Soft tissue involvement in extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an exceptionally rare occurrence within the spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms. This case report presents the unique scenario of a patient who developed a soft tissue mass EMP subsequent to receiving radiation therapy for a solitary bone plasmacytoma at a distinct anatomical site. The primary objective of this report is to elucidate the clinical characteristics, diagnostic complexities, and management considerations associated with this uncommon presentation. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, we aim to provide

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of soft tissue is a rare tumor in children. Although LMS may exhibit clinical and histologic features that are typical of smooth muscle neoplasms in adults, they may often be confused with or resemble tumors of presumed fibroblastic, myofibroblastic, or rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. As a result, the diagnosis of LMS in children is often difficult to establish with confidence. To address this problem, we analyzed the immunohistochemical features of six LMS in children (one of deep soft tissue of an extremity, one of paravertebral tissue, one of the retroperitoneum, two

BACKGROUND Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is a potentially fatal disease that consists of hemangioma(s) with thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and coagulopathy. Extensive hemangiomatosis is rare. We present the radiological features and treatment strategy of a young adult suffering from Kasabach-Merritt syndrome with widespread hemangiomas and an infected huge hematoma in the right thigh. CASE REPORT A 33-year-old Taiwanese male presented with a painful 20-cm mass over his right thigh and gross hematuria for 2 days. Hemangiomatosis was bioptically proven in infancy and the patien

Oral myoepithelioma of soft tissue origin, an entity distinct from myoepithelioma of salivary glands, constitutes an extremely rare benign neoplasm, with only 1 previously published case, affecting the tongue of a 22-year-old woman. Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECT) also is a very rare benign neoplasm of the oral cavity that has a strong predilection for the anterior dorsum of the tongue. The great similarities in the histologic and immunohistochemical characteristics of soft tissue myoepithelioma (STM) and ECT probably indicate that they refer to the same or closely related pathologi

Infiltrative lipomas, similar to those described in man, were diagnosed in 12 dogs of various breeds, sexes, and ages. The neoplasms were poorly delineated, soft enlargements in muscle and connective tissue that caused dysfunction because of mechanical interference or pressure pain. The neoplasms consisted of differentiated fat cells that had infiltrated between or replaced muscle, collagen fibers or both. Single or multiple recurrences followed surgical removal in four of eight dogs: no follow-up was possible in the other four.

In a study of 256 non-epithelial neoplasms involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, only two lesions were classified as adipose tissue tumors (one lipoma and one liposarcoma). The lipoma was found incidentally when tissue removed from the maxillary sinus was studied histologically, the patient having been treated with a Caldwell-Luc procedure for maxillary sinusitis. The liposarcoma produced a large mass involving the nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid area, hard palate and maxillary, temporal and sphenoid bones. The tumor extended into the cranial cavity and eventual

Giant cell tumors (GCT) are a rare group of fibrohistiocytic neoplasms that may originate from bone or soft tissue. They are typically found in the extremities or trunk and are rarely reported in the head and neck. While they are benign, they may grow rapidly and be locally destructive. To our knowledge, only three case reports of giant cell tumors of soft tissue involving the orbit have been reported in the literature. We report two cases: one case of giant cell tumor associated with Paget's disease of the bone and one of tenosynovial giant cell tumor.

Two patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and indolent forms of soft-tissue sarcomas (extraosseous osteogenic sarcoma and desmoid tumor) are presented. The literature is reviewed regarding these tumors, which have not previously been recognized in association with IBD. Despite the well-established relationship between IBD and neoplasms of epithelial and lymphoreticular origin, there have been limited data in this context pertaining to mesenchymal tumors. Two preceding reports have described the coexistence of IBD with another form of soft tissue sarcoma (Kaposi's sarcoma). Given that

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare soft tissue neoplasm arising from mesenchymal elements with characteristic production of osteoid. These tumours are known to have high rate of distant metastasis and dismal prognosis. We present a rare case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma arising in medial aspect of knee joint with synchronous inguinal node and soft tissue metastasis. The patient was initially diagnosed as myositis ossificans at an outside institute and excised without prior imaging or biopsy. The patient presented to our hospital with recurrent lesion along with palpable inguinal lymph nodes

Epithelial marker expression and/or epithelial differentiation, as well as "anomalous" expression of keratins, are features of some soft tissue tumors. Recently, we have encountered an unusual mesenchymal tumor composed of bland, distinctly eosinophilic, keratin-positive epithelial cells, which were almost entirely obscured by xanthogranulomatous inflammation. Six cases were identified (5 F, 1 M; 16-62 years (median 21 years)) arising in soft tissue (n = 4) and bone (n = 2) and ranging in size from 2 to 7 cm. The tumors were generally circumscribed, with a fibrous capsule containing lymphoid a

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is gaining wider acceptance for the diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders in the elderly, including internal joint derangements, neoplasms, and osteonecrosis. For internal derangement of large joints such as the knee, MRI is a noninvasive alternative to arthrography and offers excellent visualization. It plays an important role in the diagnosis and staging of primary and secondary neoplasms, including both osseous and soft tissue sarcomas. MRI is also indicated for diagnosing osteonecrosis that cannot be detected using other imaging modalities.

Sarcomas constitute 5% of all of head and neck neoplasms. Angiosarcomas comprise 2% of all soft tissue tumors, 60% appear in skin and soft tissue, 50% in the head and neck and only 4% are present in the upper aerodigestive tract. We report a case of a 52 year old healthy woman with headache, weeping, foreign body sensation in the left nostril and epixtasis. The TAC identified a tumor in the left nostril that invaded the osseous lamina of the skull. The histopathologic diagnosis was angiosarcoma. We carried out a literature review and analysis from 1976 to 2004. Agiosarcomas of the upper aerodi

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumours (pPNET) are aggressive neoplasms that require radical surgical resection with adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A pPNET of the posterior chest wall was resected with wide soft tissue margins in a 14 year old male. Following tumour excision a spacer device was positioned in the retroperitoneum adjacent to the ipsilateral left kidney displacing it from the planned radiotherapy field. A pedicled latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap was used to achieve robust soft tissue cover. Ultrasound demonstrated anteromedial displacement of the left kidney wit

There is no shortage of comprehensive review articles on bone and soft tissue pathology, almost always representing a regurgitation of the literature with little to no guidance on personal "best practices," recommended applications of ancillary testing, and alternative points of view. This special issue of Human Pathology uniquely unites evidence-based medicine, where appropriate, with the collective personal experiences of a wide range of accomplished pathologists from varying institutions and backgrounds, addressing problematic areas, updated and sometimes imperfect classification systems, a

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a benign mesenchymal tumor of young children. It has a broad clinical differential diagnosis and is often clinically confused for vascular and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Recognition of the unique histologic features of FHI, a triphasic population of mature adipose tissue, mature fibrous tissue, and immature mesenchymal tissue, will ensure the correct diagnosis. In this report we present a case of this rare entity, including the associated clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings.

Malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (MEH), also known as high-risk epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, is a low- to intermediate-grade vascular malignancy originally described as a vascular neoplasm of endothelial origin. This very rare vascular neoplasm has been described mainly in soft tissue, but also in various organs and locations, including the liver, lung, brain, colon, lymph nodes, peritoneum, spleen, bone, skin, heart, soft tissues, and vascular system. Several cases have been described in the head and neck, including the submandibular gland, parotid gland, nasal cavity, paraphar

Meningiomas generally present as slow-growing, expanding intracranial lesions and are the most common benign intracranial tumor in adults. Rarely, meningiomas can exhibit malignant potential and present as extracranial soft-tissue masses through extension or as primary extracranial cutaneous neoplasms. Although they are uncommonly encountered by dermatologists, it is important to include meningioma in the differential diagnosis for scalp neoplasms. We present a rare case of a 68-year-old woman with scalp metastasis of meningioma 11 years after initial resection of the primary tumor.

AIM: To determine whether aP2 expression is a useful diagnostic marker in soft tissue tumour pathology.
METHODS: A polyclonal antibody to aP2 was used to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of this protein in benign and malignant tumours of adipocytic differentiation and a wide variety of other neoplasms.
RESULTS: aP2 was only expressed by lipoblasts (in all types of liposarcoma and in lipoblastomatosis) and by brown fat cells (in both hibernomas and normal periadrenal fetal fat). Other benign adipose tissue tumours and malignant connective tissue or epithelial tumours were distin
