The dilemma of past success: insiders' views on the future of the international family planning movement.

Many observers believe that the international family planning movement has played a significant role in reducing fertility levels and slowing population growth in the developing world. Yet the perceived success of family planning programs recently has led some researchers to formulate questions about their relevance and future place on the development policy agenda. Within a framework derived from the sociological literature on social movements, we use interviews and focus-group discussions with insiders in the field of population studies to examine current perspectives on the status and futur

Examination by logistic regression modelling of the variables which increase the relative risk of elderly women falling compared to elderly men.

In a community based, prospective study to determine risk factors for falls, 465 women and 296 men 70 years and over were followed for 1 year and 507 falls were documented. A greater proportion of women (32.7%) than men (23.0%) experienced at least one fall in which there was no or minimal external contribution. Using unconditional logistic regression models we investigated the effect of physical and sociological variables on the sex difference in fall rate. Controlling for the variables age, use of psychotropic drugs, inability to rise from a chair without using arms, going outdoors less than

Impairment and abuse of elderly by staff in long-term care in Michigan: evidence from structural equation modeling.

Elder abuse in long-term care has become a very important public health concern. Recent estimates of elder abuse prevalence are in the range of 2% to 10% (Lachs & Pillemer, 2004), and current changes in population structure indicate a potential for an upward trend in prevalence (Malley-Morrison, Nolido, & Chawla, 2006; Post et al., 2006). More than 20 years ago, Karl Pillemer called for sociological research on patient maltreatment in nursing homes and provided an overview model for the conduct of such research (Pillemer, 1988). The research literature since then has not provided the definitiv

Epidemiology of pelvic inflammatory disease.

The epidemiologic study of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is hindered by symptoms that differ substantially from case to case, and by a substantial number of "silent" cases with few or no symptoms. Demographic data indicate that PID is primarily a disease of the young. Race also appears to be a determinant, but whether for biologic or sociologic reasons is not known. Women who are not married face a greater risk for PID than married women. The majority of PID cases are associated with sexually transmitted diseases. Consistent with this finding is the pattern of risk factors related to sexua

[The Impact of Labor Conditions on Health Conditions of Traumatologists of Emergency Service].

The organization of emergency medical care varies from one country to another. However, the basic requirements applied to specialists in case of emergency curative diagnostic measures are common: fast feedback, professionalism, emotional stability. Therefore, the key characteristic of emergency medicine is to instantly react twenty-four hours per day. The medical workers of considered category are in condition of increased physical and mental loading. According the WHO concept, a negative impact of working environment is a key factor of development of professional burn-out syndrome. Despite th

The rise of cancer in urban India: Cultural understandings, structural inequalities and the emergence of the clinic.

Cancer services in India have evolved and expanded significantly in recent years, with a surge in the availability of biomedical oncological treatment facilities for certain cohorts of the Indian population in urban areas. Despite significant and sustained economic development in many areas of India, major issues persist in the delivery of cancer care, even in the context of relatively prosperous urban populations. This article explores the dilemmas evident in Indian cancer care as perceived by a group of Indian oncology clinicians. Specifically, the interviews focused on their perspectives on

The social and economic outcome after upper limb amputation.

This paper reports a study of 66 upper limb amputees in County Funen, Denmark who were visited in their homes by the author. The purpose of this study was to evaluate for the same period of time the social and economic outcome for a population of upper limb amputees compared with the normal population. The number of amputees investigated corresponds to the annual number of persons becoming upper limb amputees in Denmark. The aetiology of registered amputees also corresponds to the Danish Amputation Register. The amputees had become "better placed" in the social system after amputation independ

Demographic, Behavioral, and Social Characteristics Associated With Smoking and Vaping Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in San Francisco.

Tobacco use is the leading lifestyle-related cause of death in the United States. We analyzed correlates of smoking and vaping tobacco in the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in San Francisco in 2014 ( n = 410) using multivariable logistic regression models. We found that more than two in five MSM (41%) smoked or vaped. Smoking was greater for men of color (46% vs. 35%; p = .02); those with annual income below $50,000 (47% vs. 34%; p = .01); those without a college education (51% vs. 30%; p < .01); and the uninsured (55% vs. 38%; p = .04). Identifying the impact of social determinants of health on disease rates using correlation analysis of area-based summary information.

OBJECTIVES: We developed a statistical tool that brings together standard, accessible, and well-understood analytic approaches and uses area-based information and other publicly available data to identify social determinants of health (SDH) that significantly affect the morbidity of a specific disease. METHODS: We specified AIDS as the disease of interest and used data from the American Community Survey and the National HIV Surveillance System. Morbidity and socioeconomic variables in the two data systems were linked through geographic areas that can be identified in both systems. Correlation

Neuropsychiatric Outcomes and Sleep Dysfunction in COVID-19 Patients: Risk Factors and Mechanisms.

The ongoing global health crisis due to the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has significantly impacted all aspects of life. While the majority of early research following the coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has focused on the physiological effects of the virus, a substantial body of subsequent studies has shown that the psychological burden of the infection is also considerable. Patients, even without mental illness history, were at increased susceptibility to developing mental health and sleep disturbances during or after the COVID-19 inf

Role of culture in gambling and problem gambling.

There has been a significant gap in the gambling literature regarding the role of culture in gambling and problem gambling (PG). This paper aims to this such gap by presenting a systematic review of the cultural variations in gambling and PG as well as a discussion of the role cultural variables can play in the initiation and maintenance of gambling in order to stimulate further research. The review shows that although studies investigating prevalence rates of gambling and PG among different cultures are not plentiful, evidence does suggest certain cultural groups are more vulnerable to begin

[Recent aspects of the suicide problem (author's transl)].

The problem of suicide is linked not only with psychiatric and psychological aspects, but also with sociological, ethical and legal, philosophical and theological problems. Significantly results of suicide research are represented by the psychoanalytic aspects of suicide as a conflict of aggression and narcissistic crisis, as well as by the description of the "presuicidal syndrome" (Ringel) and the structural analysis of the suicidal event. Today, suicidal syndromes are strikingly frequent among adolescents, the aged, drug addicts, dipsomaniacs and alcohol and other addicts in general as well

The role of sport norms and organizational pressure on coaches' use of interpersonal violence: The mediating role of perceived instrumental effects of violence.

Interpersonal violence (IV) in sport is a pervasive issue that threatens athletes' physical, social, and psychological well-being. Sociological theories suggest that organisational pressure and adherence to sport norms, such as traditional masculinity and sport ethic, may contribute to coaches' beliefs in the instrumental benefits of violence, leading to the perpetration of IV. Despite prior research into these risk factors, no study has simultaneously examined individual, organisational, and societal factors influencing coaches' use of IV. This study aimed to explore how coaches' beliefs rega

Do Neighborhoods Matter? A Systematic Review of Modifiable Risk Factors for Obesity among Low Socio-Economic Status Black and Hispanic Children.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity increases the risk of obesity and harmful comorbidities later in life. It is influenced by characteristics of a child's neighborhood, particularly among underserved groups. Our objective was to systematically review the evidence relating neighborhood environment and obesity risk among urban, low socioeconomic status (SES) Black and Hispanic children. METHODS: We included studies published from 1993 through early 2017 from PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Sociological Abstracts databases investigating relationships between empirically measured neighborhood char

Breast cancer in the global south and the limitations of a biomedical framing: a critical review of the literature.

Public health researchers are devoting increasing attention to the growing burden of breast cancer in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs), previously thought to be minimally impacted by this disease. A critical examination of this body of literature is needed to explore the assumptions, advantages and limitations of current approaches. In our critical literature review, we find that researchers and public health practitioners predominantly privilege a biomedical perspective focused on patients' adherence (or non-adherence) to 'preventive' practices, screening behaviours and treatment regim
