Mom genes and dad genes: genomic imprinting in the regulation of social behaviors.

Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic phenomenon in mammals that affects brain development and behavior. Imprinting involves the regulation of allelic expression for some genes in offspring that depends on whether alleles are inherited from mothers compared to fathers, and is thought to provide parental control over offspring social behavior phenotypes. Imprinted gene expression is prevalent in the mammalian brain, and human imprinted gene mutations are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodivergent social behavior in Prader-Willi Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, and autism. Social anxiety and romantic conflict: Examining prospective interpersonal dynamics.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with impairment in close relationship functioning, including romantic relationships. Although interpersonal theories point to dimensions of dominance and warmth as relevant factors, the momentary interpersonal dynamics that may be contributing to relationship problems remain poorly understood. In the present study, we examined contemporaneous and prospective associations between dominance and warmth in individuals with (n = 30) and without (n = 29) SAD and their romantic partners during a 10-min conflict task. Using the Continuous Assessment of Inter

Winning isn't everything: mood and testosterone regulate the cortisol response in competition.

Dominance contests are recurrent and widespread causes of stress among mammals. Studies of activation of the stress axis in social defeat - as reflected in levels of adrenal glucocorticoid, cortisol - have generated scattered and sometimes contradictory results, suggesting that biopsychological individual differences might play an important mediating role, at least in humans. In the context of a larger study of the regulation of endocrine responses to competition, we evaluated the notion that mood states, such as self-assurance and hostility, may influence cortisol reactivity to dominance cues

Memory bias and personality characteristics in college students with social anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Some individuals are more susceptible to recalling false information about events that never happened in their life. Nevertheless, there are several factors, such as personality characteristics, that appear to be related to memory performance. Social anxiety also provokes memory deficits for events that happen to other people, because these individuals tend to focus on their own inner selves rather than on external signs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the personality characteristics of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) on memory performance. METHODS: I

Observed differences in social behaviors exhibited in peer interactions between youth with spina bifida and their peers: neuropsychological correlates.

OBJECTIVE: To identify differences in social behaviors in observed peer interactions between children with spina bifida (SB) and peers, and to examine neuropsychological correlates of these differences. METHOD: A total of 100 youth (aged 8-15 years) with SB and peers participated in video-recorded interaction tasks, which were coded for interaction style, affect, and collaboration. Children with SB also completed a neuropsychological test battery. RESULTS: Children with SB demonstrated less adaptive social behaviors in peer interactions, particularly within the interaction style domain. Obse

Activity of a vmPFC-DRN Pathway Corresponds With Resistance to Acute Social Defeat Stress.

The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) plays a critical role in stress resilience through top-down inhibition of key stress-sensitive limbic and hindbrain structures, including the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). In a model of experience-dependent stress resistance, socially dominant Syrian hamsters display fewer signs of anxiety following acute social defeat when compared to subordinate or control counterparts. Further, dominants activate vmPFC neurons to a greater degree during stress than do subordinates and become stress-vulnerable following pharmacological inhibition of the vmPFC. Dominan

Personality changes in adult subjects with major depressive disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder treated with paroxetine.

BACKGROUND: Human and animal studies point to 3 dimensions of personality that change during pharmacotherapy with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Specifically, harm avoidance has been found to decrease, social dominance has been found to increase, and hostility in social situations has been found to decrease with SSRI treatment. We sought to determine personality changes in subjects with either major depressive disorder (MDD) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treated with paroxetine. We also sought to determine whether or not these personality changes were associated with

Threatening faces and social anxiety: a literature review.

A threatening facial expression is a potent social sign of hostility or dominance. During the past 20 years, photographs of threatening faces have been increasingly included as stimuli in studies with socially anxious participants, based on the hypothesis that a threatening face is especially salient to people with fears of social interaction or negative evaluation. The purpose of this literature review is to systematically evaluate the accumulated research and suggest possible avenues for further research. The main conclusion is that photographs of threatening faces engage a broad range of pe

Collective narcissism moderates the effect of in-group image threat on intergroup hostility.

Results of 4 experiments demonstrated that under in-group image threat collective narcissism predicts retaliatory intergroup hostility. Under in-group criticism (vs. praise) collective narcissists expressed intention to harm the offending out-group but not other, nonoffending out-groups. This effect was specific to collective narcissism and was replicated in studies that accounted for the overlap between collective narcissism and individual narcissism, in-group positivity (in-group identification, blind and constructive patriotism), social dominance orientation, and right wing authoritarianism

Smiles may go unseen in generalized social anxiety disorder: evidence from binocular rivalry for reduced visual consciousness of positive facial expressions.

Research has demonstrated increased attention to negative social cues and reduced attention to positive social cues in generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD), but little is known about whether GSAD also involves differences in lower levels of visual processing. This study explored visual experience in GSAD compared to participants with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and healthy controls using binocular rivalry. Participants were presented with dissimilar images to each eye, and the two images competed for perceptual dominance. Consistent with the hypothesis that GSAD involves a reduced

Circuits underlying social function and dysfunction.

Substantial advances have been made toward understanding the genetic and environmental risk factors for autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder with social impairment as a core feature. In combination with optogenetic and chemogenetic tools to manipulate neural circuits in vivo, it is now possible to use model systems to test how specific neural circuits underlie social function and dysfunction. Here, we review the literature that has identified circuits associated with social interest (sociability), social reward, social memory, dominance, and aggression, and we outline a preliminary roadmap of

COVID-19 Vaccination Refusal in Sweden: Anti-Vaccination Attitudes and the Role of Contrarian Worldviews, Political Orientation, and Psychological Dispositions.

Why do some people refuse vaccination? The current study contributes to answering this question by examining multiple predictors of COVID-19 vaccination refusal in Sweden. We further explore how these predictors are associated with anti-vaccination attitudes and to what extent anti-vaccination attitudes mediate the association with vaccination refusal. Using original survey data from 1293 Swedish citizens analyzed with structural equation modeling, we examined whether anti-vaccination attitudes accounted for associations between contrarian worldviews (e.g., conspiracy mentality, climate change

Critical consciousness moderates the relationship between transphobia and "bathroom bill" voting.

In recent years, antitransgender legislation that focuses on gender and the use of public restrooms-so-called bathroom bills-has been considered in many states in the United States. The present study was designed to extend research on transphobic attitudes and elucidate links between religious fundamentalism, social dominance orientation, transphobia, and voting for bathroom bills. Further, we examined the moderating influence of critical consciousness on the relationship between transphobic attitudes and voting on a hypothetical bathroom bill. Results of a moderated mediation multinomial logi

The Language Gap: Disparities in Expressive Versus Receptive Language in Young Children With Neurodevelopmental Conditions.

PURPOSE: This study examined factors related to three language profiles (i.e., expressive dominance [ED], receptive dominance [RD], and non-dominance [ND]), among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), other developmental delays (DD), and a sample of controls from the general population (POP). METHODS: Data were from the Study to Explore Early Development (SEED), a multi-site, US-based, case-control study of correlates of ASD among 2.5-to-5-year-olds (N = 4905). We examined factors associated with language dominance using multinomial regression models to estimate odds ratios and 95% co

Reading characters in voices: Ratings of personality characteristics from voices predict proneness to auditory verbal hallucinations.

People rapidly make first impressions of others, often based on very little information-minimal exposure to faces or voices is sufficient for humans to make up their mind about personality of others. While there has been considerable research on voice personality perception, much less is known about its relevance to hallucination-proneness, despite auditory hallucinations being frequently perceived as personified social agents. The present paper reports two studies investigating the relation between voice personality perception and hallucination-proneness in non-clinical samples. A voice perso

Modeling Female Social Aggression: Predictors from Multiple Developmental Contexts.

A diverse array of proposed antecedents of social aggression (SA) were examined in two studies. This work is informed by ecological systems theory and examined predictors from the micro- and mesosystems. In Study 1, women (n = 284). completed measures of aggression, digit ratio, emotional intelligence (EI), agreeableness, parenting styles, attachment insecurity with parents and peers, and television (TV) consumption. Aggression correlated with EI, agreeableness, parental authoritarianism, attachment insecurity with fathers and peers, and TV consumption; these variables accounted for 22% of the

Political emotions shape preferences for leaders' facial traits: anger favours dominance, fear favours trustworthiness.

Political emotions may shape not only which issues citizens prioritise, but also which social traits they value in leaders. Here we tested whether anger and fear elicited by real political issues differentially influence preferences for political leaders' facial traits. A balanced sample of U.S. Republicans and Democrats identified the political issue that made them most angry or most afraid and then chose which leader would best address that issue using computer-generated faces varying in dominance and trustworthiness. Participants chose a more dominant and less trustworthy-looking leader mor

Distinguishing narcissism and hostility: similarities and differences in interpersonal circumplex and five-factor correlates.

Narcissism and hostility are both characterized by dysfunctional social interactions, including tendencies to perceive slights, experience anger, and behave aggressively. The aim of this study was to examine the similarities and differences of narcissism and hostility, using 2 conceptual tools-the interpersonal circumplex and the Five-factor model. In a sample of 292 undergraduate men and women, composite measures of hostility (i.e., Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire [Buss & Perry, 1992] and Cook-Medley Hostility [Cook & Medley, 1954] total scores) were inversely correlated with affiliation

Psychoanalysis and Affective Neuroscience. The Motivational/Emotional System of Aggression in Human Relations.

This article highlights the evolutionary biological epistemology in Freud psychoanalytic theory. The concepts of aggressive and sexual drives are cornerstones of the psychoanalytic epistemological system, concerning the motivational/emotional roots of mental functioning. These biological roots of mental functioning, especially with regard to aggressive drive, have gradually faded away from psychoanalytic epistemology, as we show in this article. Currently, however, Neurosciences, and in particular Affective Neuroscience (Panksepp, 1998), can help us to have a better understanding of the biolog
