Brain stimulation by tDCS as treatment option in Autism Spectrum Disorder-A systematic literature review.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction as well as stereotypical and repetitive behavior. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proposed as a new intervention method in ASD with the potential to improve cognitive, motor and social communication abilities by targeting specific underlying neuronal alterations. Here, we report results of a systematic literature review on tDCS effects on EEG and behavioral outcomes, and discuss tDCS as treatment option for ASD. PsychInfo, PubMed, ScienceDire

Communicative misalignment in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Communication deficits are a defining feature of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), manifest during social interactions. Previous studies investigating communicative deficits have largely focused on the perceptual biases, social motivation, cognitive flexibility, or mentalizing abilities of isolated individuals. By embedding autistic individuals in live non-verbal interactions, we characterized a novel cause for their communication deficits. Adults with ASD matched neurotypical individuals in their ability and propensity to generate and modify intelligible behaviors for a communicative partner. H

[Language in autistic disorders].

Autism is a developmental disorder affecting social relationships, communication and flexibility of thought. These three basic aspects of autism may present in many different forms and degrees. Therefore autism should be considered to be a spectrum of autistic disorders rather than a single strictly defined condition. The spectrum of autistic disorders extends from intelligent individuals with acceptable social integration, to severely retarded patients with scarcely any social interaction. Language is almost always affected either in its formal aspects or in its usage. Autistic linguistic dis

Differential diagnosis between autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disorders with emphasis on the preschool period.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders are a heterogeneous group of conditions that manifest as delays or deviations in the acquisition of expected developmental milestones and behavioral changes. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in communication and social interaction and by repetitive and restricted patterns of behavior, interests and activities. The aim of this review is to discuss the clinical features of the differential diagnoses of ASD that are prevalent among preschoolers, focusing on their similarities and disparities. DATA S

Social anxiety disorder as a hidden psychiatric comorbidity among cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety disorder is one of the most popular psychiatric disorders in the general population and is also well known as a very common comorbid psychiatric disorder among patients with major depression. On the other hand, social anxiety disorder has been termed "the neglected anxiety disorder" because its diagnosis is often missed. Furthermore, the potential impact of social anxiety disorder on the psychological distress of cancer patients has not been reported. METHOD: We encountered two cancer patients with refractory depression after cancer diagnosis, in whom comorbid social

A Single Dose, Randomized, Controlled Proof-Of-Mechanism Study of a Novel Vasopressin 1a Receptor Antagonist (RG7713) in High-Functioning Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) include impaired social communication, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. No effective pharmacotherapy for these core deficits exists. Within the domain of social communication, the vasopressin system is implicated in social cognition and social signaling deficits of ASD, and represents a potential therapeutic target. We assessed the effects of a single 20 mg intravenous dose of the arginine vasopressin receptor 1A (V1a) antagonist, RG7713, on exploratory biomarkers (eye tracking), behavioral and clinical measures of social cogni

Dissecting Symptom-linked Dimensions of Resting-State Electroencephalographic Functional Connectivity in Autism with Contrastive Learning.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social interaction deficits, communication difficulties, and restricted/repetitive behaviors or fixated interests. Despite its high prevalence, development of effective therapy for ASD is hindered by its symptomatic and neurophysiological heterogeneities. To collectively dissect the ASD heterogeneity in neurophysiology and symptoms, we develop a new analytical framework combining contrastive learning and sparse canonical correlation analysis to identify resting-state EEG connectivity dimensions linked to AS

A neurodevelopmental disorders perspective into music, social attention, and social bonding.

Our commentary addresses how two neurodevelopmental disorders, Williams syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, provide novel insights into the credible signaling and music and social bonding hypotheses presented in the two target articles. We suggest that these neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized by atypical social communication, allow us to test hypotheses about music, social bonding, and their underlying neurobiology.

CDK13-related disorder: a deep characterization of speech and language abilities and addition of 33 novel cases.

Speech and language impairments are central features of CDK13-related disorder. While pathogenic CDK13 variants have been associated with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), a systematic characterisation of communication has not been conducted. Here we examined speech, language, non-verbal communication skills, social behaviour and health and development in 41 individuals with CDK13-related disorder from 10 countries (male = 22, median-age 7 years 1 month, range 1-25 years; 33 novel). Most participants used augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in early childhood (24/41). CAS was com

Structural neuroimaging correlates of social deficits are similar in autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: analysis from the POND Network.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been associated with difficulties recognizing and responding to social cues. Neuroimaging studies have begun to map the social brain; however, the specific neural substrates contributing to social deficits in neurodevelopmental disorders remain unclear. Three hundred and twelve children underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging of the brain (controls = 32, OCD = 44, ADHD = 77, ASD = 159; mean age = 11). Their social deficits were quantified on the Social Communica

Differential associations between sensory response patterns and language, social, and communication measures in children with autism or other developmental disabilities.

PURPOSE: To examine patterns of sensory responsiveness (i.e., hyperresponsiveness, hyporesponsiveness, and sensory seeking) as factors that may account for variability in social-communicative symptoms of autism and variability in language, social, and communication skill development in children with autism or other developmental disabilities (DDs). METHOD: Children with autistic disorder (AD; n = 72, mean age = 52.3 months) and other DDs (n = 44, mean age = 48.1 months) participated in a protocol measuring sensory response patterns; social-communicative symptoms of autism; and language, socia

Case report: Co-occurring autism spectrum disorder (Level One) and obsessive-compulsive disorder in a gender-diverse adolescent.

This fictionalized case report captures the common themes and considerations during the diagnostic assessment and behavioral treatment of adolescents demonstrating symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as gender-diversity concerns. Our patient was a white, non-Hispanic 17-year-old individual who identified as gender-neutral but had been assigned female at birth. Symptoms presented were social withdrawal, rigid rule-following behavior, unusual repetitive behavior, impairments in social commun

Communication disorders: what to look for, and when to refer.

Communication impairments, with or without a swallowing disorder, are common among older adults. Aphasia, which is usually caused by a focal lesion, can affect spoken and written language, auditory comprehension, and reading ability but by itself does not affect intellectual and cognitive abilities. A cognitive-communicative impairment is related to underlying cognitive deficits in memory, attention, or visual perception and is seen with traumatic brain injury and nontreatable dementia. Voice and speech impairments such as dysarthria and apraxia of speech may lead to self-imposed social isolat

Communication-related assessments in an Angelman syndrome mouse model.

INTRODUCTION: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor deficits, seizures, some autistic-like behaviors, and severe impairment of speech. A dysfunction of the maternally imprinted UBE3A gene, coupled with a functional yet silenced paternal copy, results in AS. Although studies of transgenic mouse models have revealed a great deal about neural populations and rescue timeframes for specific features of AS, these studies have largely failed to examine intermediate phenotypes that contribute to the profound communicative disabilities associated with AS. Profiling Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Traits in Children with SYNGAP1-Related Intellectual Disability.

SYNGAP1-related ID is a genetic condition characterised by global developmental delay and epilepsy. Individuals with SYNGAP1-related ID also commonly show differences in attention and social communication/interaction and frequently receive additional diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We thus set out to quantify ASD and ADHD symptoms in children with this syndrome. To assess ASD and ADHD, parents and caregivers of a child with SYNGAP1-related ID (N = 34) or a typically developing control (N = 21) completed the Social Responsiveness S

How men with alcohol use disorder perceive communication, couple satisfaction, relational boredom, and quality of life compared to wives: Findings from a hospital-based study.

In India, use of alcohol between 10 and 70 years is increasing significantly as per the Government of India, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. Chronic alcohol use in men can potentially disrupt their relationships with their wives in several ways, leading to poor communication, trust issues, emotional disconnection, physical abuse, financial strain, and neglecting responsibilities. These factors may reduce the quality of life of the couple and negatively impact the couple's overall well-being. This cross-sectional study assesses the communication, couple satisfaction, relational boredo
