[Psychopathological profiles in fibromyalgia and chronic tensional type headache. Comparison with undifferentiated somatoform disorder].

Fibromyalgia and tensional headache are two of the most prevalent functional disorders. Both seem to imply relationships with processes of the psychopathological sphere. However, they have been little studied since Psychiatry. This descriptive observational research work, with a consulting population of the Hospital "T. Álvarez" in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, focuses on certain psychiatric and psychological variables chosen for this purpose. The results are compared with those of a sample of patients diagnosed with Undifferentiated Somatoform Disorder, from the Mental Health service.

Altered Spontaneous Activity in Patients with Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder Revealed by Regional Homogeneity.

Persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) is a mental disorder un-associated with any somatic injury and can cause severe somatosensory and emotional impairments in patients. However, so far, the neuro-pathophysiological mechanism of the functional impairments in PSPD is still unclear. The present study assesses the difference in regional spontaneous activity between PSPD and healthy controls (HC) during a resting state, in order to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying PSPD. Resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging data were obtained from 13 PSPD patients and 23 age- and gend

Updates on Somatoform Disorders (SFMD) in Parkinson's Disease and Dementia with Lewy Bodies and discussion of phenomenology.

Somatoform Disorders (SFMD) were recently described in Parkinson Disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). The present paper updates the observations in our cohort of patients and further details clinical phenomenology. Of 3178 patients consecutively referred to our Institutions from 1999, 1572 subjects had neurodegenerative diseases and 1718 psychiatric disorders. After 2-9 years of follow up, 488 patients were labelled as PD, 415 as Alzheimer Disease, 162 as DLB, 48 as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, 48 as Multiple System Atrophy and 49 as Fronto-Temporal Dementia. Actual neurosis as the underlying psychic structure of panic disorder, somatization, and somatoform disorder: an integration of Freudian and attachment perspectives.

Starting from a contemporary critique of the DSM-IV, this paper argues that the diagnostic categories of panic disorder somatization, and undifferentiated somatoform disorders can be understood as belonging to a common type of psychopathology--i.e., the Freudian actual neuroses. In addition to their strong clinical similarity, these disorders share an etiological similarity; and the authors propose a combination of Freud's focus on this type of patient's inability to represent an endogenous drive arousal with the post-Freudian focus on separation anxiety. An etiological hypothesis is put forwa

The randomized clinical trial results of the anxiety treatment in patients with somatoform dysfunction and neurotic disorders.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The existing treatments for somatoform dysfunction (SfD), reaction to severe stress (RSS), and adjustment disorders (AjD) are insufficiently effective and safe. Anxiolytic drug Tenoten proved effective in clinical trials (CT). The aim of this multicenter double-blind placebo-controlled randomized CT was to investigate the safety and efficacy of Tenoten in the treatment of anxiety in adults with SfD, RSS, AjD and other neurotic disorders (oNDs). 390 adult patients with SfD, RSS and AjD or oNDs with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale-anxiety (HADS-A) score ≥ 11 were randomized into 4 grou

Persistent Idiopathic Facial Pain Associated with Somatoform Disorder in an 11-Year-Old Boy.

Persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP) is a poorly understood chronic disorder that rarely occurs in children. An 11-year-old boy initially presented with right cheek pain and a streptococcal infection 6 weeks previously. Facial cellulitis was suspected, which was resolved by antibiotic treatment. The right cheek pain recurred within 4 weeks of this initial visit. Because the antibiotic treatment did not relieve the pain, the patient visited our outpatient clinic. Physical examination revealed facial tenderness in an area that corresponded with the region supplied by the second branch of the

The Influence of Trauma on Autobiographical Memory in the Assessment of Somatoform Disorders According to DSM IV Criteria.

Recalling an event impairs an individual's later ability to recall related knowledge. Impairment in this retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) produces a dysfunction in autobiographical memory. This, like somatic symptoms, has been documented in trauma and sexual abuse survivors. To investigate the relationship between past trauma and somatoform disorders, and the role of memory recall dysfunction in this relationship, three sex-matched groups were constituted using DSM IV criteria: Somatoform (SD) (n. 22) other Psychiatric Disorders (PD) (n. 26) and Healthy Subjects (HS) (n. 35). Treatment for Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder via Electroacupuncture and a Low Dosage of Fluoxetine Hydrochloride.

CONTEXT: The clinical treatment of somatoform pain disorder (SPD) commonly combines antianxiety and antidepressant medication with pain medication, yet the method often entails a lengthy treatment, with uncertain outcomes, and, on occasion, significant side effects. Acupuncture can activate a patient's own pain control system, stimulate blood flow, repair the physical damage of emotional distress, reduce pain, lift mood, and boost the immune system. OBJECTIVE: The study intended to evaluate the benefits of adding a small dosage of fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac) to electroacupuncture treatm

Prevalence of restless legs syndrome in somatoform pain disorder and its effect on quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Persistent somatoform pain disorder (SPD) is a condition in which the patient suffers from persistent, severe and distressing pain; and from associated physical and psychological distress. While presence of restless leg syndrome (RLS) in SPD is understudied, their association might have an impact on general well-being and quality of life (QoL) in SPD. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Present study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of RLS in SPD patients attending outpatient department services at a tertiary care institute in eastern India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and forty consec

Facial affect perception and mentalizing abilities in female patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated a robust link between alexithymic traits and somatic complaints in patients suffering from psychosomatic disorders, while less is known about disease-related impairments in the processing of affective social information. Deficits in emotion recognition can lead to misinterpretations of social signals and induce distress in interpersonal interactions. This, in turn, might contribute to somatoform symptomatology in affected individuals. The aim of the present study was to investigate basal facial affect recognition as well as higher-order cognitive

Memory performance related to organic and psychosocial illness attributions in somatoform pain disorder patients.

OBJECTIVE: Somatoform disorders are characterized by patterns of persistent bodily complaints. Organic illness attributions are assumed to represent a central supporting factor in the development and maintenance of somatoform disorders. Using group control design, we aimed to investigate the processing of illness-belief-related word stimuli in somatoform pain disorder patients. METHODS: Organic-related, psychosocial-related, and neutral word stimuli were presented to 14 somatoform pain patients with a predominantly organic illness attribution, 14 somatoform pain patients with a predominantly

The impact of cognitions on the development of panic and somatoform disorders: a prospective study in patients with vestibular neuritis.

BACKGROUND: There is a high incidence of panic and somatoform disorders after vestibular neuritis. However, the occurrence of psychiatric disorders has been shown to be unrelated to persistent functional vestibular impairment. The aim of the present study was to examine the role played by cognitions in the development of panic and somatoform disorders. METHOD: In a 2-year prospective study, cognitions were recorded at various stages using the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire and Body Sensations Questionnaire. Our analysis focused on whether body-related anxiety or panic-related thoughts c

Central psychological symptoms from a network analysis of patients with anxiety, somatoform or personality disorders before psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional network analysis examines the relationships between symptoms to explain how they constitute disorders. Up to now, research focuses mostly on depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and rarely assesses larger networks of various symptoms measured with instruments independent of classifications. Studies on large groups of psychotherapy patients are also rare. METHODS: Analyzing triangulated maximally filtered graph (TMFG) networks of 62 psychological symptoms reported by 4616 consecutive nonpsychotic adults in 1980-2015. RESULTS: Case-dropping and nonparametric b

Somatoform disorders among patients attending walk-in clinics in Trinidad: prevalence and association with depression and anxiety.

Objectives Somatoform disorders are common in international primary care settings, but have been little studied in the developing world. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of severe undifferentiated somatoform disorder, and its relationship to depression and anxiety, among patients attending walk-in clinics in Trinidad. Methods The study participants, who were all aged 18 years or older and attending walk-in clinics at 16 randomly selected health centres, were surveyed between May and August 2007 using the PRIME-MD questionnaire.
