Hepatitis B remains a major global public health challenge. Beyond its clinical burden, hepatitis B-related stigma persists as a multilevel social process embedded within relational and institutional structures. Despite advances in vaccination and antiviral therapy, individuals living with hepatitis B continue to experience psychological distress and social marginalization shaped by stigma. Family systems represent a central relational context in which infection identity is interpreted and negotiated. Through disclosure practices, identity organization, and responses to institutional pressures

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of smoking is decreasing. At the same time, studies suggest that the relative proportion of nicotine dependent smokers is increasing. This may leave us with a smaller, but more problematic group of smokers. Few studies have investigated nicotine dependence in Norway.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected in the Young in Norway Longitudinal Study, where 2,890 respondents were followed up from their early teens until their late 20s. Information was collected on smoking habits, nicotine dependence, education, various indicators of social marginalization, anxiety, d

CONTEXT: Poor social relationships have been associated with increased mortality risk. Configurations of social relationships vary across the life course, affecting the association with mortality. We investigated the relationship between social integration and mortality in four age groups and to examine three blocks of potential intermediate variables.
METHODS: Tromsø Study wave 4 and 6 data and mortality events in the Norwegian Population Registry were linked. A three-level (low, medium, high) social integration index (SII) was constructed from scores to three related items: social participa

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is more common in older adults and those who face structural vulnerabilities, including homelessness. The homeless population is aging in the United States; now, 48% of single homeless adults are 50 and older. We know little about loneliness among older adults who have experienced homelessness. We aimed to describe the loneliness experience among homeless-experienced older adults with cognitive and functional impairments and the individual, social, and structural conditions that shaped these loneliness experiences.
METHODS: We purposively sampled 22 older adults from th

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority women (SMW; women who self-identify as lesbian, queer, etc., as well as heterosexually-identified women who experience attraction to romantic or sexual partnerships with women) and vulnerabilized women (those marginalized due to structural forces such as housing insecurity, violence, sex exchange, drug use, or HIV positive status) experience a range of mental health challenges compared to their heterosexual and general population counterparts. General populations studies show a positive relationship between social support and mental health; less is known about SMW

BACKGROUND: While socioeconomic status (SES) indicators such as educational attainment and employment are among the major drivers of health and illness, the health returns of SES indicators may differ across racial groups. Built on Marginalization related Diminished Returns framework (MDRs) that refers to weaker health effects of SES indicators for marginalized and minoritized groups than non-Hispanic White people, we conducted this study with two aims: First to test the association between educational attainment and employment with cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), and second, to test racial v

BackgroundMale infertility remains critically underresearched, with Black men among the most overlooked populations in research and clinical care. Despite male factors comprising up to 50% of infertility cases, Black men face compounded barriers rooted in intersecting racial and gender marginalization.PurposeThis scoping review systematically examined structural and cultural barriers limiting Black men's access to infertility care in the United States, addressing a critical gap in reproductive health literature.Research DesignFollowing Arksey and O'Malley's framework, we identified peer-review

Family building with donor insemination (DI) is often perceived as stigmatizing and the secrecy surrounding the practice contributes to this perception. In recent years, patient organizations in several countries have started to challenge this stigma and marginalization. This paper reports on a professional group-work approach for couples in Germany using DI. Participants of four seminars with a total of 74 participants and a return rate of 89% were asked to report on their expectations of and experiences during the seminars. Participants were asked to comment on their views and perspectives r

The transgender population generally faces rights violations and discrimination in their day-to-day lives, which was exacerbated during the recent pandemic. This necessitates close scrutiny from an ethics perspective. Following directives from a 2014 Supreme Court judgement, Kerala became the first Indian state to implement a comprehensive policy to enforce the constitutional rights of transgender people. Despite such positive actions, a basic social tendency not to respect gender diversity has led to discrimination and marginalization. This was very evident during the pandemic. In this empiri

Intersectionality has potential to create new ways to describe disparities and craft meaningful solutions. This study aimed to explore Aboriginal carers' experiences of interactions with health, social, and education providers in accessing services and support for their child. Carers of Aboriginal children with a disability were recruited from an Australian metropolitan Aboriginal community-controlled health service. In-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with 19 female carers. Intersectionality was applied as an analytical framework due to the inherent power differentials for Abor

Within the broader context of limited published literature on identity-based marginalization in Majority World communities, research on adolescent experiences of marginalization in a diverse country like India is particularly scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore college-going adolescents' perceptions of commonly marginalized/stigmatized identities, the nature of marginalization, and the contexts within which it occurs using qualitative content analysis. Recruited from across India, participants were ethnolinguistically and religiously diverse late adolescents (across two samples, N

In both public and academic discourse, gaslighting has gained increased attention, especially regarding psychological abuse, power imbalance, and gender-based violence (GBV). However, the term gaslighting is often inconsistently defined and conflated with broader forms of manipulation. It is also largely examined in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV), which ignores its occurrence in other forms of GBV. The present study presents a systematic review that synthesizes interdisciplinary academic literature to create a comprehensive framework of gaslighting. This framework includes the

BACKGROUND: Over 300,000 people in Israel cope with temporary or permanent hair loss (alopecia) that results from diseases and medical treatments. For women, hair loss can be a highly traumatic event that may lead to adverse psychosocial consequences and health outcomes. Nevertheless, this phenomenon has been mostly ignored by health professionals as it is primarily considered an aesthetic-rather than as a health-related issue. Only recently the Healthcare Basket Committee approved financial assistance for the purchase of wigs by patients coping with hair loss. Given the important role that th

India has 46.4 million widows, the highest number globally, with thousands migrating to Vrindavan, the "City of Widows," where they experience systematic social exclusion and marginalization (Loomba Foundation, 2015; Pathak & Tripathi, 2016). This study examines the socio-psychological, cultural, and economic problems faced by widows in Vrindavan through the lens of social death theory (Goffman, 1963; Kastenbaum, 1977). A convergent parallel mixed-methods design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2017) employed structured interviews (N = 258) and qualitative case narratives. Participants were selected v

BACKGROUND: Oil is the mainstay revenue for a number of African countries. However, extraction can result in multiple impacts on the health and wellbeing of communities living in oil-rich areas. This review explored evidence of oil industry-related social exclusion on community health and wellbeing on the African continent.
METHODS: We used a systematic approach guided by PRISMA to search six databases for empirical and descriptive sources focused on oil industry impacts, in any African country, between 1960 to 2021. Findings were grouped according to four dimensions of the Social Exclusion K

Afghan refugees face persistent poverty, social marginalization, and restricted access to healthcare in Pakistan, making them one of the world's largest and longest-displaced groups. Health disparities have been made worse by decades of instability, especially among marginalized groups living in informal urban settlements and refugee camps. With an emphasis on how income, education, and legal status affect health outcomes and healthcare access, this study explores the socioeconomic determinants and health burdens among Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan. Between January and June 2025, 250 Af

Dental caries and periodontal disease represent a health problem and a social cost for the entire population, and in particular for socio-economically disadvantaged individuals who are less resistant to disease. The aim of this review is to estimate the prevalence and severity of the two dental pathologies, caries and periodontal disease, in the different classes of socio-economically disadvantaged subjects and to understand which of them are most affected. A systematic search of the literature was performed in MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE and Web of Science after establishing a suitable searc

This study examines Turkish Deaf adults' identity construction through interpretative phenomenological analysis. Seven Deaf parents (mean age = 59.14; 3 women, 4 men) with hearing children participated in semi-structured interviews conducted in Turkish Sign Language. Drawing on Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory, the findings show that participants construct identity through a tripartite social categorization: Deaf people (sign language users), hearing individuals, and those using medical devices. Participants reject disability labels and position themselves as cultural-ling
