Humans are social learners who depend on observing others to acquire knowledge, norms, and behaviors, a capacity that underlies cumulative cultural evolution. Social learning unfolds in two stages: upstream selection determines what information becomes visible, and downstream selection determines what learners copy from that visible sample. Downstream selection occurs through biases such as conformity bias (copying what appears common) and prestige bias (copying those who appear highly respected). These downstream biases can be adaptive when upstream selection yields a sample that reflects the

The purpose of this article is to present the evolution of scientific work on human memory from the end of the 19th century. The work of experimental psychology and neuropsychology first dominated the scientific scene. Research in the humanities and social sciences was established in the interwar period, but without any real interaction with psychology and neurosciences. We recall the most emblematic historical works of two distinct visions of memory: those of the experimental psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus who measured memory, on himself, from lists of meaningless syllables, and those of the

UNLABELLED: This paper presents a historical retrospective of the evolution of the clinical aspects of stuttering, and refers to social, cultural, political, and economic variables that might have exerted an influence on this evolution, particularly in relation to the authors' experience in Israel. The retrospective commences in the early decades of the 20th century, when speech and language pathology did not exist as a profession, and presents the major approaches to therapy in children and adults employed by clinicians throughout the century. We focused on the impact of the change that occur

Using a dialectic method of philosophic inquiry, the actual ethical, legal, and social situation associated with genetic testing of beryllium-exposed workers in Department of Energy nuclear weapons facilities for markers of chronic beryllium disease is described. The cultural evolution of a caste system in a similar situation, and its social and biological implications, among uranium miners in the Erz Gebirge of Central Europe and on the Colorado Plateau of the United States, marked by suicide and lung disease, including cancer, is also described. The historically persistent social disease res

INTRODUCTION: Few studies on social skills training essentially based on ABA techniques are dedicated to children with autism aged 5 to 10 years whereas autistic disorders can be diagnosed in very early childhood. Generally, the main criticisms about these social skills training are: shortness of programs (around 20 sessions), no manual with precise descriptions of sessions and used techniques, and a lack of generalization of the learned skills in everyday life.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the evolution (before/after) of symptoms and sociocommunicative skills of 7 children with autism and no ment

The evolution of the human brain has long been framed in terms of sexual selection, with an emphasis on consistent but small on-average volumetric differences between males and females. In this review, we present new molecular, genetic and clinical findings regarding neurodevelopment, cortical expansion and the production of sex steroid hormones, such as testosterone and oestradiol, by the placenta during pregnancy. We discuss converging evidence that on-average sex differences are relevant for human evolution but are characterised by significant overlap between the sexes and more adaptations

In many species, vocal communication is essential for coordinating social behaviors including courtship, mating, parenting, rivalry, and alarm signaling. Effective communication requires accurate production, detection, and classification of signals, as well as selection of socially appropriate responses. Understanding how signals are generated and how acoustic signals are perceived is key to understanding the neurobiology of social behaviors. Here we review our long-standing research program focused on Xenopus, a frog genus which has provided valuable insights into the mechanisms and evolution

The regulation of reproductive division of labor in eusocial insects is pivotal for the evolution of social behavior and the maintenance of eusociality. Primitively eusocial bumblebee workers retain reproductive totipotency, with dominant workers capable of ovarian activation and egg-laying. Here, we investigated the cellular and molecular basis of reproductive hierarchy in Bombus terrestris by constructing a single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas of the ovary in queenless bumblebee groups. Using single-nucleus RNA sequencing, we profiled ovarian cell types and revealed that α-worker bees possess

Opinion evolution in social networks represents a complex dynamical process, particularly when accounting for the interplay between expressed and private opinions-a dynamic that captures the tension between social conformity and individual authenticity. In this paper, we examine the evolution of these two opinion types in signed networks using the expressed and private opinion (EPO) model, in which each individual carries distinct expressed and private opinions. By applying the lifting technique to the EPO model, we rigorously address the influence of negative edges, while the path-dependence

Patients' burn out : evolution and prognosis in case of delayed support. In France burn out can be considered as a medical and social scourge. In his late care, it is regularly associated with depression, post-traumatic stress, psychological and somatic burden and chronic diseases. The clinical aspects are complex based on its symptomatic diversity and causal heterogeneous factors. Patient's care is central and his/ her suffering should be recognized. The general practitioner needs to coordinate the treatment and drives a multidisciplinary team able to address the difficulty of the medical, so

Living in groups is more stressful and less straightforward than we usually assume. In order to live in large groups, mammals need to find solutions that allow these stresses to be defused. I show that, in primates, this has involved successively adding increasingly costly structural, behavioural, and cognitive solutions that are dependent on the evolution of large brains. Primate social evolution consists of a series of glass ceilings on group size that restrict the habitats that species could occupy. Group-living creates stresses that, all else equal, naturally lead to group fragmentation, a

The use of information and communication technology (ICT) in child welfare services has increased significantly during the last decades, and so have the possibilities to process health data. Parton (2009) states that this evolution has led to a shift in the nature of social work itself: from 'the social' to 'the informational'. It is claimed that social workers primarily are becoming information processors concerned with the gathering, sharing and monitoring of information, instead of being focused on the relational dimensions of their work. However, social workers have considerable discretion

Human beings are by nature social animals, but for some, social scrutiny is a source of extreme anguish. Those with social phobia, for example, suffer excessive and often disabling concern about potential and real social-evaluative threat. As new and effective therapies for this condition are pursued, there is a simultaneous movement to extend the understanding of this disorder's etiology. In psychiatry, as in the rest of medicine, this development of new treatments often occurs in parallel with increasing sophistication about causes of illness. Advances in one area typically inform and predic

Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) have well-established roles in cognition and social behavior in mammals. Whether or not these roles have been conserved throughout evolution from invertebrate species is less clear. Mammals have eight mGluRs whereas Drosophila has a single DmGluRA, which has both Gi and Gq coupled signaling activity. We have utilized Drosophila to examine the role of DmGluRA in social behavior and various phases of memory. We have found that flies that are homozygous or heterozygous for loss of function mutations of DmGluRA have impaired social behavior in male Drosoph

This is a quantitative, exploratory-descriptive study. It analyzed patients who suffered from Hansen's disease based on social-demographic data, clinic form and time of disease evolution. It identified ocular alterations, relating clinic form to the time of evolution of this illness. The sample was composed of a group 60 patients: 39 were men and 21 were women, 35 were tan, 19 were white and 6 were black. The examination of these patients included eye-lid muscular power, external structures, ocular mobility, cornea sensitiveness, tear production, field and visual accuracy. The clinic form was

The literature on social phobia is reviewed in this article. Social phobia has undergone considerable diagnostic evolution to reach its present form in DSM-IV. Its differential diagnosis includes panic disorder with agoraphobia, avoidant personality disorder, depression, and "shyness." Cross-cultural issues are important to consider because the disorder may manifest differently in different cultures and social settings. It is common, with a lifetime prevalence of 13.3% in the United States according to recent epidemiological studies. Underrecognition of social phobia remains an issue of concer

The evolution of punishment to stabilize cooperation in n-player games has been treated as a second-order social dilemma, where contributions to punishment of free-riders are altruistic. Hence it may only evolve under highly restricted conditions. Here, we build on recent insights using the volunteer's dilemma as an alternative payoff matrix for the evolution of cooperation. The key feature of a volunteer's dilemma is that the benefits of cooperation are a nonlinear function of the number of contributors, meaning that cooperation is negatively frequency dependent. We propose that nonlinear ret

Responding to Ross E. Cheit's Witch-Hunt Narrative, this article is a commentary chronicling the emergence of child sexual abuse as a social issue in Los Angeles County in the 1980s. Based on the responses to child sexual abuse in Los Angeles County as experienced by one social worker during the McMartin years, it discusses the impact of the McMartin case on the identification and intervention in child sexual abuse cases and tracks the evolution and changes that took place in the 1980s and 1990s in Southern California. It offers some insight into a rationale for the denial of child sexual abus

Over 70 years, there have been different narratives of the Holocaust survivors coming to the United States. Survivors' stories begin with an event of major historical significance. Difficulties in conceptualizing historical trauma, along with common distortions and myths about Holocaust survivors and their children are examined. This article proposes that it is impossible to discuss the consequences of extreme suffering without consideration of historical meaning and social context with which they are entwined. The evolution of the social representation of the Holocaust and the contradictions
