International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Scientific Statement on pulmonary antibody-mediated rejection and proposed graft, antibody, and pathology (GAP) definition.

Antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) is an increasingly recognized form of rejection and cause of graft failure after lung transplantation. AMR has been the focus of extensive research over the past decade. Despite growing awareness and recent advances in our understanding of AMR, outcomes remain dismal with a 2-year survival of only 20%. The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation convened a multidisciplinary workgroup of experts in AMR to review the most up-to-date research and clinical experience and to update the 2016 definition. The workgroup was divided into 9 subgroups cov

Use of direct oral anticoagulants in patients with thrombotic antiphospholipid syndrome: Guidance from the Scientific and Standardization Committee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

Clarity and guidance is required with regard to the use of direct oral anticoagulants in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) patients, within the confines of the recent European Medicines Agency recommendations, discrepant recommendations in other international guidelines and the limited evidence base. To address this, the Lupus Anticoagulant/Antiphospholipid Antibodies Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) chair and co-chairs together with SSC Control of Anticoagulation members propose guidance for healthcare professionals to help them manage APS patients. Uncertainty in this field will

The innate immune system in chronic cardiomyopathy: a European Society of Cardiology (ESC) scientific statement from the Working Group on Myocardial Function of the ESC.

Activation of the immune system in heart failure (HF) has been recognized for over 20 years. Initially, experimental studies demonstrated a maladaptive role of the immune system. However, several phase III trials failed to show beneficial effects in HF with therapies directed against an immune activation. Preclinical studies today describe positive and negative effects of immune activation in HF. These different effects depend on timing and aetiology of HF. Therefore, herein we give a detailed review on immune mechanisms and their importance for the development of HF with a special focus on co

Assisted Reproductive Technology in Japan: A Summary Report for 2023 by the Committee on Professional Scientific Conduct and Clinical Ethics of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

PURPOSE: To summarize assisted reproductive technology (ART) data for 2023 collected through the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: 625 out of 638 registered ART facilities took part in the study, documenting 561 664 treatment cycles and 85 048 newborns (+3.3% and +10.2% increases from 2022). The average age of women undergoing treatment was 37.3 years (standard deviation: 4.8); 205 986 cycles (36.7%) involved women aged ≥ 40 years. Among fresh cycles, oocyte retrieval was performed in 281 665 cycles, including 168 343 freeze-all cycles (59.8%). A total

Lupus anticoagulant testing in Belgian laboratories: a comparison with the 2020 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Scientific and Standardization Committee (ISTH-SSC) guidelines.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated lupus anticoagulant (LA) testing in Belgium and verified these findings against the 2020 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Scientific and Standardization Committee (ISTH-SSC) Guidelines. METHODS: A survey, interrogating pre- and post-analytical aspects of antiphospholipid antibodies, including LA analysis, was distributed to all Belgian laboratories (n = 111). RESULTS: About 66% of the laboratories responding to the entire survey (58%) performed LA analysis. About 78% used thrombocyte-free citrated plasma. Most (90%) used the combination of dilut

Complex roads from genotype to phenotype in dilated cardiomyopathy: scientific update from the Working Group of Myocardial Function of the European Society of Cardiology.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) frequently affects relatively young, economically, and socially active adults, and is an important cause of heart failure and transplantation. DCM is a complex disease and its pathological architecture encounters many genetic determinants interacting with environmental factors. The old perspective that every pathogenic gene mutation would lead to a diseased heart, is now being replaced by the novel observation that the phenotype depends not only on the penetrance-malignancy of the mutated gene-but also on epigenetics, age, toxic factors, pregnancy, and a diversity

Survey of surgical infections currently known (SOSICK): a multicenter examination of antimicrobial use from the surgical infection society scientific studies committee.

PURPOSE: The Scientific Studies Committee of the Surgical Infection Society undertook the present study to examine the prevalence of and indications for antimicrobial use in intensive care units where members of the Society practice. METHODS: Information and data collection sheets were posted on the Internet for download by members interested in participating. All centers were required to obtain approval from their local human subjects research office or equivalent. A one-week time was set during which the center could collect information on any one day, at the center's convenience. Data coll

Recommendations for neonatologists and pediatricians working in first level birthing centers on the first communication of genetic disease and malformation syndrome diagnosis: consensus issued by 6 Italian scientific societies and 4 parents' associations.

BACKGROUND: Genetic diseases are chronic conditions with relevant impact on the lives of patients and their families. In USA and Europe it is estimated a prevalence of 60 million affected subjects, 75% of whom are in developmental age. A significant number of newborns are admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) for reasons different from prematurity, although the prevalence of those with genetic diseases is unknown. It is, then, common for the neonatologist to start a diagnostic process on suspicion of a genetic disease or malformation syndrome, or to make and communicate these di

Antithrombotic treatment following revascularization for chronic limb-threatening ischaemia: a scientific statement of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Aorta and Peripheral Vascular Diseases and the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy.

Chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI) is defined as ischaemic rest pain, or non-healing ulceration, requiring endovascular or surgical lower limb revascularization (LLR). Lower limb revascularization in CLTI entails a high risk of major adverse limb events (MALE) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). This scientific statement addresses this risk based on a systematic review. A structured literature search was performed, and articles were independently evaluated by two investigators. In total, 1678 articles were identified, of which 34 were included in the final analysis. Only thr

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance derived myocardial strain: applications, acquisition techniques, analysis, and reporting. A Scientific Statement of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, Radiological Society of North America, and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging of the ESC.

Myocardial strain imaging enables quantification of cardiac deformation. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is well suited for strain assessment due to the ability to image in any given plane with high spatial and contrast resolution. CMR strain measures have incremental diagnostic and prognostic utility over conventional clinical imaging parameters across disease states. Routine integration of CMR strain assessment in clinical practice has been hindered by the lack of agreement on imaging protocols and analysis methods, variability due to noise sensitivity, and a paucity of robus
