Assessment of associated factors for the need of health care social worker intervention in emergency departments patients.

Social vulnerability is frequently overlooked in emergency departments, where acute medical priorities may overshadow patients' social needs. We evaluated the AP-HP Early Social Frailty Identification Questionnaire in 343 consecutive adult emergency department patients. Fifty patients (15%) met criteria for hospital social worker intervention, compared with only two referrals through routine clinical practice. Housing instability, social isolation, and financial insecurity were the most frequent needs identified. Male sex and higher triage acuity were independently associated with referral. Th

The ties that bind: migrant worker social networks, mental health, loneliness and self-rated health.

AIMS: Migrant domestic workers (MDWs) are separated from family and at-home support networks while working abroad. This may affect their mental health due to stressors, social isolation and loneliness. Evidence shows mixed results on whether social capital and social support enhance MDWs' mental health, warranting further investigation. This study assessed how positive and negative dimensions of social network capital are associated with mental health, loneliness and self-rated health among MDWs in Macao SAR, China. METHODS: Using respondent-driven sampling, 1,681 MDWs (Filipino n = 1329; Ind

Psychosocial risks and mental health of health and social care workers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Certainly, our perception of the world we live in has changed since COVID-19 irrupted in our lives in March 2020. Many of our certainties in the European continent were shaked by the unequivocal evidence of our vulnerability as individuals and our lack of preparedness as a society to manage a health emergency of unknown boundaries, despite having one of the most well-developed health systems across the globe. Much has been said about COVID-19, but never as I can remember, so much has been said about workers, and occupational safety and health, for once, hit the headlines. Healthcare workers -

Patient and staff perceptions of social worker counseling before surgical therapy for head and neck cancer.

Patients who undergo surgical therapy for head and neck cancer often face a tremendous challenge involving considerable psychological distress and impaired social functioning. These difficulties are often compounded by logistical difficulties such as transportation, financial assistance, and continuity of care after the acute hospitalization. Social workers have a unique opportunity to address the psychosocial and logistical issues facing these patients through preadmission counseling and coordination. The study reported in this article aimed to assess the effect of preadmission counseling for

Experiences with pregnancy of adolescents with disabilities from the perspectives of the school social workers who serve them.

Adolescents with disabilities are more likely than adolescents without disabilities to become pregnant, although very little is known about the lived contexts of their sexual and pregnancy experiences. Such youths are often deprived of sexual health information across a range of potential sources, although school social workers are in a unique position to provide them services. Thirteen school social workers working primarily with adolescents with disabilities were interviewed using a phenomenological study design to offer their perspectives concerning the sexual and pregnancy experiences of s

Medical, demographical and social aspects of syphilis: the case of infected sex workers in Greece during Interwar.

The aim of this research is to present syphilis among women described as "indecent" according to the records of the Venereal Diseases Hospital "Andreas Syggros", which is located in Athens, during the period 1931-1935. In impoverished Greece of the Interwar period, factors such as criminal ignorance, or lack of information on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) along with inadequate health controls of sex workers, resulted in a dramatic spread of syphilis, whereas "Andreas Syggros" hospital accommodated thousands of patients. The inflow of 1.300.000 Greek refugees from Asia Minor, after the G

Social workers' knowledge and perceptions of effectiveness and acceptability of medication assisted treatment of substance use disorders.

Data from a national study of 345 privately funded, community-based substance use disorder (SUD) treatment centers were used to investigate social workers' knowledge, perceptions of effectiveness, and perceptions of the acceptability of medication assisted treatments (MATs) for SUDs. Results reveal the importance of exposure to MATs for social workers to develop a knowledge base regarding the effectiveness of various pharmacological agents. Results also underline the importance of social workers' perceptions of effectiveness in forming opinions regarding the acceptability of the use of MATs in

Social and economic consequences of workplace injury: a population-based study of workers in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Existing research suggests that workplace injuries can have significant economic and social consequences for workers; but there are no quantitative studies on complete populations. METHODS: The British Columbia Linked Health Database (BCLHD) was used to examine 1994 injured workers who lost work time due to the injury (LT) and a group of injured individuals who did not lose time after their injuries (NLT). Three outcomes were explored: (1) residential change, (2) marital instability, and (3) social assistance use. Logistic regression adjusted for several individual and injury char

Social Integration as Mediator and Age as Moderator in Social Capital Affecting Mental Health of Internal Migrant Workers: A Multi-Group Structural Equation Modeling Approach.

The rise of migrant workers has been a unique social phenomenon as China goes through industrialization, urbanization, and modernization. They are a special social group formed during the economic and social transition of the country. Migration of rural labor has pushed China on its new path toward industrialization and urbanization. Because of the urban-rural dual system of the country, however, it is difficult for migrant workers to be fully integrated into host cities, making them susceptible to negative emotions and mental health issues. Therefore, their mental health is an issue of great

The effects of social networks on HIV risk behaviors among Vietnamese female sex workers: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) experience heightened vulnerability to HIV and other health harms, and cross-border FSWs face additional challenges due to language issues, higher mobility, and weaker negotiation skills. Given the critical role of social network factors in HIV transmission, it is imperative to explore the social network characteristics of Vietnamese cross-border FSWs in China to enhance AIDS prevention and control. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 Vietnamese FSWs in Hekou County, Yunnan Province from May to July 2018. The samples were selected u

Changing social contact patterns among US workers during the COVID-19 pandemic: April 2020 to December 2021.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions minimize social contacts, hence the spread of respiratory pathogens such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Globally, there is a paucity of social contact data from the workforce. In this study, we quantified two-day contact patterns among USA employees. Contacts were defined as face-to-face conversations, involving physical touch or proximity to another individual and were collected using electronic self-kept diaries. Data were collected over 4 rounds from 2020 to 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mean (standard deviation) contacts reported by 1456 participants wer

"I Have Failed Them and Failed My Duties": Experiences of Hospital Social Workers Discharging Patients into Homelessness.

Homelessness is a long-standing issue at the forefront of healthcare globally, and discharge of homeless patients from hospital settings can exacerbate gaps and burdens in healthcare systems. In hospitals, social workers often take on the majority of responsibility for facilitating patient discharge transitions out of hospital care. Research in this area to date has explored experiences and outcomes of homeless clients, and the experiences of social workers in these roles are not well known. The current study's objective was to elucidate observations and experiences of hospital social workers
