Child Sexual Abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in France: Prevalence and Comparison With Other Social Spheres.

This study aims to estimate and compare Roman Catholic Church-related child sexual abuse (CSA) prevalence and characteristics to CSA in other social spheres in France since 1950. Using a cross-sectional representative web-based survey of 28,026 adults in 2021, the weighted prevalence of CSA was estimated according to six social spheres of perpetration: family, Church, school, sports club, artistic activities, and summer camps. Altogether, 14.60%, 95% confidence interval [CI: 13.41; 15.80] of female respondents and 6.38% [5.73; 7.03] of male respondents had experienced CSA. Family was the most

"You Can Sit in the Middle or Be One of the Outliers": Older Male Athletes and the Complexities of Social Comparison.

Sporting events for older adults are proliferating in both popularity and participation numbers, mirroring the growth that is occurring globally with an aging population. Preliminary evidence indicates that older athletes have a tendency to compare themselves (in terms of their performance, participation, and aging) to inactive older adults deemed "worse-off." Our aim was to examine the stories and experiences of older, male Masters athletes, not only in terms of their own lives and in relation to others but also in the broader context of current (neoliberal) policies that promote sport across

Social Anxiety Disorder and Perceived Criticism in Intimate Relationships: Comparisons With Normal and Clinical Control Groups.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have difficulties in their romantic relationships, including decreased satisfaction and intimacy, but the reasons for these difficulties are poorly understood. Because fear of negative evaluation is a cardinal feature of SAD, perceived criticism from a romantic partner may play a central role in socially anxious individuals' relationships. In the present study, we compared levels of perceived, expressed, and observed criticism and reactions to criticism among individuals with SAD and their partners (n = 21), individuals with other anxiety disorder

Work Accommodations and Natural Supports for Employees with Severe Mental Illness in Social Businesses: An International Comparison.

Little is known about the types of work accommodations and natural supports that are useful for people experiencing severe mental illness working in social businesses. We conducted an exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional investigation in Australia, Canada and Italy to study the nature of work accommodations and natural supports available in social businesses. Study findings are drawn from survey responses of a convenience sample of 90 employees with self-reported psychiatric disabilities. Results showed that, regardless of the country, social businesses provide many work accommodations

Patterns of social inequalities across pregnancy and birth outcomes: a comparison of individual and neighborhood socioeconomic measures.

BACKGROUND: This paper identifies patterns of health inequalities (consistency and magnitude) of socioeconomic disparities for multiple maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes that represent different health care needs of mothers and infants. METHODS: Using cross-sectional national data (unweighted sample = 6,421, weighted =76,508) from the Canadian Maternity Experiences Survey linked with 2006 Canadian census data, we categorized 25 health indicators of mothers of singletons into five groups of MCH outcomes (A. maternal and infant health status indicators; B. prenatal care; C. maternal expe

Social comparison processes, narrative mapping and their shaping of the cancer experience: a case study of an elite athlete.

Drawing on data generated by life history interviews and fieldwork observations we illuminate the ways in which a young elite athlete named David (a pseudonym) gave meaning to his experiences of cancer that eventually led to his death. Central to this process were the ways in which David utilized both social comparisons and a narrative map provided by the published autobiography of Lance Armstrong (2000). Our analysis reveals the selective manner in which social comparison processes operated around the following key dimensions: mental attitude to treatment; the sporting body; the ageing body;

The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale: a comparison of the psychometric properties of self-report and clinician-administered formats.

BACKGROUND: The clinician-administered version of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS-CA) is a commonly used assessment device for the evaluation of social anxiety disorder and has been shown to have strong psychometric characteristics. Because of its apparently straightforward rating format and potential savings in time and effort, interest in the use of the LSAS as a self-report (LSAS-SR) measure has increased, and the LSAS-SR has been used in a number of studies. However, the psychometric properties of the LSAS-SR have not been well established. METHODS: This study examined the psycho

An eight-year longitudinal comparison of clinical course and characteristics of social phobia among men and women.

OBJECTIVE: Social phobia is a chronic disorder with a higher prevalence among women than men. Data from an eight-year longitudinal study were analyzed to investigate the course of social phobia and to explore potential sex differences in the course and characteristics of the illness. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the Harvard/Brown Anxiety Research Program, a naturalistic, observational study begun in 1989 in which patients with social phobia are assessed every six to 12 months. Treatment was observed but not prescribed by the program personnel. Data on comorbidity, remission, and health-re

The influence of family and social factors on the course of psychiatric illness. A comparison of schizophrenic and depressed neurotic patients.

This study is a replication and extension of past work carried out by Brown, Birley and Wing (1972) concerning the influence of family life on the course of schizophrenia. In the original research the index of emotion expressed by a key relative about the patient at the time of key admission proved to be the best single predictor of symptomatic relapse in the nine months after discharge from hospital. In the present study this main finding of Brown et al has been replicated for two clinically different groups of psychiatric patients. The expressed emotion of the relative again seems to be asso

Exposure to fitness role models on social media and social physique anxiety among college students: the sequential mediating roles of upward body comparison and body self-discrepancy.

INTRODUCTION: Fitness role models on social media combine exercise- and health-oriented communication with highly visible body ideals. This study examined associations among exposure to fitness role models, upward body comparison, body self-discrepancy, and social physique anxiety among college students, including separate and theoretically ordered indirect associations. METHODS: The study comprised a preliminary measurement phase and a formal cross-sectional survey. A pilot study with 162 valid responses examined item performance, internal consistency, and dimensional structure. The formal s

"Looking up" linked to feeling down: a meta-analysis of online upward social comparison and psychological maladjustment.

INTRODUCTION: Social media has become a routine setting for self-evaluation, and upward social comparison with perceived better-off others may be associated with psychological maladjustment. However, the average magnitude of this association across outcome domains and the contextual factors that may moderate it remain unclear. METHODS: This meta-analysis synthesized 94 effect sizes from 54 independent samples (N = 36,583) using a three-level random-effects framework that modeled dependence among effect sizes within studies. RESULTS: The estimated average correlation between upward social com

Changes in documentation of social risk factor diagnosis codes: comparison of Medicaid Accountable Care Organization model types.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying social risk factors during the perinatal period may improve pregnancy-related outcomes. In 2018, the Massachusetts Medicaid program implemented an accountable care organization (ACO)-which required social risk factor screening-under 2 ACO model types: Model A (health system/Medicaid managed care plan partnership model) and Model B (primary care practice model). METHODS: Using the 2016-2020 Massachusetts All Payer Claims Database and a difference-in-differences (DiD) design, we compared changes in any social risk factor documentation (ie, ICD-10 Z-codes) for Medicaid-

Resting brain perfusion in social anxiety disorder: a voxel-wise whole brain comparison with healthy control subjects.

INTRODUCTION: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a condition characterised by fears of social interaction and performance situations. SAD may be related to a dysregulation or hyperactivity of cortico-limbic circuitry. This is the first voxel-based whole brain study comparing resting function in SAD to a normal control group. METHODS: Resting perfusion in adult subjects with generalised SAD was compared with healthy adult volunteers using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM). In subjects with SAD, correlations were also sought between resting perfusion and clinical severity measured using the to

How does social comparison within a self-help group influence adjustment to chronic illness? A longitudinal study.

Despite the growing popularity of self-help groups for people with chronic illness, there has been surprisingly little research into how these may support adjustment to illness. This study investigated the role that social comparison, occurring within a self-help group, may play in adjustment to chronic illness. A model of adjustment based on control process theory and response shift theory was tested to determine whether social comparisons predicted adjustment after controlling for the catalyst for adjustment (disease severity) and antecedents (demographic and psychological factors). A sample

Social comparison threat and coping: affective, cognitive and behavioral outcomes in response to false performance-related feedback.

BACKGROUND: Social comparisons shape our behavior. The general comparative processing model (gComp) suggests that evaluating one's attributes against salient upward social standards elicits motivational appraisal ranging from threat to challenge, each typically associated with corresponding pessimistic or optimistic coping responses. This, in turn, manifests in specific affective, cognitive, and behavioral responses. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide an initial experimental test of gComp assumptions. METHODS: Participants completed a 2-back task framed as indicative of acad

Comparison of appearance dissatisfaction and appearance-related social discomfort among people with systemic sclerosis and burn injury.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Visible differences from medical conditions and injuries are associated with body image concerns, particularly among females and young adults. We compared dissatisfaction with appearance and social discomfort between people with systemic sclerosis and burn injury, since the extent and implications of appearance changes are well-established in burn injury. METHODS: We searched PubMed, PsycInfo, EMBASE, and CINAHL to 8 December 2024 for studies that used the Satisfaction with Appearance Scale among adults with burn injury or systemic sclerosis. A Comparison of Lichen Sclerosus and Vulvodynia Content Across Social Media Platforms: What Is Trending Over Time.

OBJECTIVES: Vulvovaginal diseases are common gynecologic complaints and patients often turn to social media (SM) for medical information. The objective of this study is to examine vulvovaginal content on SM and how it has changed over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four SM platforms were searched (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube) at 2 time points from March 30 to May 7, 2021, and again from November 24 to December 10, 2022. Newer SM platforms became popular during this time interval and thus TikTok and Reddit were included in the search in 2022. This study focused on 2 common vu

Factors determining the social participation of older adults: A comparison between Japan and Korea using EASS 2012.

AIMS: Japan and Korea are the world's most aged and most rapidly aging nations. They both have low fertility rates, thereby intensifying the importance of social structures to aid a large, dependent population of older adults. Common strategies involve improving their social participation, which enhances their physical and mental health, so they are supporting society rather than being supported. Since the social participation rates in both countries are not as high as those of Western countries, it is critical to shed light on the factors related to social participation of the elderly.
