ca

Smooth muscle tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. A study of 56 cases followed for a minimum of 10 years.

Cases of gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumor seen at M. D. Anderson Hospital and followed for a minimum of 10 years are presented. The tumors were classified as high-grade leiomyosarcoma (41 cases), low-grade leiomyosarcoma (13 cases), and leiomyoma (2 cases). All of the leiomyosarcomas originated in the stomach (21 cases), small intestine (29 cases), or rectum (4 cases) and appeared to have arisen from the muscularis propria. Leiomyosarcomas were considered high-grade when the maximal mitotic rate in ten consecutive high-power fields was ten or more and low-grade when this rate was lower (ac

Multifocal Hepatic Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Smooth Muscle Tumor Mimicking Posttransplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder in a Renal Allograft Recipient.

Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMT) are rare neoplasms seen in immunocompromised patients and may mimic posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). We report a 19-year-old renal transplant recipient presenting with abdominal symptoms and suspected PTLD. 18 F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated multiple hypermetabolic liver lesions. Histopathology confirmed EBV-SMT. Follow-up PET/CT after immunosuppression with mTOR inhibition demonstrated partial metabolic response. This case highlights the role of 18 F-FDG PET/CT in detecting multifocal disease, guiding biopsy, differenti

Fertility preservation in the setting of a new uterine smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMPs) of the uterus present unique challenges to patients and their care teams. Although the diagnosis primarily affects perimenopausal women, in rare cases, it can be seen in younger women desiring fertility preservation. Systematic reviews in available literature support fertility-preserving management options, such as myomectomy, to be equally efficacious in preventing disease progression into sarcoma development compared to hysterectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: Through careful multidisciplinary collaboration among experts wit

Hemoperitoneum due to spontaneous bleeding from a smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMPs) are uncommon tumors representing an extremely rare cause of hemoperitoneum. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 48-year-old Caucasian, premenopausal woman that presented in the emergency department with acute abdominal pain. There was no remarkable past medical and surgical history except from a known uterine leiomyoma. The ultrasound and the computed tomography imaging showed an intraperitoneal fluid collection and a heterogenous uterine mass. The patient underwent emergent exploratory laparotomy

An interpretable model based on weakly supervised learning for uterine smooth muscle tumor diagnosis: A multi-center study.

Uterine smooth muscle tumors (USMTs) are the most common tumors of the female reproductive system, but remain diagnostically challenging due to morphological overlap among leiomyosarcoma (LMS), various leiomyoma (LM) subtypes, and smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP). This study aimed to develop a weakly supervised artificial intelligence (AI) model for classifying USMTs as benign or malignant using only slide-level labels. A multi-center dataset comprising 94 LMS cases (408 whole-slide images, WSIs) and 634 benign cases (1389 WSIs) was used for model training and inte

Epstein-Barr virus associated hepatic smooth muscle tumor in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated smooth muscle tumors (SMTs) usually present under the condition of immunosuppression, including congenital immunodeficiency syndrome-SMT, post-transplantation-SMT and HIV-SMT. HIV-SMTs are most likely to invade the central nervous system, followed by the liver, lungs, and other locations. Many laboratory techniques, including serological techniques, polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry (IHC), are employed to determine the aetiologies of these tumours. With respect to therapy, surgical resection is the main treatment. In patients w

Morcellator's Port-site Metastasis of a Uterine Smooth Muscle Tumor of Uncertain Malignant Potential After Minimally Invasive Myomectomy.

Since the safety warning from the US Food and Drug Administration on the use of power morcellators, minimally invasive procedures involving the removal of uterine myomas and large uteri are under scrutiny. Growing evidence suggests that morcellation of undiagnosed uterine malignancies is associated with worse survival outcomes of patients affected by uterine sarcoma. However, to date, only limited data regarding morcellation of low-grade uterine neoplasms are available. In the present article, we reported a case of a (morcellator) port-site implantation of a smooth muscle tumor that occurred 6

Do GISTs Occur in Rats and Mice? Immunohistochemical Characterization of Gastrointestinal Tumors Diagnosed as Smooth Muscle Tumors in The National Toxicology Program.

The majority of the tumors in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of rats and mice, with spindle cell morphology, are diagnosed as smooth muscle tumors (SMTs). Similarly, several decades ago human GI tumors with spindle cell morphology were also diagnosed as SMTs. However, later investigations identified most of these tumors in humans as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). The GISTs are considered to arise from the interstitial cells of Cajal located throughout the GI tract. Positive immunohistochemical staining with CKIT antibody is a well-accepted diagnostic marker for GISTs in humans. Sinc
