Effects of indulgent food snacking, with and without exercise training, on body weight, fat mass, and cardiometabolic risk markers in overweight and obese men.

We hypothesized that exercise training would prevent gains in body weight and body fat, and worsening of cardiometabolic risk markers, during a 4-week period of indulgent food snacking in overweight/obese men. Twenty-eight physically inactive men (ages 19-47 yr) with body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2 consumed 48 donuts (2/day, 6 days/week; ~14,500 kcal total) for 4 weeks while maintaining habitual diet. Men were randomly assigned to control (n = 9), moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT; n = 9), or high-intensity interval training (HIIT; n = 10). Exercise training occurred 4 days/week, ~2

Occupational Rhinoconjunctivitis due to Maize in a Snack Processor: A Cross-Reactivity Study Between Lipid Transfer Proteins From Different Cereals and Peach.

We report the case of a snack processor who developed occupational rhinoconjunctivitis due to maize brand exposure during the extrusion process, and who experienced abdominal pain upon drinking beer. The allergens implicated and the cross-reactivity between non-specific lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) from different cereals and peach were investigated. Skin prick tests and specific IgE to cereal flours, pulmonary functions tests and specific conjunctival and inhalation challenges to maize extract were performed. In vitro studies included IgE immunoblotting and ELISA inhibition assays. Skin pric

Effects of 75 min of weekly exercise snacks on body composition, cardiometabolic health, cardiorespiratory fitness, and lower-body explosive power in overweight and obese female university students.

BACKGROUND: Overweight and obesity have become increasingly prevalent among female university students, whereas conventional exercise interventions are often limited by poor adherence and time constraints. Exercise snacks (ES) may offer a flexible and time-efficient alternative; however, their effectiveness in this population remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We compared the effects of 8 weeks of ES (75 min/week) and HIIT on body composition, cardiometabolic health, cardiorespiratory fitness, and lower-body explosive power in overweight and obese females in a real-world setting. METHODS: Thirty ov

Consumption of tree nuts as snacks stimulates changes in plasma fatty acid profiles and adipose tissue gene expression in young adults at risk for metabolic syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has been increasing in young adults, concomitant with the occurrence of increased abdominal adiposity. We previously reported that consuming tree nuts, as replacement for typical high-carbohydrate snacks, reduces visceral fat and waist circumference in young adults who have one or more metabolic syndrome risk factors. We aimed to investigate the effects of tree nuts snack consumption on plasma and adipose tissue fatty acid profiles along with changes in the expression of adipose tissue genes involved in thermogenesis, glycemia, adipocyt

Bedtime Snack Composition and Overnight Glycemic Profiles in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Using Multiple Daily Injections: A Randomized Crossover Study.

Background/Objectives: Bedtime snacks are frequently used in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to reduce nocturnal hypoglycemia risk; however, the optimal macronutrient composition remains uncertain, particularly in those treated with multiple daily injections (MDI). This randomized crossover study evaluated whether standardized whole-food bedtime snacks with different macronutrient profiles yield distinct overnight continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) patterns. Methods: Twelve children and adolescents with T1D using glargine/lispro-based MDI completed four bedtime snack protocols: carbohydrate-

Late-Evening Snack with Branched-Chain Amino Acid-Enriched Nutrients Does Not Always Inhibit Overt Diabetes in Patients with Cirrhosis: A Pilot Study.

Cirrhosis patients often have abnormal glucose metabolism. We investigated the effects of a late-evening snack (LES) with branched-chain amino acid-enriched nutrients (BCAA-EN) on glucose metabolism in cirrhosis patients. LES with BCAA-EN was administered for 1 week in 13 patients with cirrhosis and hypoalbuminemia. Blood glucose (BG) levels were measured every 15 min. The patients were divided into two groups based on BG levels: group 1 (G1, n = 11): nocturnal BG levels <200 mg/dL and group 2 (G2, n = 2): nocturnal BG levels ≥200 mg/dL. G1 had nocturnal BG levels <200 mg/dL, whereas G2 had no

High-Frequency Feeding With Late-Night Snacking Accelerates Type 2 Diabetes and Alters Diurnal Metabolic Gene Expression in Male KKAy Mice.

Meal frequency as an independent determinant of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk under strictly isocaloric conditions remains undefined. We investigated whether increasing meal frequency from three to six isocaloric meals per day alters T2DM incidence and diurnal metabolic and gene expression patterns in male KKAy mice. High-frequency feeding with late-night snacking significantly increased T2DM incidence (relative risk = 2.1), disrupted diurnal glucose and insulin rhythms, increased hepatic glycogen accumulation, and elevated hepatic metabolic gene expression, with altered diurnal coexpre

Feasibility and acceptability of a remotely delivered, home-based "exercise snacking" to improve physical function in community-dwelling older adults: a 28-day pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Age-related declines in muscle strength and physical function increase the risk of frailty, falls, and loss of independence in older adults. Traditional structured exercise programs often have low participation because of time constraints, limited access to facilities, and health-related barriers. "Exercise snacking" defined as brief bouts of resistance exercise accumulated across the day, may offer a more flexible and feasible option. METHODS: In this 28-day pilot randomized controlled trial, 36 community-dwelling older adults aged 65-80 years were randomly assigned to a home-bas

Exploring dietary patterns during school hours in Swedish adolescent student population, focusing on out-of-school eating and snacking: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Establishing healthy dietary habits during childhood and adolescence is essential, as these patterns often persist into adulthood and influence long-term health. In Sweden, school lunches play an important role in overall nutritional intake. However, among adolescents, school lunch participation may decrease, while purchasing food from nearby retailers becomes increasingly common. This study aims to investigate dietary patterns among adolescents aged 13-19 years in Stockholm, Sweden, during school hours, focusing on school lunch participation and snacking inside and around school.

Combining uncertainty-aware predictive modeling and a bedtime Smart Snack intervention to prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia in people with type 1 diabetes on multiple daily injections.

OBJECTIVE: Nocturnal hypoglycemia is a known challenge for people with type 1 diabetes, especially for physically active individuals or those on multiple daily injections. We developed an evidential neural network (ENN) to predict at bedtime the probability and timing of nocturnal hypoglycemia (0-4 vs 4-8 h after bedtime) based on several glucose metrics and physical activity patterns. We utilized these predictions in silico to prescribe bedtime carbohydrates with a Smart Snack intervention specific to the predicted minimum nocturnal glucose and timing of nocturnal hypoglycemia. Chronologically scheduled snacking with high-protein products within the habitual diet in type-2 diabetes patients leads to a fat mass loss: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is the most relevant overnutrition disease worldwide and is associated to different metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes. Low glycemic load foods and diets and moderately high protein intake have been shown to reduce body weight and fat mass, exerting also beneficial effects on LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride concentrations, postprandial glucose curve and HDL-cholesterol levels. The present study aimed at studying the potential functionality of a series of low glycemic index products with moderately high protein content, as possible coadjuvants i

Child and Adult Care Food Program: Family Childcare Home Providers' Perceptions of Impacts of Increased Meal and Snack Reimbursement Rates during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Introduction: The U.S. Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) provides tiered reimbursements for healthy foods for children at participating family childcare homes (FCCH). Higher tier 1 reimbursements are for providers who operate in low-income communities or who are themselves living on a low income. All FCCHs received a higher rate to address food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A survey was administered in the spring of 2023 to a randomly selected sample of licensed California FCCHs to assess the perceived impacts of the increased reimbursement on CACFP participation an

Impact of mineral ions on the release of starch and gel forming capacity of potato flakes in relation to water dynamics and oil uptake during the production of snacks made thereof.

Potato flakes (PFs) are made by boiling, mashing and subsequent drying of steam peeled potatoes. Their cold-water swelling starch readily develops viscosity upon hydration. That potato starch amylopectin (AP) contains esterified phosphate groups results in rapid swelling and high viscosity of PF suspensions. This study is the first report on the impact of sodium, calcium and aluminum chloride on (i) the physicochemical properties of PFs and (ii) the water dynamics in relation to oil uptake in the production of deep-fried crisps made thereof. Adding 125 μmol cation/g PF dry matter (dm) of these

Conditioned place preferences (CPPs) to high-caloric "snack foods" in rat strains genetically prone vs. resistant to diet-induced obesity: resistance to naltrexone blockade.

A previous study in our laboratory using Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats showed that conditioned place preferences (CPPs) can be learned to two different high-caloric "snack foods"--one high in sugar (Froot Loops cereal: FL) vs. one high in fat (Cheetos: C), and that both preferences were mediated by endogenous opioids. Using the same CPP apparatus and procedures, two genetic sub-strains of SD rats, one selectively bred for diet-induced obesity (DIO) vs. another bred for diet resistance to obesity (DR), were used in this investigation. The experiment determined if (a) CPPs can be created in both
