Sound localization is essential for insect survival, enabling them to pinpoint predators and conspecifics. However, their minute size hinders the use of inter-aural time or intensity differences, a strategy employed by mammals for localizing sound. In this study, we numerically demonstrate that tree cricket hearing systems can act as an interferometer to support sound localization by first splitting the sound wave into two parts, sending one wave to an anterior tympanic membrane and sending the second to a posterior tympanic membrane. The membranes then carry the split waves to a common point,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recently, more patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) have been undergoing cochlear implantation. We review recent studies and case reports to provide an overview of the efficacy of cochlear implants to rehabilitate patients with SSD with regards to sound localization, speech discrimination, and tinnitus suppression.
RECENT FINDINGS: There are a growing number of studies evaluating the effect of cochlear implantation for rehabilitation of the deficits associated with SSD over the past several years as more centers offer this treatment modality to patients with SSD. Altho

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess three-dimensional (3D) spatial hearing abilities in reaching space of children and adolescents fitted with bilateral cochlear implants (BCI). The study also investigated the impact of spontaneous head movements on sound localization abilities.
DESIGN: BCI children (N = 18, aged between 8 and 17) and age-matched normal-hearing (NH) controls (N = 18) took part in the study. Tests were performed using immersive virtual reality equipment that allowed control over visual information and initial eye position, as well as real-time 3D motion tracking of

BACKGROUND: Binaural hearing is crucial for spatial auditory perception, including sound localization. Cochlear implants (CIs) are commonly used in children with congenital deafness to support binaural auditory development, but the extent to which they facilitate effective localization remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact of CIs on binaural functional auditory development and sound localization in children with congenital deafness, considering factors such as age at implantation, hearing experience, and CI laterality.
METHODS: Thirty-eight CI-assisted children (aged 4-

Transient postictal behavioral impairments in patients with epilepsy provide clues to seizure localization, but no attempt has been made previously to study the localization/lateralization value of postseizure motor disturbances in experimental models of epilepsy. The present study investigated relation of postictal motor deficit to seizure localization in the rat model of sound-induced reflex epilepsy. Sound-induced motor seizures started with a focal brainstem seizure (running) and progressed to a secondarily generalized seizure. Depending on innate or acquired seizure susceptibility of rats

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To assess whether early, significant improvements in sound source localization observed in cochlear implant (CI) recipients with normal hearing (NH) in the contralateral ear are maintained after 5 years of CI use.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, repeated measures study.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from a sample of CI + NH listeners (n = 20) who received their device as part of a prospective clinical trial investigating outcomes of CI use for adult cases of single-sided deafness. Sound source localization was assessed annually after the clinical trial endpoint (1-ye

The capacity of the auditory system to extract spatial information relies principally on the detection and interpretation of binaural cues, i.e., differences in the time of arrival or level of the sound between the two ears. In this review, we consider the effects of unilateral or asymmetric hearing loss on spatial hearing, with a focus on the adaptive changes in the brain that may help to compensate for an imbalance in input between the ears. Unilateral hearing loss during development weakens the brain's representation of the deprived ear, and this may outlast the restoration of function in t

Auditory neglect, defined as inattention to stimuli within the left hemispace, is mostly reported in association with left ear extinction in dichotic listening. However, it remains disputed as to how far dichotic extinction reflects a primary attentional deficit and is thus appropriate for the diagnosis of auditory neglect. We report here on four patients who presented left ear extinction in dichotic listening following right unilateral hemispheric lesions. Auditory spatial attention was assessed with two additional tasks: (i) diotic test by means of interaural time differences (ITDs), simulat

The focus of this study is auditory localization. Based on wave mechanics and structural mechanics, we analyze the sound field encircling external ear and the function of the soft tissues in middle ear respectively. And then, with the help of two rules, some details of the generation of spatial hearing are revealed. For auditory direction perception, three semicircular canals work as the reference coordinate system, and the cues are the direction of the concentrated force acting on tympanic membrane and the synchronous stress state. For the distance perception, because the distance information

The midbrain map of auditory space commands sound-orienting responses in barn owls. Owls precisely localize sounds in frontal space but underestimate the direction of peripheral sound sources. This bias for central locations was proposed to be adaptive to the decreased reliability in the periphery of sensory cues used for sound localization by the owl. Understanding the neural pathway supporting this biased behavior provides a means to address how adaptive motor commands are implemented by neurons. Here we find that the sensory input for sound direction is weighted by its reliability in premot

OBJECTIVES: We performed an evaluation of the audiological and subjective benefits of the bone-anchored hearing aid (Baha) as a device for transcranial routing of sound (Baha CROS) in 56 patients with unilateral inner ear deafness.
METHODS: We performed a prospective clinical follow-up study in a tertiary referral center. Previously reported results of 29 patients were supplemented with a second series of 30 patients with unilateral inner ear deafness; 3 patients dropped out during the evaluation. Audiometric measurements were taken before and after Baha CROS fitting. Subjective benefits were

In recent years, cochlear implants (CIs) have been provided in growing numbers to people with not only bilateral deafness but also to people with unilateral hearing loss, at times in order to alleviate tinnitus. This study presents audiological data from 15 adult participants (ages 48 ± 12 years) with single sided deafness. Results are presented from 9/15 adults, who received a CI (SSD-CI) in the deaf ear and were tested in Acoustic or Acoustic + CI hearing modes, and 6/15 adults who are planning to receive a CI, and were tested in the unilateral condition only. Testing included (1) audiometri

Precise temporal coding in auditory nerve fibers is crucial for sound localization and listening in noise. However, at higher sound levels, typical of everyday listening situations, temporal coding to the stimulus envelope is poor in fibers of the on-frequency channel, i.e., those tuned to the carrier stimulus. We predict that changes in cochlear gain improve temporal coding of the stimulus envelope differentially across frequency channels. Both auditory nerve fiber recordings (in Mongolian gerbils of either sex) and human psychophysics confirm that weak temporal coding at higher levels is imp

In nine patients with unilateral deafness and normal hearing in the contralateral ear, measurements of sound localization and speech perception were obtained before intervention, with a conventional contralateral routing of sound (CROS) hearing aid and later with a bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) implanted in the deaf ear. Sound localization did not show any differences between the three conditions. Speech perception using short, everyday sentences showed a reduction in the head-shadow effect of 2 dB for both the conventional CROS hearing aid and the BAHA in comparison to the unaided conditio

This study aimed to characterize binaural hearing abilities with bone conduction stimulation in simulated conductive hearing loss. Bone conduction hearing devices (BCDs) are a common method of rehabilitating conductive hearing loss. However, little is known about the access these devices provide to binaural cues. To study the ability of BCDs to restore access to binaural cues in conductive loss, normal hearing listeners were plugged unilaterally and bilaterally and localization ability was assessed using a non-surgical BCD attached to the mastoid/s via an adhesive (MED-EL, Corp). The results d
