Eating disorders: when social rank perceptions are shaped by early shame experiences.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has shown that early adverse experiences can be an important risk factor for eating disorders. However, the role of early shame memories and how they are structured as traumatic and central memories to self-identity in eating disorders has never been investigated. This study explores the phenomenology of shame memories involving attachment figures and other agents from the wider social domain in patients with eating disorders, and examines the relationship between their traumatic and centrality features, social comparison based on physical appearance, and the severi

Social service professionals' perceptions of nonoffending caregivers in child sexual abuse cases.

This study was designed to assess social service workers' perceptions of nonoffending caregivers in cases of child sexual abuse. Attributions of blame were examined by administering questionnaires to staff at local social service agencies. It was hypothesized that social service workers who worked in the field longer, were male, or had less education would attribute more blame to the nonoffending caregivers. The findings revealed that respondent gender was the only significant predictor of blame attribution toward nonoffending caregivers, with level of education approaching significance as a p

Is GP-patient communication related to their perceptions of illness severity, coping and social support?

The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between the communicative behaviour of general practitioner and patient on the one hand and the perception of the coping behaviour of the patient, the severity of the complaint and the presence of social support on the other hand. From 20 general practitioners (GP), 15 consultations per GP were videotaped and analysed using the Roter Interaction Analysis System. Doctors and patients rated their perceptions on questionnaires. The finding was that doctors and patients used predominantly task-oriented (instrumental) behaviour, with some excepti

Homework compliance, perceptions of control, and outcome of cognitive-behavioral treatment of social phobia.

This study examined the relationship of compliance with homework assignments and posttreatment anxiety in patients who received cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social phobia. Greater homework compliance measured in the first and latter periods of CBGT was associated with lower levels of social interactional anxiety after treatment. Surprisingly, homework compliance during the middle sessions of CBGT was positively related to posttreatment fears of scrutiny and criticism. Perceptions of control in social phobia and their potential effect on homework compliance and the homework com

Expanding the social pathways linking self-perceptions of aging to health: the role of friendships.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigates how friendships serve as a social pathway underlying the health effects of self-perceptions of aging (SPA). We adopt a conceptual framework integrating stereotype embodiment theory and the differential investment of resources (DIRe) model. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), which tracks a nationally representative sample of 9,098 participants aged 50 and older over 8 years (Time 1: 2008/10, Time 2: 2012/14, Time 3: 2016/18). We examined the direct and indirect effects of

Inside the funhouse mirror factory: How social media distorts perceptions of norms.

The current paper explains how modern technology interacts with human psychology to create a funhouse mirror version of social norms. We argue that norms generated on social media often tend to be more extreme than offline norms which can create false perceptions of norms-known as pluralistic ignorance. We integrate research from political science, psychology, and cognitive science to explain how online environments become saturated with false norms, who is misrepresented online, what happens when online norms deviate from offline norms, where people are affected online, and why expressions ar

The Medium is the Message: Effects of Mediums of Communication on Perceptions and Emotions in Social Anxiety Disorder.

We examined the use of voice/text and visual mediums and their effects on perceptions and emotions in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Our sample included 88 individuals: 44 individuals with SAD and 44 non-socially-anxious (NSA) individuals. We used an experience sampling methodology (ESM) in which participants received daily links to online measures at random times during the day, for 21 days and reported on social interactions, emotions and perceptions. Results indicated that individuals with SAD used voice/text mediums to a greater extent and used visual mediums to a lesser extent compared to

Pharmacists' Attitudes to and Perceptions of Pseudoscience: How Pseudoscience Operates in Health and Social Communication.

Given the expansion of pseudoscience, there is a need to understand its mechanisms of diffusion. Our aim was to evaluate how pseudoscience operates among pharmacists. We performed 29 semi-structured interviews to assess the stance of pharmacists regarding pseudoscience. Interview data were analyzed qualitatively to seek common themes. Our results indicate that although pharmacists were broadly opposed to more extreme pseudoscientific practices, some attitudes were detected that may contribute to pseudoscience acceptance. We identified some of the processes by means of which pseudoscience bound

The social competence of very-low-birthweight children: teacher, peer, and self-perceptions.

Whether very-low birthweight (VLBW less than or equal to 1500 gm) children differ from normal birthweight (NBW greater than 2500 gm) children with respect to social (as opposed to intellectual) competence has been a relatively neglected issue. The social competence at school age of 183 VLBW children was therefore compared with that of 183 NBW children born at the same hospital matched for age, gender, social class, parity, and maternal age. A multi-informant, multidefinitional approach to social competence was adopted involving teacher, (same-gender) peer, and self-ratings of the 366 children'

Social comfort and attractiveness perception: impact of prosthetics, physical disability and comfort distance on interpersonal interactions.

Derived from the disease-avoidance model is the hypothesis that people may direct negative cognitive and behavioural responses towards individuals with physical disfiguring conditions, including physical disabilities. According to the behavioral immune system, physical disability-a non-contagious physical disfigurement-may falsely activate cognitive disease-avoidance processes, resulting in prejudicial or negative responses toward individuals with physical disabilities. For the first time this hypothesis is put to the test by investigating whether ratings of attractiveness and comfort for a so

From threat perception to behavioral decision: A computational framework for understanding approach-avoidance in social anxiety.

Cognitive models of social anxiety disorder describe what people find threatening and what sustains those appraisals, but say less about the step at which an appraisal becomes a decision to approach or avoid. This review organizes evidence around a decision process with three components. Valuation weighs anticipated social threat against anticipated social reward, with perceived controllability proposed to set the balance. Policy converts the resulting value into an action. Learning revises value estimates from outcomes and, separately, governs the rate at which a perturbed affective state ret

Risk perception of falls on the same level at workplaces among social welfare workers in Japan.

Falls on the same level (FSLs) are a major cause of occupational injuries in the social welfare industry, especially in aging societies. Here, we conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate how social welfare workers perceive the risk of occupational accidents, with a focus on FSLs, and to examine the effects of age on risk perception. Respondents (n=294) rated their estimated likelihood of experiencing five major types of occupational accidents across six levels of injury severity. The results indicated that the FSL risk was not consistently underestimated relative to other accident types
