Fostering self-advocacy development in service-based self-advocacy groups.

BACKGROUND: While the importance of self-advocacy for those with an intellectual disability is well recognised, little is known about how organisations can support self-advocacy development by implementing self-advocacy groups. METHOD: This inclusive research study collected empirical data from fourteen self-advocates, two managers, three group supporters, and one advocacy coordinator, all experienced and involved in an established not-for-profit service-based self-advocacy group. RESULTS: Our findings identified several benefits of being involved in a self-advocacy group, including confiden

The Social Construction of Transgender Individuals and U.S. Military Policy.

This article aims to apply the social construction of target populations to policy regarding transgender individuals in the U.S. military. After presenting an overview on diversity in the military, parallels were drawn between policy changes regarding the inclusion of openly transgender individuals in the military to those leading up to the inclusion of sexual minorities in the military. This article then details the controversy regarding the inclusion of transgender service members and compares the rationale given for their exclusion from the U.S. military to existing empirical research. A Journey from Low Self-esteem to High Self-worth: Importance of Holistic Education for Children from Marginalised Sections.

Social inclusion is a process through which the marginalised sections of society are included in the mainstream of society. It is ironic that even in the 21st century, many sections of Indian society remain outside the mainstream. Factors such as poverty, ill health, homelessness and abuse are ubiquitous among marginalised children, who are also considered 'at risk' across both developed and developing nations. There is a crucial need for every child to be given the opportunity to be educated. Holistic education is influenced by the progressive educational movement (Dewey 2024, Democracy and e

Social exclusion increases interpersonal distance through need threat: buffering and amplifying roles of social identification and rejection sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Although social exclusion influences interpersonal distance preferences, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. The present study addressed this gap by examining whether exclusion-induced fundamental need threat accounts for the association between social exclusion and interpersonal distance, and whether social identification and rejection sensitivity shape this process among Chinese college students. METHODS: A total of 396 participants reported social identification and rejection sensitivity, and completed measures of interpersonal distance at baseline and

Brain activity associated with social exclusion overlaps with drug-related frontal-striatal circuitry in cocaine users: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to various types of stress can elevate craving for cocaine and hasten relapse among substance dependent individuals. This investigation evaluated the effects of social exclusion on brain activity in cocaine dependent individuals. METHOD: Forty three individuals (18 crack-cocaine users, 25 controls) were recruited from the community to participate in functional neuroimaging study in which they performed a simulated 3 person ball-tossing game (Cyberball). Each participant was told that the other 2 players were in nearby MRI scanners. Task blocks included: Inclusion (likelih

Emotional maltreatment and neglect impact neural activation upon exclusion in early and mid-adolescence: An event-related fMRI study.

Child maltreatment gives rise to atypical patterns of social functioning with peers which might be particularly pronounced in early adolescence when peer influence typically peaks. Yet, few neuroimaging studies in adolescents use peer interaction paradigms to parse neural correlates of distinct maltreatment exposures. This fMRI study examines effects of abuse, neglect, and emotional maltreatment (EM) among 98 youth (n = 58 maltreated; n = 40 matched controls) using an event-related Cyberball paradigm affording assessment of both social exclusion and inclusion across early and mid-adolescence (

Belonging in Reduced-Size Classrooms: Student Outcomes Among Chinese Upper Secondary Students With Intellectual and Other Documented Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: International debates on inclusive education often position reduced-size or specialized classrooms as either supportive provision or potentially segregating placement. Student-perspective evidence remains limited, particularly for upper secondary students with intellectual and other documented disabilities. METHODS: This sequential explanatory mixed-methods study examined associations between reduced-size classroom (RSC) placement and academic and socio-emotional outcomes among 153 upper secondary students with documented disabilities in Wuhan, China. Students were enrolled in RSC

Effectiveness of peer support for people with severe mental health conditions in high-, middle- and low-income countries: multicentre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Some trials have evaluated peer support for people with mental ill health in high-income, mainly English-speaking countries, but the quality of the evidence is weak. AIMS: To investigate the effectiveness of UPSIDES peer support in high-, middle- and low-income countries. METHOD: This pragmatic multicentre parallel-group wait-list randomised controlled trial (registration: ISRCTN26008944) with three measurement points (baseline and 4 and 8 months) took place at six study sites: two in Germany, and one each in Uganda, Tanzania, Israel and India. Understanding peer group perspectives of adolescent acquired brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored how adolescent peer groups perceive social inclusion of students with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABIs). METHODS: Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a framework, an experimental design used vignettes and questionnaires to examine participants' attitudes, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, and behavioral intentions toward two fictional students with an ABI - one displaying internalizing behaviors and the other externalizing behaviors. A total of 263 participants aged 11-13 in a large secondary school in the UK participated. RESULTS: Regressi

Do not ask, but you shall still receive: Newcomer reactions to receiving negative gossip.

As research regarding the targets and initiators of workplace gossip is gaining traction, one perspective that remains overlooked is the gossip receiver. Organizational newcomers are a particularly relevant population to study the impact of receiving negative gossip on because they use social information to navigate an unfamiliar organizational terrain. We propose a parallel moderated mediation model in which receiving negative gossip has contradicting effects on newcomer job anxiety through perceived social inclusion and negative rumination, and agreeableness as a boundary condition of the ef

An Interprofessional Commentary on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Efforts in Allied Health Education.

As allied health professionals are front-line workers and drivers of population health, it is vital that their practice is rooted in and centered on quality care and equitable health for all. In recent years, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) initiatives have multiplied and become more robust, particularly within allied health professions. JEDI initiatives help eliminate health disparities related to social factors like race, class, and gender, largely by creating an allied healthcare workforce that represents the culture and ideology of the patients it serves. However, growing

The psycho-social dual-pathway perspective on healthy aging in digital age-friendly environments: longitudinal evidence from China.

BACKGROUND: Attitudes toward one's own aging are closely related to health and well-being in later life. Meanwhile, digitalization during and after the COVID-19 pandemic has changed older adults' access to services, social participation, and everyday health management. Digital inclusion may support healthy aging, but it may also create burdens when digital use is difficult, stressful, or poorly supported. Yet few studies have examined how aging attitudes and digital inclusion are jointly related to health over time. This study investigated the longitudinal relationships among aging attitudes,

Riding toward inclusion: the journey of adapted cycling.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined how adapted cycles, as a form of assistive technology, support participation in sports and recreational activities for people with disability. Although physical activity is widely recognised for its benefits to physical health, psychological wellbeing, and social connectedness, people with disability continue to face significant barriers to meaningful inclusion in sport and recreation. Adapted cycles offer a means of addressing some of these barriers by enabling individuals to engage in cycling in ways that are responsive to their functional abilities and supp

Under the banyan tree--exclusion and inclusion of people with mental disorders in rural North India.

BACKGROUND: Social exclusion is both cause and consequence of mental disorders. People with mental disorders (PWMD) are among the most socially excluded in all societies yet little is known about their experiences in North India. This qualitative study aims to describe experiences of exclusion and inclusion of PWMD in two rural communities in Uttar Pradesh, India. METHODS: In-depth interviews with 20 PWMD and eight caregivers were carried out in May 2013. Interviews probed experiences of help-seeking, stigma, discrimination, exclusion, participation, agency and inclusion in their households a

The Effects of Brief Social Exclusion on Pain Perception and Pain Memory in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Peer relationship problems are associated with pain complaints; however, experimental data linking the two are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether brief social exclusion influences pain processing in healthy adolescents. METHODS: A total of 40 adolescents were randomly assigned to a social exclusion or social inclusion/control condition; they then completed a cold pressor task and provided pain ratings. Two weeks later, participants provided ratings for their memory for pain during the cold pressor (nanalyzed = 33). RESULTS: Social exclusion had no immediate
