[Snake bite poisoning and compartment syndrome. A report of two cases].

Snakebite poisonings are frequent In Morocco, because of the delay in treatment, they can be very serious even lethal. Treatment has two components: firstly correction of the systemic hemodynamic, respiratory and haematological disturbances and secondly administration of specific antivenom. Envenomation of a limb can lead to cutaneous necrosis, compartment syndrome and even necrotising fascitis. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is needed to prevent these complications. We report two cases of compartment syndrome of which one was combined with systemic manifestations and the other caused re

[The epidemiology of accidental bites by venomous snakes in the state of Ceará, Brazil].

From 1992 to 1995, 688 accidents by venomous snakes (mean of 192 cases/year) have been notified to the Health Ministry of the State of Ceará, with an incidence between 0.9 and 5.8/100.000 inhabitants. Among 473 cases, 88.3% were of the genus. Bothrops, 10.7% Crotalus, 0.8% Micrurus and 0.2% Lachesis. The highest incidence occurred from April to September. Male (75.6%) predominated with ages from 10 to 49 years old (72.3%). The more frequently bitten anatomical region were the lower limbs (81.9%) and upper limbs (14.7%). The attendance at health unit which notified the accident took place withi

Snake bites in Zimbabwe: a clinical study with emphasis on the need for antivenom.

A retrospective analysis of 83 consecutive patients (42 males and 41 females) treated for snake bites at Mpilo Central Hospital between January 1990 and June 1992 is presented. In Zimbabwe poisonous snakes belong to four families; Colubrids (Boomslang), Vipers (Puff Adder), Elapids (Mambas and Cobras) and Atractaspids (Bibron Stilleto snake). The Puff Adder is responsible for three quarters of the bites. Forty eight pc (40/83) of the patients were below 20 years of age (range 1 year 10 months to 72 years). Most bites occurred at night (61 pc) in the rainy season (November to April). The majori

An epidemiological study of snake bite envenomation in Papua New Guinea.

We report a study of 347 patients with snake bite envenomation in Papua New Guinea. The male: female ratio of the victims was 1.6:1 and their mean age was 24.5 years; 26% were children less than 15 years old. In all cases in which the bite site was known (334) the snake had bitten the extremities of the victim, with 71.3% of these bites being on the ankle or below. The patients came from three regions: urban Papua, rural Papua and (mostly rural) New Guinea. Snake bites occurred more frequently during the daytime in all regions, but this pattern was less obvious in New Guinea (P = 0.004), refle

Prediction, prevention, and mechanism of early (anaphylactic) antivenom reactions in victims of snake bites.

Victims of snake bites are often subjected to cutaneous or conjunctival hypersensitivity testing before being given antivenom. None of 12 early (anaphylactic) reactions was predicted by these tests in 25 Nigerian and Thai patients. The incidence and severity of early reactions was the same whether antivenom was given by intravenous injection over 10 minutes or diluted and given as an intravenous infusion over 30 minutes. Although antivenom activated complement in vitro, there was no evidence of complement activation or formation of immune complexes in patients bitten by snakes who were treated

[Notes on bites of the snake Alsophis cantherigerus Bibron (Reptilia-Serpentes colubridae) in Cuba].

The two single cases of persons who were bitten by the abundant and current species of Cuban snake which is commonly known as "jubo" (Alsophis cantherigerus) and the bothersome lesions as a result of the enzymatic content of its saliva are reported. Likewise there are in the Antilles region other species of that genus which also cause such lesions since they also have the same characteristic. Bibliography on these ophidia and their main toxicology are pointed out.

[Australian method of first aid for European snake bites. Spreading its use in Italy].

Antiquated first-aid procedures, such as the incision and sucking of the wound and the application of a tourniquet, are still used in Italy consequent to the bite of vipers. The A. hope that such procedures will be finally abandoned, since they are ineffective, impractical, painful and can furthermore produce invalidating or disfiguring permanent outcomes. In this report they extensively describe Australian first-aid measures consequent to snakebites, constituted by a compressive bandage and by immobilization of the bitten limb by splinting. They hope therefore that the divulgation of this pro

Risks to infants on Guam from bites of the brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis).

The brown tree snake, Boiga irregularis, is abundant on Guam and commonly invades human habitations. Data on emergency room visits on Guam document a high frequency of snakebites on Guam. Over 50% of the emergency room visits for snakebite involved children less than 4 years old. Records exist of 4 infants, 1, 2, 5, and 10 months old, who displayed significant symptoms after being bitten, while sleeping, by snakes. Two infants developed respiratory problems within a few hours and required medical treatment for asphyxiation. Lethargy, diminished sensory perceptions, drooping eyelids, swelling,

Randomized controlled trial on the effective dose of anti-snake venom in cases of snake bite with systemic envenomation.

Snake bite is the common cause of morbidity and mortality in India. Snake antivenom, although very effective, is expensive, scarce, and associated with side effects. The conventional dose may not be required in all cases and a smaller dose may be as effective. A randomized double blind controlled trial was conducted to compare the effect of lower versus the conventional (high) dose. Patients presenting within 24 hours of snake bite with hematological or neurological evidence of systemic envenomation were included in the study. Patients were randomized either to receive high dose (2 vials over

Bites by the colubrid snake Philodryas patagoniensis: a clinical and epidemiological study of 297 cases.

We retrospectively analyzed 297 proven cases of Philodryas patagoniensis bites admitted to Hospital Vital Brazil (HVB), Butantan Institute, São Paulo, Brazil, between 1959 and 2008. Only cases in which the causative animal was brought and identified were included. Part of the snakes brought by the patients was still preserved in the collection maintained by the Laboratory of Herpetology. Of the 297 cases, in 199 it was possible to describe the gender of the snake, and seventy three (61.3%) of them were female. The length of snakes (snout-vent length) ranged from 160 to 1080 mm. In 117 snakes t

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Asian Coral Snake Bites in Thailand: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Asian coral snakes are distributed throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, but clinical data on their envenomation remain limited. Using a 10-year retrospective dataset from the Ramathibodi Poison Center, we investigated the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of Asian coral snake envenomation in Thailand. Patient demographics, clinical and laboratory data, treatments, and outcomes were analyzed descriptively. Fifty-two patients were included. Sinomicrurus macclellandi was the most frequently reported species. Most bites occurred during the rainy season and

Compartment syndrome of upper limb following snake bite, a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Snakebites, recognized as a neglected tropical disease by the WHO, cause significant morbidity and mortality globally. Although antivenom is the primary treatment, managing complications like compartment syndrome (CS) and soft tissue necrosis remains challenging. This case report describes a 39-year-old woman who developed CS following a green pit viper bite and subsequent antivenom administration, necessitating a fasciotomy. CASE: The patient sustained a bite to her right middle finger, receiving 10 vials of polyvalent anti-snake venom. The next day, she developed symptoms sugg

Snake bite-induced renal medullary angitiis in a child: A case report.

Snake bite envenomation is common in tropical countries during the summer. Snake bite-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) has varied histopathological manifestations such as acute cortical necrosis, acute tubular necrosis (ATN), and acute interstitial nephritis. However, snake bite-induced renal medullary angiitis has rarely been reported. We describe a nine-year-old child with AKI following viperine snake bite and renal biopsy revealed pigment cast nephropathy, ATN and medullary angiitis.

Calcific myonecrosis following snake bite: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Calcific myonecrosis is a rare condition in which muscle in a limb compartment undergoes necrosis and becomes peripherally calcified with central liquefaction. The patient usually presents with a slowly progressive enlarged mass that sometimes can be misdiagnosed as soft tissue sarcoma. Most of the reported cases showed that the disease occurs often after trauma or compartment syndrome. However, the case of calcific myonecrosis following snake bite is rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old Thai woman presented with a gradually progressive enlarged mass over a period o

A bite by the Twin-Barred Tree Snake, Chrysopelea pelias (Linnaeus, 1758).

INTRODUCTION: The Twin-Barred Tree Snake, Chrysopelea pelias, is a colubrine that, like other members of the genus Chrysopelea, is able to glide in the arboreal strata. Little is known about the effects of its bite. This report is the first clinically documented bite by this relatively uncommon rear-fanged species. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 19-year-old female who arrived at the Emergency Department (ED) of an urban teaching hospital 6 h after being bitten by a snake that was later provisionally identified as a C. pelias. Noted on presentation were bite marks on the right middle toe with
