Experimental study of micro-habitat selection by ixodid ticks feeding on avian hosts.

Mechanisms of on-host habitat selection of parasites are important to the understanding of host-parasite interactions and evolution. To this end, it is important to separate the factors driving parasite micro-habitat selection from those resulting from host anti-parasite behaviour. We experimentally investigated whether tick infestation patterns on songbirds are the result of an active choice by the ticks themselves, or the outcome of songbird grooming behaviour. Attachment patterns of three ixodid tick species with different ecologies and host specificities were studied on avian hosts. Ixodes

Delta-9-THC exposure during zebra finch sensorimotor vocal learning increases cocaine reinforcement in adulthood.

Zebra finches are songbirds that learn vocal patterns during a sensitive period of development that approximates adolescence. Exposure of these animals to a cannabinoid agonist during their period of sensorimotor vocal learning alters song patterns produced in adulthood. Thus, songbirds have unique value in studying developmental effects of drug exposure on a naturally learned behavior. A missing feature of this animal model has been a method to study drug reinforcement of behavior. To address this gap we have adapted place conditioning methods, used previously to determine that singing behavi

Expression patterns of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors in Bengalese finch (Lonchura striata var. domestica) brain suggest a relationship between stress hormones and song-system development.

Much evidence suggests that song traits function as an honest signal of male quality during mate choice in songbirds. Because songbirds learn vocalizations during the juvenile stage, development of the song system and song traits is affected by stressful conditions. However, it remains unknown how stressful conditions affect later song traits during development. To explore the relationship between glucocorticoids and song-system development, we performed in situ hybridization analysis of the glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors in juvenile and adult brains. The glucocorticoid recepto

[Meaning and Mechanisms of Birdsong: Inspiration for Pneumology].

In contrast to humans, the location where sound is produced in birds is not the larynx, but rather the so-called "vocal box" (scientific term "Syrinx"). In some species the syrinx is located at the bifurcation point of the trachea into the two main bronchi (tracheal vocal head), while in some in the main bronchi (bronchial vocal head). During inspiration, part of the air flows into the lungs, and the part needed for singing flows into the air sacs adjacent to the lungs. During expiration, air leaves the air sacs and flows through the syrinx, where the song is created. When birds sing in two vo

Mercury flow through an Asian rice-based food web.

Mercury (Hg) is a globally-distributed pollutant, toxic to humans and animals. Emissions are particularly high in Asia, and the source of exposure for humans there may also be different from other regions, including rice as well as fish consumption, particularly in contaminated areas. Yet the threats Asian wildlife face in rice-based ecosystems are as yet unclear. We sought to understand how Hg flows through rice-based food webs in historic mining and non-mining regions of Guizhou, China. We measured total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in soil, rice, 38 animal species (27 for MeHg) spannin

Biophysical network modeling of temporal and stereotyped sequence propagation of neural activity in the premotor nucleus HVC.

Stereotyped neural sequences are often exhibited in the brain, yet the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying their generation are not fully understood. Birdsong is a prominent model to study such behavior, particularly because juvenile songbirds progressively learn from their tutors and by adulthood are able to sing stereotyped song patterns. The songbird premotor nucleus HVC coordinates motor and auditory activity responsible for learned vocalizations. The HVC comprises three neural populations that have distinct in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological responses. Typically, models that e

Automated inference of respiratory and syringeal biomechanical trajectories from birdsong acoustics.

Songbirds, in particular zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), provide a powerful model for investigating the neural mechanisms of learned vocal behavior. Researchers typically rely on the acoustic structure of birdsong to quantify vocal behavior. As a more direct measure of motor control, we present VIBE: Vocal acoustic Inversion to Biomechanical Estimates, an open-source pipeline that recovers the biomechanical control parameters of song production from the pitch and amplitude of the acoustic waveform. Biomechanical models of the songbird syrinx describe vocal production with two continuously

Mercury exposure alone, or combined with chronic food stress, elevates blood corticosterone in the zebra finch.

The abundance of songbirds has declined across North America over the last 50 years. Thus, it is crucial to understand drivers of population losses, including environmental contaminants, such as mercury. The effects of mercury on songbird health are still not fully understood. We studied the effect of mercury on the corticosterone-mediated stress response in captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Birds were subjected to 45 days of sublethal (approximately 1 mg/kg) dietary mercury alone or in combination with another stressor, 25 consecutive days of unpredictable food availability, beginn

Comparative approaches to the neurobiology of avian vocal learning.

Birdsong provides an opportunity to study sensorimotor learning in the context of brain evolution. Despite the vast diversity in song behavior across species, mechanistic understanding of birdsong comes primarily from the zebra finch, a closed-ended songbird that learns one simple and stereotyped song, which it keeps singing throughout adulthood. It remains unclear if neural mechanisms of finch song production and learning generalize with other species, including open-ended learners with more complex and variable vocalizations. Here we review finch communication alongside both closely and dist

Ectoparasitism during an avian disease outbreak: An experiment with Mycoplasma-infected house finches and ticks.

Hosts are typically co-parasitized by multiple species. Parasites can benefit or suffer from the presence of other parasites, which can reduce or increase the overall virulence due to competition or facilitation. Outcomes of new multi-parasite systems are seldom predictable. In 1994 the bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum jumped from poultry to songbirds in which it caused an epidemic throughout North America. Songbirds are often parasitized by hard ticks, and can act as reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens. We tested the hypothesis that Mycoplasma infection in house finches influences North Ame

Recent Advances in the Genetics of Vocal Learning.

Language is a complex communicative behavior unique to humans, and its genetic basis is poorly understood. Genes associated with human speech and language disorders provide some insights, originating with the FOXP2 transcription factor, a mutation in which is the source of an inherited form of developmental verbal dyspraxia. Subsequently, targets of FOXP2 regulation have been associated with speech and language disorders, along with other genes. Here, we review these recent findings that implicate genetic factors in human speech. Due to the exclusivity of language to humans, no single animal m

Susceptibility and Antibody Response of the Laboratory Model Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) to West Nile Virus.

Since the introduction of West Nile virus (WNV) into North America in 1999 a number of passerine bird species have been found to play a role in the amplification of the virus. Arbovirus surveillance, observational studies and experimental studies have implicated passerine birds (songbirds, e.g., crows, American robins, house sparrows, and house finches) as significant reservoirs of WNV in North America, yet we lack a tractable passerine animal model for controlled studies of the virus. The zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) serves as a model system across a diversity of fields, and here we deve

Storms, budworms and vagrant birds in a changing world.

The seasonal migration of billions of birds is one of the most spectacular events in the natural world's annual cycle. Migration lets birds exploit spatiotemporally dynamic resources and involves complex trade-offs for survivorship. The migratory movements of individual birds are routinely influenced by atmospheric and ecological connections across long distances. Suboptimal conditions during active migration often lead to bird displacement, sometimes en masse. Birds that are displaced outside of their regular geographic ranges are known as vagrants, arguably the most spectacular instances of

Singing-related neural activity in a dorsal forebrain-basal ganglia circuit of adult zebra finches.

The anterior forebrain pathway (AFP) of songbirds, a specialized dorsal forebrain-basal ganglia circuit, is crucial for song learning but has a less clear function in adults. We report here that neurons in two nuclei of the AFP, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (LMAN) and Area X, show marked changes in neurophysiological activity before and during singing in adult zebra finches. The presence of modulation before song output suggests that singing-related AFP activity originates, at least in part, in motor control nuclei. Some neurons in LMAN of awake birds also resp

Visually-guided compensation of deafening-induced song deterioration.

Human language learning and maintenance depend primarily on auditory feedback but are also shaped by other sensory modalities. Individuals who become deaf after learning to speak (post-lingual deafness) experience a gradual decline in their language abilities. A similar process occurs in songbirds, where deafness leads to progressive song deterioration. However, songbirds can modify their songs using non-auditory cues, challenging the prevailing assumption that auditory feedback is essential for vocal control. In this study, we investigated whether deafened birds could use visual cues to preve

Early life neonicotinoid exposure results in proximal benefits and ultimate carryover effects.

Neonicotinoids are insecticides widely used as seed treatments that appear to have multiple negative effects on birds at a diversity of biological scales. Adult birds exposed to a low dose of imidacloprid, one of the most commonly used neonicotinoids, presented reduced fat stores, delayed migration and potentially altered orientation. However, little is known on the effect of imidacloprid on birds growth rate despite studies that have documented disruptive effects of low imidacloprid doses on thyroid gland communication. We performed a [Formula: see text] factorial design experiment in Zebra f

Syringeal specialization of frequency control during song production in the Bengalese finch (Lonchura striata domestica).

BACKGROUND: Singing in songbirds is a complex, learned behavior which shares many parallels with human speech. The avian vocal organ (syrinx) has two potential sound sources, and each sound generator is under unilateral, ipsilateral neural control. Different songbird species vary in their use of bilateral or unilateral phonation (lateralized sound production) and rapid switching between left and right sound generation (interhemispheric switching of motor control). Bengalese finches (Lonchura striata domestica) have received considerable attention, because they rapidly modify their song in resp

Detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia odocoilei, Babesia sp., Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato, and Hepatozoon canis in Ixodes scapularis Ticks Collected in Eastern Canada.

Tick-borne pathogens cause infectious diseases that inflict much societal and financial hardship worldwide. Blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, are primary vectors of several epizootic and zoonotic pathogens. The aim was to find varius pathogens of I. scapularis and to determine their prevalence. In Ontario and Quebec, 113 I. scapularis ticks were collected from songbirds, mammals, including humans, and by flagging. PCR and DNA sequencing detected five different microorganisms: Anaplasma phagocytophilum, 1 (0.9%); Babesia odocoilei, 17 (15.3%); Babesia microti-like sp., 1 (0.9%); Borrelia bu

Subdivisions of the auditory midbrain (n. mesencephalicus lateralis, pars dorsalis) in zebra finches using calcium-binding protein immunocytochemistry.

The midbrain nucleus mesencephalicus lateralis pars dorsalis (MLd) is thought to be the avian homologue of the central nucleus of the mammalian inferior colliculus. As such, it is a major relay in the ascending auditory pathway of all birds and in songbirds mediates the auditory feedback necessary for the learning and maintenance of song. To clarify the organization of MLd, we applied three calcium binding protein antibodies to tissue sections from the brains of adult male and female zebra finches. The staining patterns resulting from the application of parvalbumin, calbindin and calretinin an

Middle age, a key time point for changes in birdsong and human voice.

Voice changes caused by natural aging and neurodegenerative diseases are prevalent in the aging population and diminish quality of life. Most treatments involve behavioral interventions that target the larynx because of a limited understanding of central brain mechanisms. The songbird offers a unique entry point into studying age-related changes in vocalizations because of a well-characterized neural circuitry for song that shares homology to human vocal control areas. Previously we established a translational dictionary for evaluating acoustic features of birdsong in the context of human voic
