Machine learning study using 2020 SDHS data to determine poverty determinants in Somalia.

Extensive research has been conducted on poverty in developing countries using conventional regression analysis, which has limited prediction capability. This study aims to address this gap by applying advanced machine learning (ML) methods to predict poverty in Somalia. Utilizing data from the first-ever 2020 Somalia Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS), a cross-sectional study design is considered. ML methods, including random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), support vector machine (SVM), and logistic regression, are tested and applied using R software version 4.1.2, while conventional metho

Clinical presentation of louse-borne relapsing fever among Ethiopian refugees in northern Somalia.

Louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) is still endemic among Ethiopian populations. In order to assess the clinical presentation of LBRF in an Ethiopian refugee camp in northern Somalia, a referral system was organized for all pyrexias of unknown origin. Among the 134 patients referred, 37 showed Borrelia in fresh and stained blood smears. Common clinical features were: high fever (above 39 degrees C in 73% of the cases), headache and general body pain (88%), liver tenderness (62%), petechia (54%), nausea and vomiting (46%), chills and rigors (30%) and epistaxis (11%). Jaundice was absent. No fat

High Prevalence and New Genotype of Coxiella burnetii in Ticks Infesting Camels in Somalia.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever. It can infect animals, humans, and birds, as well as ticks, and it has a worldwide geographical distribution. To better understand the epidemiology of C. burnetii in Somalia, ticks infesting camels were collected from five different regions, including Bari, Nugaal, Mudug, Sool, and Sanaag, between January and March 2018. Collected ticks were tested for C. burnetii and Coxiella-like endosymbiont DNA by using IS1111, icd, and Com1-target PCR assays. Moreover, sequencing of the 16S-rRNA was conducted. Molecular characterization and typing were

Beyond therapeutic feeding: a call for integrated strategies to end child malnutrition in Somalia.

Somalia records one of the highest global burdens of child wasting and stunting, with approximately 1.7-1.85 million children under five estimated to be affected by acute malnutrition annually during 2022-2025, including approximately 421,000-513,550 children with severe acute malnutrition. For over two decades, the dominant policy response has been community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), a curative intervention that treats clinical endpoints rather than underlying drivers. Despite meeting international cure-rate standards, CMAM alone cannot address the food insecurity, water,

Prostate Cancer Screening in Somalia: A Perspective on Addressing a Critical Gap in Early Detection.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading cancers affecting men worldwide, with a growing burden in sub-Saharan Africa where mortality-to-incidence ratios remain among the highest globally. In many countries within the region, a substantial proportion of patients present with advanced-stage disease, reflecting limited access to early detection and diagnostic services, and despite the demonstrated benefits of screening, these gains have not been equitably realized in low-resource settings. In Somalia, prostate cancer screening is largely absent, contributing to late-stage diagnosis and poor clinica

Digitization of Historical Data from Somalia's Last Smallpox Outbreaks 1976-1977.

Over more than three thousand years, smallpox caused millions of deaths worldwide. With smallpox declared eradicated in 1980, potential use of the variola virus as a bioterrorist threat remains a concern. While modern disease outbreaks are modelled using current data, understanding how to control an eradicated disease such as smallpox relies on the analysis of historical data. Handwritten smallpox outbreak data from Somalia (1976-1977) were obtained from the World Health Organization by a Public Health England study team (now UK Health Security Agency). The data were manually transcribed into

Serological and molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in ruminants from Somalia.

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infect a wide range of domestic and wild animals, including humans, in the case of T. gondii, and cause economic losses in livestock due to abortion and neonatal mortality. In Somalia, zoonotic diseases are concerning due to cultural practices and livestock's economic importance, but surveillance is limited. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum in Somali sheep, goats, and cattle. A cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2018 and January 2020 in Benadir and Lower Shabelle region

A blunt traumatic giant pseudoaneurysm of the brachiocephalic artery: A case report from Somalia.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudoaneurysm of the brachiocephalic artery is a rare condition that can occur as a result of various causes, including trauma, iatrogenic injury, and infection. The clinical presentation of brachiocephalic artery pseudoaneurysms can vary depending on the size and location of the pseudoaneurysm. The treatment options for innominate artery pseudoaneurysms include both surgical and endovascular approaches. Our goal of the study is to increase awareness and early detection of blunt injuries in the chest, clavicle, or sternoclavicular joint that may cause a vascular injury. CASE PR
