In the personality development controlled by complicated and numerous influences we searched for those characteristics which can be made responsible for infantile atrophy. In comparison with children of average development and of the same age we found that in addition to a somatic retardation the intellectual efficiency is impaired in 60 percent of the cases; we were also able to find disorders of the emotional circle. All of these result in the disharmony of personality. In the capacities for adaptation the narrow, familial, environmental influences appear to be of importance in that in contr

OBJECTIVES: Head and neck cancer (HNC) diagnosis through the 2-week wait, urgent suspicion of cancer (USOC) pathway has failed to increase early cancer detection rates in the UK. A head and neck cancer risk calculator (HaNC-RC) has previously been designed to aid referral of high-risk patients to USOC clinics (predictive power: 77%). Our aim was to refine the HaNC-RC to increase its prediction potential.
DESIGN: Following sample size calculation, prospective data collection and statistical analysis of referral criteria and outcomes.
SETTING: Large tertiary care cancer centre in Scotland.

This study investigated adolescent same-sex friendship conflict trajectories and their associations with social-emotional adjustment in a sample of Chinese adolescents (N = 2001, 51.8% boys) from Grades 6 (Wave1, Mage = 12.31 years old, SDage = 0.49) to 10. Using latent class growth analysis, three distinct trajectories of friendship conflict frequency were identified: low-slightly increasing, low-sharply increasing, and high-decreasing-stable. Consistent with an escalation hypothesis, the low-sharply increasing group exhibited a greater increase in depressive symptoms but not interpersonal re

BACKGROUND: With rapid population aging and extended post-retirement lifespan, understanding the modifiable psychological and social processes that shape retirees' mental health has become increasingly important for behavioral health management. However, the mechanisms linking pre-retirement work attachment and retirement adjustment to post-retirement mental health remain poorly understood.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 302 Chinese community-dwelling retirees and assessed work attachments (work-family centrality [WFC] and affective organizational commitment [AOC]), retirement a

Two competing hypotheses concerning the effects of stressful environments on the onset of puberty were tested using longitudinal data for a sample of boys from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Paternal alcoholism and maternal social position were used as indicators of family stress. School placement was monitored from school entry to 14 years of age. Teachers rated the boys' disruptive and anxious behaviors, while the boys reported on parenting behaviors at 10 years of age. Pubertal maturation, age of first sexual intercourse and sexual behavior were assessed between 11 and 14 years of age. The

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can manifest in individuals following a traumatic event. There is a paucity of studies focusing on PTSD symptoms in ovarian cancer (OC) patients. This study aimed to investigate the association of social support, mental adjustment and PTSD symptoms in Chinese OC patients with a view to exploring whether mental adjustment could mediate the relationship.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2015 to December 2016. A total of 171 OC subjects were recruited and the effective response rate was 81.3%. The PTSD Checklist-Civilia

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa and across many regions globally, adjusted lockdowns were implemented as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19. These lockdowns had a significant effect on gender-based violence (GBV). Victims, often confined with their abusers, faced limited access to support services. Simultaneously, healthcare workers, including those at the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC), were at the forefront of the pandemic response, dealing with both COVID-19 and GBV cases.
METHOD: A phenomenological approach was used to collect data from nine social workers at the GBVCC i

IMPORTANCE: Countries have varied enormously in how they have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from elimination strategies (eg, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan) to tight suppression (not aiming for elimination but rather to keep infection rates low [eg, South Korea]) to loose suppression (eg, Europe, United States) to virtually unmitigated (eg, Brazil, India). Weighing the best option, based on health and economic consequences due to lockdowns, is necessary.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal policy response, using a net monetary benefit (NMB) approach, for policies ranging from ag

Given the growing number of women who are incarcerated across the United States, the current study investigated the relationships among female inmates' perceptions of their own stress, external locus of control (LOC), social support adequacy, and various aspects of psychological functioning. Generally, female inmates with a self-reported history of childhood sexual abuse did not differ from their nonabused counterparts on the variables of interest. Results suggested that female inmates' perceptions of higher stress, a higher degree of external LOC, and inadequate social support correlated with

BACKGROUND: The oxidative balance score (OBS) is an indicator for assessing total oxidant status. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationships between OBS and factors associated with well-being among middle-aged and elderly women.
METHODS: Dietary habits, lifestyle factors, and factors associated with well-being, including physical, mental, and social health, were assessed based on the first-visit medical records in 385 Japanese women. The OBS was calculated using pro-oxidant factors (fat, saturated fatty acids, n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, iron, alcohol, smoking, bod

The development of Kanner autism in 18 patients (mean age 28 years) in their second and third decade was explored and recorded with respect to factors affecting social competence in adulthood. To validate the diagnoses, we used the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). A version of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS) was employed to assess social adaptation. On average, the individuals showed socially adaptive skills typical for healthy children at the age of 4 years and 3 months. Seventy-two percent of the autistic persons showed a characteristic pattern: they scored highest in daily

Families with young school-age children experienced unique challenges during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. This longitudinal, mixed-methods study explored links between parent-child conversations early in the COVID-19 pandemic and children's later social-emotional adjustment and conceptualizations of the pandemic. In a socioeconomically diverse (36% low-income) sample of 183 families, parents (94% women, 6% men) reported on the content of their conversations about the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020 with their young school-age children (81% White, 8% Hispanic/Latine, 2% Asian/Pac

This study investigates how parental depressive symptoms and drinking problems during early adolescence are linked to adolescents' social adjustment through family-level mechanisms, including marital conflict, psychological control through guilt, and emotional insecurity. Drawing on emotional security theory and a three-wave longitudinal design, data were collected from 281 families beginning when adolescents were in seventh grade and followed annually over 3 years. Structural equation modeling revealed that parental depressive symptoms and drinking problems at Time 1 predicted increased destr

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a crucial stage characterized by profound changes that affect well-being and school adaptation. During this period, social support from family and friends, along with self-esteem, plays a key role in coping with these challenges.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations among family and peer social support, self-esteem, school adjustment, and life satisfaction in Peruvian adolescents.
METHODS: A cross-sectional explanatory study was conducted with 512 Peruvian adolescents (50.8% boys) aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 14.06; SD = 1.572), who completed the Fa

The present cross-sectional study examined the chain mediating roles of spousal support and dyadic adjustment in the relationship between social media addiction and sexual functioning among 211 married women of reproductive age in Qazvin, Iran. Grounded in the Interpersonal Process Model of Intimacy, the study posited that excessive social media use displaces face-to-face interactions, thereby eroding emotional support and relational harmony, which are critical for sexual well-being. Participants completed validated measures assessing social media addiction, spousal support, dyadic adjustment,

A cohort of ordinary Swedish children were followed up from school entry through childhood and adolescence and checked retrospectively from birth to the age of 6 years regarding psychiatric and physical health and contact with the social welfare authorities. The children were allocated to different risk groups at age 7 on the basis of their psycho-physical development expressed as complex reaction time (CRT). It was previously shown that many of the slow CRT children have problems in psychomotor and language development at school, and that many leave compulsory school with poor achievements in

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial adjustment is an important component of recovery after liver transplantation, particularly among young and middle-aged recipients during the early postoperative period. Although illness perception has been associated with psychosocial adjustment, the statistical pathways underlying this association in this population remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between illness perception and psychosocial adjustment and to determine whether perceived social support and quality of life statistically mediated this association.
METHODS: A questionnaire surve
