Low temperature triggers sociality in a facultatively social bee.

The evolutionary transition to eusociality in the solitary ancestors of social insects, like ants, termites, wasps and bees, may have been initiated by an environmental induction of group living. Plasticity in social behaviour in response to the environment can be found in facultatively social insects. However, it is currently unknown which environmental cues trigger the individual decision of an insect to nest solitarily or socially. Such environmental cues could be identified by exposing individuals of a facultatively social insect to experimentally manipulated cues in a controlled environme

Role of social capital on edentulism, social participation and cognition.

OBJECTIVES: The role of social factors in the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study investigates whether social participation mediates the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function, and whether contextual social capital moderates these associations among older Chinese adults. METHODS: Data from 7796 Chinese adults aged ≥65 was obtained from the 2017-18 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Tooth loss was self-reported and cognitive function was measured using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental

Social anxiety and alcohol consumption: The role of social context.

Research has identified social anxiety as a risk factor for the development of alcohol use disorder. However, studies have produced equivocal findings regarding the relationship between social anxiety and drinking behaviors in authentic drinking environments. This study examined how social-contextual features of real-world drinking contexts might influence the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption in everyday settings. At an initial laboratory visit, heavy social drinkers (N = 48) completed the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale. Participants were then outfitted with a transd

A neurobiological perspective on social influence: Serotonin and social adaptation.

Humans are inherently social beings. Being suggestible to each other's expectations enables pro-social skills that are crucial for social learning and adaptation. Despite their high relevance for psychiatry, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying social adaptation are still not well understood. This review, therefore, provides a conceptual framework covering various distinct mechanisms underlying social adaptation and explores the neuropharmacology - in particular the role of the serotonin (5-HT) system - in modulating these mechanisms. This article reviews empirical results on social influ

Social Anxiety Disorder and Social Support Behavior in Friendships.

Relationship quality is a strong predictor of health outcomes, and individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) report increased interpersonal impairment. However, there are few studies testing the effect of SAD on friendships and it is thus unclear whether there are behavioral differences that distinguish friendships in which a target individual has SAD from friendships in which the target individual does not have SAD. We tested for differences in the provision and receipt of support behaviors as a function of having a SAD diagnosis and accounting for comorbid depressive symptoms. Participa

The influences of virtual social feedback on social anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Social feedback in the virtual environment is a critical part of successful virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), and identifying the influences of virtual social feedback on social anxiety patients is necessary. AIMS: The present study aimed to explore the influences of ambiguous and negative virtual social feedback on social anxiety patients and a health control group (HCG). METHOD: Twenty-six social anxiety patients and 26 healthy participants were recruited. All participants were exposed to a virtual public speaking scenario. The participants were required to make two 3-mi

Transgender Adolescents' Uses of Social Media for Social Support.

PURPOSE: Transgender adolescents are at higher risk for negative mental health outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality, compared with cisgender adolescents. Social media may be an effective venue for addressing these health disparities because most adolescents have access to online information and socialization. This study used qualitative inquiry to explore transgender adolescents' uses of social media for social support. METHODS: Transgender adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18 years with a social media profile were recruited from a pediatric gender clinic in the Midwest

Social anxiety and social norms in individualistic and collectivistic countries.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is assumed to be related to cultural norms across countries. Heinrichs et al. [2006: Behav Res Ther 44:1187-1197] compared individualistic and collectivistic countries and found higher social anxiety and more positive attitudes toward socially avoidant behaviors in collectivistic rather than in individualistic countries. However, the authors failed to include Latin American countries in the collectivistic group. METHODS: To provide support for these earlier results within an extended sample of collectivistic countries, 478 undergraduate students from individualistic

Cultural aspects in social anxiety and social anxiety disorder.

To examine cultural aspects in social anxiety and social anxiety disorder (SAD), we reviewed the literature on the prevalence rates, expressions, and treatments of social anxiety/SAD as they relate to culture, race, and ethnicity. We further reviewed factors that contribute to the differences in social anxiety/SAD between different cultures, including individualism/collectivism, perception of social norms, self-construal, gender roles, and gender role identification. Our review suggests that the prevalence and expression of social anxiety/SAD depends on the particular culture. Asian cultures t

[An examination of the determinants of social withdrawal and affinity for social withdrawal].

This study examined the determinants of social withdrawal using data from a survey by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office for Youth Affairs and Public Safety (2008). In addition, this study identified young people who showed an affinity for social withdrawal although they were not in a state of withdrawal, and examined the determinants of an affinity for social withdrawal. The results of stepwise discriminant analysis showed that factors such as social phobia, depression, violence, and emotional bonds with family differentiated between the general youth group and the social withdrawal gro

Gender differences in social support for socially anxious individuals.

Given that social anxiety disorder is a common, chronic, debilitating disorder and socially anxious women appear to have different experiences related to social development and social support than men, it is essential that the gender differences in social anxiety and social support be understood. The present study examined perceived social support quantity and satisfaction in 23 women and 28 men seeking treatment for social anxiety disorder. Contrary to expectations, men and women did not differ on measures of social support. However, younger, unmarried women reported having smaller social sup

Cultural differences in perceived social norms and social anxiety.

Cultural considerations in social anxiety are a rarely investigated topic although it seems likely that differences between countries in social norms may relate to the extent of social anxiety. The present study investigated individuals' personal and perceived cultural norms and their relation to social anxiety and fear of blushing. A total of 909 participants from eight countries completed vignettes describing social situations and evaluated the social acceptability of the behavior of the main actor both from their own, personal perspective as well as from a cultural viewpoint. Self-focused attention in social phobia and social anxiety.

Self-focused attention is an awareness of self-referent information and is present in many emotional disorders. This review concentrates on the role of self-focused attention in social anxiety with particular reference to the Clark and Wells [Clark, D. M., & Wells, A. (1995). Benzodiazepines and anticonvulsants for social phobia (social anxiety disorder).

Both benzodiazepines and conventional anticonvulsants have been evaluated as treatments for social phobia (social anxiety disorder). Among the benzodiazepines, clonazepam is the best studied, although there is reason to expect that all benzodiazepine anxiolytics would be effective for this condition. Among the anticonvulsants, gabapentin and pregabalin, an analogue of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), have been shown to be more effective than placebo in double-blind studies. Other than a small negative open study of valproic acid for social phobia, there is a paucity of information on whether ot

Frequency and comorbidity of social phobia and social fears in adolescents.

This report presents findings on the frequency, comorbidity and psychosocial impairment of social phobia and social fears among 1035 adolescents, aged 12-17 years. The adolescents were randomly selected from 36 schools in the province of Bremen, Germany. Social phobia and other psychiatric disorders were coded based on DSM-IV criteria using the computerized Munich version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Seventeen (1.6%) of the adolescents met the DSM-IV criteria for social phobia sometimes in their life. More girls than boys received the diagnosis of social phobia and the

Substance abuse and homelessness: social selection or social adaptation?

Although substance abuse has for many years been documented as a serious problem among homeless populations, there is as yet no clear understanding of the nature of the relationship between substance abuse and homelessness. We evaluate alternative social selection and social adaptation models of this process. Using data from a random probability sample, the substance abuse and homeless experiences of 303 homeless people and people at risk of homelessness in Cook County, Illinois, were investigated. Proportional hazards regression models were employed to assess both social selection and social

Social support and the social environment of depressed and normal women.

A brief self-report measure of social support was administered initially to a student population, and then to a sample of hospitalized depressed women. Comparison of the responses of the 32 patients with 35 student women of similar age showed no differences between the groups in number of cohabitants or of casual friends, or in faith in the value of talking over one's problems. Patients were more likely than controls to report having no or few confidants, nobody confiding in them, and little confidence in being liked by others. Training in social skills specific to fostering intimacy is sugges

Episodic memory differences in social and non-social contexts.

Humans use existing knowledge to predict and recall events. As a social species, it has been argued that humans preferentially process and recall social information. Individuals then should be better at using prior knowledge of actors' character traits to predict and remember their behaviour in social contexts compared to predicting and remembering trait-consequence associations in non-social contexts. To test this hypothesised social episodic memory advantage, we modified a social episodic memory paradigm to include a social and non-social condition. 215 participants (18-65 years; 43% female)
