Bending gender, ending gender: theoretical foundations for social work practice with the transgender community.

Gender is a ubiquitous social construct that wields power over every individual in our society. The traditional dichotomous gender paradigm is oppressive, especially for transgendered people whose sense of themselves as gendered people is incongruent with the gender they were assigned at birth. Transgendered individuals are targeted for mistreatment when others attempt to enforce conventional gender boundaries. This article discusses gender-based oppression and the resulting psychosocial difficulties experienced by many transgendered individuals. The discussion advances a critical analysis of

Relationship between occupation, social class and time taken off work following a whiplash injury.

INTRODUCTION: Little has been published about occupational and social factors in relation to time off work following a whiplash injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed 800 medicolegal case sheets from a consultant orthopaedic surgeon's practice. RESULTS: Of those injured, 596 were working and 204 were unemployed or retired. The working group was further analysed. Severity of injury was estimated by analysing velocity of injury combined with vehicular damage. Mean time off work for a minor injury was 10.6 days, moderate 12.1 days, severe 13.8, and very severe 24.9 (P < 0.05). Looking at wor

Return to work following injury: the role of economic, social, and job-related factors.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined factors influencing return to work (RTW) following severe fracture to a lower extremity. METHODS: This prospective cohort study followed 312 individuals treated for a lower extremity fracture at 3 level-1 trauma centers. Kaplan-Meier estimates of the proportion of RTW were computed, and a Cox proportional hazards model was used to examine the contribution of multiple risk factors on RTW. RESULTS: Cumulative proportions of RTW at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months post-injury were 0.26, 0.49, 0.60, and 0.72. After accounting for the extent of impairment, characteristics of

Factors influencing adjustment of patients suffering from nasopharynx carcinoma--implications for oncology social work.

A longitudinal study has been conducted in Hong Kong to identify important factors that affect short-term adjustment of patients suffering from nasopharynx carcinoma (NPC). A total of 125 newly diagnosed NPC patients were interviewed in the diagnostic phase, the number dropping to 119 in the treatment phase, and 111 in the post-treatment phase. Data were gathered by a pre-tested structured measuring instrument via face-to-face interviews. Those patients with poor adjustment in each phase of the illness were found to have higher perceived stress; they tended to interpret their illness as more t

Health, health-promoting resources, and lifestyle factors among final-semester students in nursing, healthcare, and social work programs, and newly graduated nurses and healthcare and social work professionals - a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Health promotion in higher education may support sustainable health among future healthcare and social work professionals, who face elevated risk of poor health when entering working life. The aim of this study was to describe associations between general health, health-promoting resources, lifestyle factors, and social factors among final-semester students in nursing, healthcare, and social work programs and newly graduated nurses and healthcare and social work professionals. In addition, the study compared groups reporting excellent/very good general health with those reporting g

Sex Work Stigma as a Partial Mediator Between Social Support and Depressive Symptoms Among Vulnerable Women Engaged in Sex Work in Southern Uganda.

Mental health is a significant challenge among women engaged in sex work (WESW), especially in low-resource settings. This study examined the mediating role of family-level and community-level sex work stigma, which is intrinsically linked to HIV, on the relationship between social support and depressive symptoms among WESW. We analyzed baseline data from the Kyaterekera study (R01MH116768), a cluster-randomized trial implemented in southern Uganda, which recruited 542 WESW aged 18-58 years. We applied a structural equation model to examine the hypothesized mediation pathway. Perceived social

Loneliness, social support, social isolation and wellbeing among working age adults with and without disability: Cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is significantly related to health and wellbeing. However, there is little information on the prevalence of loneliness among people with disability or the association between disability, loneliness and wellbeing. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: For a nationally representative sample of adults (age 16-64) with/without disability, to examine exposure to three indicators of low social connectedness (loneliness, low perceived social support, social isolation), and to evaluate the association between low social connectedness and wellbeing. To test whether disability status moderated t

Creative entrepreneurship as a socially embedded form of work: a sociological ecology for the platform society.

Creative entrepreneurship increasingly combines creative production with entrepreneurial, communicative, and platform-mediated work. Existing scholarship has generated important insights into opportunity recognition, innovation, value creation, and creative labor, but these perspectives often examine entrepreneurial activity, social relations, cultural recognition, and platform governance as analytically separate processes. This Perspective develops the Sociological Ecology of Creative Entrepreneurship (SECE), a conceptual framework that positions creative entrepreneurship as socially embedded

Psychological Distress and Social Adjustment of a Working Adult Population with Single-Sided Deafness.

Background: Hearing loss is a highly prevalent condition in the world population that determines emotional, social, and economic costs. In recent years, it has been definitely recognized that the lack of physiological binaural hearing causes alterations in the localization of sounds and reduced speech recognition in noise and reverberation. This study aims to explore the psycho-social profile of adult workers affected by single-sided deafness (SSD), without other major medical conditions and otological symptoms, through comparison to subjects with normal hearing. Methods: This is a cross-secti

Outcomes of an Interprofessional Opioid Training Program for Graduate Students in Nursing and Social Work.

Social workers and other behavioral health professionals trained to provide prevention, treatment, and recovery services for opioid use disorders (OUD) remain urgently needed in the U.S. particularly in states with widespread health professional shortage areas. To help mitigate this workforce gap, faculty in social work and nursing at a public university in Alabama developed and piloted an innovative HRSA-funded interprofessional traineeship to prepare graduate-level nursing and social work students to assess and treat opioid use disorders (OUD). The yearlong traineeship included specialized c

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Social Work: Evidence for Impact?

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (hereafter CRPD) has provided a radical imperative for the reform of mental health and capacity legislation around the world. The interpretation of the CRPD has been controversial, ranging from the complete abolition of detention, forcible treatment, and substitute decision-making to accepting that elements of these measures need to be retained based on non-discriminatory criteria, additional safeguards, and a comprehensive shift towards supported decision-making. While the potential effects of the CRPD on mental health s

A scoping review of personalisation in the UK: approaches to social work and people with learning disabilities.

There have been rapid developments in personalisation of health and social care in the UK over the past 5 years to develop a more flexible model of provision based upon greater choice and control for service users. This has been important for people with learning disabilities who are often dependent on others such as social workers to support their autonomy and independence. This article discusses a study carried out to explore the impact of personalisation on people with learning disabilities and the role of social workers to support this. A scoping review of the UK literature from 1996 to 20

Tuberculosis peer educators: personal experiences of working with socially excluded communities in London.

SETTING: Peer education is a relatively unexplored intervention for tuberculosis (TB) control, particularly among socially excluded communities. In London, peer educators are used to raise awareness of TB and promote uptake of radiological screening among people using homeless and/or drug and alcohol treatment services. OBJECTIVE: To understand the motivation and personal impact of being a peer educator on people with experience of anti-tuberculosis treatment, homelessness and addiction. DESIGN: In-depth semi-structured interviews with peer educators were recorded and transcribed, and then a

Financial socialization of first-year college students: the roles of parents, work, and education.

This cross-sectional study tests a conceptual financial socialization process model, specifying four-levels that connect anticipatory socialization during adolescence to young adults' current financial learning, to their financial attitudes, and to their financial behavior. A total of 2,098 first-year college students (61.9% females) participated in the survey, representing a diverse ethnic group (32.6% minority participation: Hispanic 14.9%, Asian/Asian American 9%, Black 3.4%, Native American 1.8% and other 3.5%). The Paradox of Productive Aging: Social Work Practice Between Inclusion and Inequality in South Korea.

This article explores how productive ageing programmes both support and constrain older adults in a low-income Seoul community. Based on three years of participant observation and 62 interviews, it shows how welfare organizations and frontline social workers translate policy through performance pressures, capacity-based expectations, and responsibilization. I describe this tension as the Productive Ageing Governance Paradox (PAGP). While these programmes offer material and relational resources, they may also produce stigma, unequal participation, and withdrawal. The findings highlight the cont
