Perceived discrimination and monocyte abundance in older adults: Findings from the Health and Retirement Study.

Perceived discrimination is a pervasive social stressor linked to adverse health outcomes, and these effects appear to be mediated at least in part by immune system alterations that may affect inflammation-related diseases. To determine the cellular mechanisms involved, we investigated the association between everyday perceived discrimination and circulating monocyte counts in data from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study Venous Blood Study (n = 6332). After adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol consumption, individuals reporting higher levels of percei

Self-concealment, discrimination, and mental health in Macedonia: Disparities experienced by sexual and gender minorities.

While sexual and gender minorities (SGM)-based discrimination and poor mental health is well established in the literature within Western contexts, there is a significant gap in our understanding in other regions, specifically Southeastern Europe. Additionally, limited information exists on self-concealment's role in these pathways. We explored the relationship between self-concealment, discrimination and mental health in Macedonia, a country rife with sociopolitical oppression towards the population. We utilised regression and structural equation models to identify the effects of self-conceal

Childhood Adversity Is Associated with Adult Theory of Mind and Social Affiliation, but Not Face Processing.

People vary substantially in their ability to acquire and maintain social ties. Here, we use a combined epidemiological and individual differences approach to understand the childhood roots of adult social cognitive functioning. We assessed exposure to 25 forms of traumatic childhood experiences in over 5000 adults, along with measures of face discrimination, face memory, theory of mind, social motivation, and social support. Retrospectively-reported experiences of parental maltreatment in childhood (particularly physical abuse) were the most broadly and robustly associated with adult variatio

Decoding social touch: A multi-modal exploration of tactile perception, gender and culture.

Social touch plays a vital role in human development, communication, and general well-being. However, the mechanisms underlying how social touch elicits pleasant or aversive responses are poorly understood. Furthermore, it remains unclear how alterations in sensory processing, at both the perceptual level (i.e. detection and discrimination of stimuli) and behavioral level (i.e. response to stimuli), shape the experience of social touch, in addition to contextual factors such as gender and culture. In the current study, we used vibrotactile psychophysics and a novel social touch paradigm to ass

The influence of racial discrimination on smoking among young black men: A prospective analysis.

Racial discrimination is a documented risk factor for smoking among Black men; mechanisms of effect and protective processes remain to be investigated. This study examined the mediating effect of anger/hostility on the association between racial discrimination and smoking and the influence of protective social ties in buffering the effects of racial discrimination. Hypotheses were tested using longitudinal data from a study of 505 Black men ages 19-22. Data collected for the study occurred at three timepoints, each 12 months apart. Racial discrimination is associated with increases in cigarett

Neurodegenerative disease. Genetic discrimination in Huntington disease.

A survey conducted in Canada examined the prevalence of perceived genetic discrimination against patients with Huntington disease. The respondents reported discrimination not only by insurance or mortgage companies, but also in family and social contexts. Discrimination was more frequently attributed to family history than to genetic test results.

Black Women Living with HIV: A Latent Profile Analysis of Intersectional Adversities, Resilience, and Mental Health.

Black women living with HIV (BWLWH) face adversities, including discrimination (race, HIV, and gender related) and trauma. This study examines which latent profiles of resilience (R) and adversity (A) are most prevalent and their relationships to mental health among 119 BWLWH [age = 44.1 (standard deviation = 10.9)]. Questionnaires measured resilience (post-traumatic growth, trait/coping resilience, religious coping, social support), adversity (discrimination, trauma, microaggressions), and mental health [post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, post-traumatic cognitions (PTC), and depr

Social stressors and inflammatory gene expression in U.S. Chinese immigrants.

OBJECTIVE: Immigrants comprise approximately 14% of the U.S. population and experience increasing rates of chronic disease after migration that are not wholly attributable to behavioral acculturation. The present study examined whether social stressors commonly experienced by immigrants (e.g., acculturative stress, discrimination) are associated with proinflammatory gene expression in a sample of Chinese immigrants residing in the United States. METHOD: Participants (n = 216) in an observational study completed assessments of acculturative stress, perceived discrimination, and social isolatio

Racial Discrimination and Mental Health among Asian Americans during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating health, economic, and social effects on people throughout American society. At the same time, racism spread alongside the virus. As China was blamed for COVID-19, Asian Americans became targets of prejudice and discrimination. In this study we document the racism experienced by Asian Americans during the pandemic and explore its link to mental health. Using the National Couples' Health and Time Study's Asian American oversample, we investigate the relationship between discrimination and COVID stress and mental health outcomes during the pandemic (anxie

Depression among Black bisexual men with early and later life adversities.

This study examined the role of adulthood adversities in the relationship between childhood adversities and depression in 117 HIV-positive Black men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) and who have histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Men were participants in the Enhanced Sexual Health Intervention for Men, a 6-session health intervention, and, at baseline, reported their experiences of CSA, childhood adversities, perceived discrimination, chronic stress, social support, and depressive symptoms. The relationship between childhood adversities, including CSA, and depression was mediated

Intersectional Discrimination of Romani Women Forcibly Sterilized in the Former Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic.

This paper reviews domestic and international activism seeking justice for Romani and other women harmed by coercive, forced, and involuntary sterilization in the former Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic. Framed by Michel Foucault's theory of biopower, it summarizes the history of these abuses and describes human rights campaigns involving domestic and international litigation, advocacy, and grassroots activism, as well as the responses of the Czech governments. The paper describes how legal and policy work during the past decade has led to recognition of coercive, forced, and involuntary ster

Exploring Associations Between Social Factors and Current Substance Use Among Older African Americans with HIV.

Background: Substance use is highly prevalent among older people with HIV and continues to have a negative impact on engagement along the HIV care continuum, particularly among African Americans (AA). Social factors like resource insecurity, stigma, and discrimination may play a role in substance use behaviors. However, there is limited research on how these social factors impact substance use among older people with HIV. Objectives: The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine associations between demographic and social factors and substance use among older AAs with HIV. Results: Fift

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation of right temporoparietal area inhibits self-recognition.

Self-other discrimination is a crucial mechanism for social cognition. Neuroimaging and neurostimulation research has pointed to the involvement of the right temporoparietal region in a variety of self-other discrimination tasks. Although repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over the right temporoparietal area has been shown to disrupt self-other discrimination in face-recognition tasks, no research has investigated the effect of increasing the cortical excitability in this region on self-other face discrimination. Here we used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investig

Comparison of Black and white individuals who report diagnoses of schizophrenia in a national sample of US adults: Discrimination and service use.

BACKGROUND: While there is increasing recognition of disparities in healthcare for Black Americans, there have been no comparisons in a nationally representative U.S. sample of Black and White adults with clinical diagnoses of schizophrenia. METHODS: Using nationally representative survey data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III, we compared Black (n = 240, 36.2%) and White (n = 423, 63.8%) adults who report having been told by a physician that they have schizophrenia. Protective Factors of the Longitudinal Association Between Discrimination and Mental Health Among Mexican-Origin Youth.

OBJECTIVE: The negative effects of discrimination on mental health are well established. Few longitudinal studies have investigated protective factors that could mitigate these effects for youth of Mexican origin in the United States. This 3-wave longitudinal study examined individual-, family-, peer-, and neighborhood-level protective factors attenuating the effect of discrimination-related stress on youth depressive and anxiety symptoms. METHOD: A total of surveyed 344 Mexican-origin youths (ages 12-15) from 2 Midwestern counties were surveyed longitudinally over 3 annual waves. Youths comp

Peer-based discrimination and adolescent emotional and sleep health: A daily examination of direct and buffering associations.

Using 10-day daily diary data collected in 2019 from 10th grade students in southern U.S. (N = 161, 57% Latina/x/o, 21% Biracial, 10% Asian, 9% White, 4% Black; 55% female, Mage  = 15.51), this study examined various forms of peer-based discrimination in adolescents' everyday lives. Results showed that personally experienced discrimination, peer racial teasing, and vicarious discrimination were frequent and impactful events. Results also provided strong evidence for the protective role of psychological resilience and some evidence for the protective-reactive roles of peer support and school cl

Do non-invasive prenatal tests promote discrimination against people with Down syndrome? What should be done?

By implementation of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for the diagnosis of Down syndrome (DS) in maternity care, an ethical debate is newly inflamed how to deal with this information. Fears of the consequences of an increased use of NIPT are justified with the same arguments when amniocentesis and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) were introduced decades ago. It can be expected that the prevalence of people with DS would significantly increase in Western societies as a result of the increasing age of pregnant women and the improved medical care for people with DS. The net effect as t

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT): does the practice discriminate against persons with disabilities?

The most well-known goal of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is still to determine whether or not a fetus has trisomy 21. Since women often terminate the pregnancy upon a positive result, there is concern that the use of NIPT contributes to discrimination against persons with disabilities. If this concern is justified, it could have an impact on the wider social acceptability of existing testing practices and their potential further expansion. This paper demonstrates four different versions of the discrimination worry, indicates how international policy papers have reacted to them, and ide

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Everyday Discrimination Measures in a National Sample of U.S. Adults.

BACKGROUND: Everyday discrimination is a pervasive social stressor that has been linked to adverse health outcomes and contributes to persistent health inequities in the United States. Understanding contemporary patterns of discrimination across racial and ethnic groups remains an important public health priority. Our study examined racial and ethnic differences in multiple forms of everyday discrimination among U.S. adults. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2023 National Health Interview Survey, a national U.S. sample of non-institutionalized adults aged ≥ 18 years. The analytic sample inclu
