Factors Affecting Breast Self-examination Behavior Among Female Healthcare Workers in Iran: The Role of Social Support Theory.

OBJECTIVES: In women, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death. Screening tests are the basis for early diagnosis. In Iranian women, the mortality rate of breast cancer is high due to insufficient screening examinations and delayed visits for care. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors affecting breast self-examinations among Iranian women employed in medical careers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 501 women working in the medical professions at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in western Iran in 2018. The subjects were s

Social cognitive theory-based intervention to promote physical activity among prediabetic rural people: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The present randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluated the effectiveness of a theory-based physical activity (PA) intervention for rural patients with prediabetes. It was hypothesized that a PA intervention program based on the social cognitive theory (SCT) will modify fasting blood sugar (FBS) among rural people with prediabetes, which in turn will result in a decrease in diabetes incidence in the rural area. METHODS: A cluster RCT on prediabetic people was conducted in Ahar, East Azerbaijan Province, Iran. A PA intervention in prediabetes was performed over 16 weeks of follow-u

High agreement was obtained across scores from multiple equated scales for social anxiety disorder using item response theory.

OBJECTIVES: There is no standardized approach to the measurement of social anxiety. Researchers and clinicians are faced with numerous self-report scales with varying strengths, weaknesses, and psychometric properties. The lack of standardization makes it difficult to compare scores across populations that use different scales. Item response theory offers one solution to this problem via equating different scales using an anchor scale to set a standardized metric. This study is the first to equate several scales for social anxiety disorder. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Data from two samples (n =

A Health Belief Model-Social Learning Theory approach to adolescents' fertility control: findings from a controlled field trial.

We evaluated an 8- to 12-hour Health Belief Model-Social Learning Theory (HBM-SLT)-based sex education program against several community- and school-based interventions in a controlled field experiment. Data on sexual and contraceptive behavior were collected from 1,444 adolescents unselected for gender, race/ethnicity, or virginity status in a pretest-posttest design. Over 60% completed the one-year follow-up. Multivariate analyses were conducted separately for each preintervention virginity status by gender grouping. The results revealed differential program impacts. First, for preinterventi

Delineating the Concept of eHealth Self-Management for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Concept Analysis in the Context of the Social Cognitive Theory.

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a major health issue worldwide, characterized by a significant disease burden that leads to disability and reduced quality of life. Its prevalence is increasing, particularly among the aging population. Research is needed to provide effective, individualized, and theory-based eHealth self-management interventions to improve clinical outcomes, and access to care. There is a lack of consensus in the literature on the concept of eHealth self-management support for chronic musculoskeletal pain. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to conduct a concept an

Research and Development of a Social Cognitive Theory-based Mobile Application to Enhance Physical Activity in Aging Workforce With Hypertension.

This study addressed the unique challenges of promoting physical activity among older adults with chronic diseases in the informal workforce, who often face physical limitations and lack structured schedules or access to workplace wellness programs. To address this gap, a mobile application based on Social Cognitive Theory was developed to encourage physical activity among older adults with hypertension. Guided by the ADDIE model, the app's development included a needs assessment involving a survey of 90 individuals and a literature review. This informed the design of key features, such as edu

Civil society perspectives on tuberculosis care for people living with HIV in Brazil: A study informed by Social Representations Theory.

In Brazil, tuberculosis-human immunodeficiency virus (TB-HIV) coinfection remains a major public health challenge despite advances in antiretroviral therapy and tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) Civil society has historically contributed to HIV responses, but little is known about how it perceives TB care for people living with HIV (PLHIV). This study examined how organized civil society perceives and represents TB care for PLHIV. We conducted a qualitative study guided by Social Representations Theory, with five focus groups involving 37 representatives from civil society organizations

Executive function predicts theory of mind but not social verbal communication in school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: The association between Executive Function (EF) and Theory of Mind (ToM) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been mainly investigated using false belief tasks, whilst less is known about the EF effect on other ToM facets. Furthermore, the role EF plays in social communication in ASD is mainly assessed using parent-report EF ratings rather than direct assessment. AIMS: The aim of this study was to shed more light on the effect of performance-based EF measures on ToM and social communication in middle childhood in ASD relative to neurotypical controls. Multiple Disadvantage and Social Networks: Toward an Integrated Theory of Health Care Use During Reentry From Criminal Justice Settings.

Research consistently finds the disproportionate negative health impact of the criminal justice system on racial and ethnic minorities. Yet less is known about the underlying mechanisms of health care utilization during community reintegration. We contribute to the literature theoretically by integrating two perspectives: network theory of social capital and multiple disadvantage hypothesis and providing a more nuanced explanation of health service use during reentry. We identify incarceration history as a unique disadvantaged status that precludes people from accessing social networks and soc

Interprofessional education in palliative care: a theory-informed evaluation of a storyline-based curriculum for health and social care students.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) in palliative care is essential for fostering collaborative, patient-centred practice. However, existing programs often underrepresent non-medical professions and insufficiently address spiritual care, ethical reflection, and experiential learning, despite the relevance of these aspects to comprehensive, holistic palliative care. This study evaluates an innovative interprofessional curriculum integrating the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) framework, Social Identity Theory (SIT), and Transformative Learning Theory (TLT), desi

Hypertension among incarcerated individuals in the Ashanti Region of Ghana: examining prevalence and correlates based on the Social Cognitive Theory.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension remains a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In Ghana, evidence indicates a rising prevalence across adult populations, yet little is known about the situation within prisons, where structural, behavioural, and environmental factors may increase vulnerability. This study, therefore, examined the prevalence of hypertension and its correlates among incarcerated individuals in six prison facilities within the Ashanti Region of Ghana, using the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 382 incarce

A study of vulnerable student populations, exclusion and marginalization in Sierra Leonean secondary schools: a social justice theory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone faces challenges in ensuring equitable and inclusive education for all its citizens. Certain groups, including pregnant students, student mothers, students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, and those without family support, are particularly vulnerable to exclusion and marginalisation. These groups are identified as vulnerable based on criteria established by organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which highlight the interplay between health, socio-economic statu

A qualitative study of the family caregiver burden for caregivers of children with congenital cataracts from a social ecosystem theory perspective.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataracts are one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in children, and treatment and rehabilitation are highly dependent on family caregivers. However, research on the caregiver burden experience for children with congenital cataracts in China is limited. In particular, a systematic exploration from the perspective of social ecosystem theory is lacking. This study aimed to gain insight into the burden on family caregivers of children with congenital cataracts in China and to provide a theoretical basis for the development of systematic intervention s

Exploring the Factors Related to Medication Adherence in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis Based on Social Cognitive Theory: A Path Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that poor medication adherence is common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the related factors and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Through theory-based research, the mechanism of medication adherence in RA patients can be better explored and clarified, providing reference for clinical intervention. AIM: To explore the mediating role of medication self-efficacy between perceived barriers, pharmacologic treatment expectations, social support and medication adherence in patients with RA based on the social cognitive theory. METHODS: A tota

Developing an initial programme theory for a model of social care in prisons and on release (empowered together): A realist synthesis approach.

Many people are living in prison with a range of social care needs, for example, requiring support with washing, eating, getting around safely, and/or maintaining relationships. However, social care for this vulnerable group is generally inadequate. There is uncertainty and confusion about who is legally responsible for this and how it can best be provided, and a lack of integration with healthcare. We used realist-informed approaches to develop an initial programme theory (IPT) for identifying/assessing social care needs of, and providing care to, male adults in prison and on release. IPT dev

Contrasting social knowledge and theory of mind patterns in adults with personality disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and healthy controls.

INTRODUCTION: Personality disorders (PD) and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are distinct conditions displaying common symptoms, like impairments in social cognition, that make them hard to distinguish, especially in severe cases. To date, few studies have compared theory of mind skills in these two disorders, and none have compared social knowledge skills. This study aims to compare the social cognitive abilities of patients with these conditions. METHOD: Non-parametric analyses of covariance were used to compare severe PD patients (n = 37), SSD patients (n = 44), and healthy controls

The Role of Social Capital in Predicting Tourists' Waste Sorting Intentions in Rural Destinations: Extending the Theory of Planned Behavior.

Improper waste disposal of tourists has detrimental impacts on the environment, economy, and people in rural destinations. Separating at the source is an effective means to mitigate these adverse impacts on rural destinations. Hence, identifying factors influencing tourists' waste sorting intentions in rural destinations is critical to the sustainability of rural tourism and rural land. However, few studies focus on tourists' waste sorting intentions. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and social capital, this research examined the determinants of tourists' waste sorting intention

Social cognition and trust: Exploring the role of theory of mind and hostile attribution bias in children's skepticism of inaccurate informants.

A growing body of research has examined the role of individual differences in children's selective trust. The current study was designed to explore how individual differences in theory of mind and hostile attribution bias affect children's trust. Four- and five-year-old children took part in a standard selective trust paradigm in which they had the choice between a previously inaccurate informant and an unfamiliar informant. They were also asked to interpret why the previously inaccurate informant had provided incorrect information in the past. Finally, children completed a hostile attribution

A theory based evaluation of an intervention to promote positive health behaviors and reduce social isolation in people experiencing homelessness.

Homelessness adversely affects an individual's ability to access healthcare, opportunities for social interaction and recreational activities such as physical activity. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a community-based physical activity and peer support intervention on the health and wellbeing of homeless participants. This study employed semi-structured interviews to investigate the perceived impact of the Street Fit Scotland intervention on the health and wellbeing of 10 homeless adults. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. A thematic analysis was conducted. Pa
