Postlingual deaf speech and the role of audition in speech production: comments on Waldstein's paper [R.S. Waldstein, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 88, 2099-2114 (1990)].

Using acoustic analysis techniques, Waldstein [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 88, 2099-2114 (1990] reported abnormal speech findings in postlingual deaf speakers. She interpreted her findings to suggest that auditory feedback is important in motor speech control. However, it is argued here that Waldstein's interpretation may be unwarranted without addressing the possibility of neurologic deficits (e.g., dysarthria) as confounding (or even primary) causes of the abnormal speech in her subjects.

Assessment of the dynamics of vocal fold contact from the electroglottogram: data from normal male subjects.

Electroglottographic (EGG) and acoustic records from 10 normal men prolonging the vowel /a/ at 60-68 dB, 70-78 dB, and 80-88 dB SPL were obtained. "Contact quotient" (EGG duty cycle) was shown to vary directly with vocal SPL. The mean contact quotient was 0.57 (SD = 0.07) and varied on the order of 1% over the course of a given phonation. "Contact index", a metric of EGG symmetry, also tended to vary with SPL. Consistent with previous qualitative descriptions of EGG morphology in modal register voice, the contact index averaged -0.52 (SD = 0.08), indicating that the EGG "closing phase" represe

Dynamic information in the identification and discrimination of vowels.

The dynamic theory of vowel perception emphasizes the importance of the consonant transitions in CVC syllables to the identification of the vowel itself. However, the dynamic theory is relatively vague in terms of what perceptual processes may be involved and it says nothing about the role of auditory and/or phonetic memory for such 'dynamic events'. The present study created three synthetic [iota]-[epsilon] continua consisting of a [bVb] full-syllable continuum, a silent-center continuum (which had over 72% of the medial vowel replaced by silence) and an isolated vowel continuum to specifical

Open-source real-time passive acoustic tracking of beaked whales for low-power devices.

Real-time tracking of multiple underwater sound sources remains a challenge in passive acoustics, particularly for low-power autonomous systems. Many existing tracking methods rely on post-processing or computationally intensive techniques, limiting their applicability to embedded devices. To overcome these limitations, we present a time-difference-of-arrival-based tracking algorithm that tracks multiple sources in the direction-of-arrival (DOA) domain. A key architectural feature of the method is the decoupling of continuous per-frame DOA estimation from source enumeration, enabling these pro

Detecting Suspected Pump Thrombosis in Left Ventricular Assist Devices via Acoustic Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) fail in up to 10% of patients due to the development of pump thrombosis. Remote monitoring of patients with LVADs can enable early detection and, subsequently, treatment and prevention of pump thrombosis. We assessed whether acoustical signals measured on the chest of patients with LVADs, combined with machine learning algorithms, can be used for detecting pump thrombosis. METHODS: 13 centrifugal pump (HVAD) recipients were enrolled in the study. When hospitalized for suspected pump thrombosis, clinical data and acoustical recordings were obt

Spectral super-resolution for Parkinson's voice via representation-level methods under mixed-reality acquisition.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Voice is a practical remote biomarker for Parkinson's disease (PD), but real-world capture often yields low-resolution time-frequency inputs that under-resolve diagnostically salient microstructure. In this controlled empirical comparison, we test whether spectrogram super-resolution (SR) at the feature level performed inside the model rather than via waveform resynthesis improves PD vs. healthy control (HC) discrimination under realistic constraints. METHODS: Speech was recorded with a Microsoft HoloLens 2 using a standardized mixed-reality (MR) protocol from 161 s

Identification and classification of repeated whistle types from free-ranging rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis).

Acoustic communication is vital for marine mammals. Many delphinids rely on frequency-modulated tonal signals – known as whistles – used during social communication. Among these, individually distinctive “signature whistles” have been extensively studied in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) over the past 60 years. These stereotyped whistles convey individual identity and motivational information. Recent studies have identified similar stereotyped whistles in other delphinids, including a rehabilitated rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis). However, the function, occurrence, time–fre

The acoustic characteristics of Swedish vowels.

The Swedish vowel space is relatively densely populated with 21 categories that differ in quality and quantity. Existing descriptions of the entire space rest on recordings made in the late 1990s or earlier, while recent work in general has focused on subsets of the space. The present paper reports on static and dynamic acoustic analyses of the entire vowel space using a recently released database of h-VOWEL-d words (SwehVd). The results highlight the importance of static and dynamic spectral and temporal cues for Swedish vowel category distinction. The first two formants and vowel duration ar

Vocalization with semi-occluded airways is favorable for optimizing sound production.

Vocalization in mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians occurs with airways that have wide openings to free-space for efficient sound radiation, but sound is also produced with occluded or semi-occluded airways that have small openings to free-space. It is hypothesized that pressures produced inside the airway with semi-occluded vocalizations have an overall widening effect on the airway. This overall widening then provides more opportunity to produce wide-narrow contrasts along the airway for variation in sound quality and loudness. For human vocalization described here, special emphasis is

Manipulations of sensory experiences during development reveal mechanisms underlying vocal learning biases in zebra finches.

Biological predispositions in learning can bias and constrain the cultural evolution of social and communicative behaviors (e.g., speech and birdsong), and lead to the emergence of behavioral and cultural "universals." For example, surveys of laboratory and wild populations of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) document consistent patterning of vocal elements ("syllables") with respect to their acoustic properties (e.g., duration, mean frequency). Furthermore, such universal patterns are also produced by birds that are experimentally tutored with songs containing randomly sequenced syllables

Five members of a mixed-sex group of bottlenose dolphins share a stereotyped whistle contour in addition to maintaining their individually distinctive signature whistles.

Most commonly, animal communication systems are driven by shared call repertoires, with some individual distinctiveness encoded as a byproduct of voice cues. We provide evidence that bottlenose dolphins produce both individually distinctive whistles, and a shared whistle type. A stereotyped whistle contour (termed the group whistle) is shared by five bottlenose dolphins that have lived, worked, and traveled together for at least 21 years. These five dolphins are members of a group of eight dolphins that work as a specialized team for the Navy Marine Mammal Program. Each dolphin is routinely re

The contribution of supraglottic laryngeal adjustments to voice: phonetic evidence from Arabic.

In this study, we provide nasendoscopic observations illustrating phonetic contrasts in Arabic that require supraglottic laryngeal adjustments, and demonstrate how the laryngeal constrictor mechanism contributes to phonetic descriptions of phonation. Arabic has two pharyngeal consonants (voiceless and voiced). We show, among others, that these two consonants possess auditory features of whisperiness and creaky voice, respectively, and are always produced with supraglottic constriction similar but more marked than during whispery or creaky [i]. However, during modal [i], the epilaryngeal space

Diversity in sound pressure levels and estimated active space of resident killer whale vocalizations.

Signal source intensity and detection range, which integrates source intensity with propagation loss, background noise and receiver hearing abilities, are important characteristics of communication signals. Apparent source levels were calculated for 819 pulsed calls and 24 whistles produced by free-ranging resident killer whales by triangulating the angles-of-arrival of sounds on two beamforming arrays towed in series. Levels in the 1-20 kHz band ranged from 131 to 168 dB re 1 microPa at 1 m, with differences in the means of different sound classes (whistles: 140.2+/-4.1 dB; variable calls: 14

Testosterone implants alter the frequency range of zebra finch songs.

To investigate whether changes in testosterone alter the frequency range in which a zebra finch produces song, we assigned male zebra finches to two groups, one of which received testosterone implants and the other empty silastic capsule implants. We then recorded songs up to 52 weeks after the surgery and measured frequency changes in the fundamental frequencies of arbitrarily chosen harmonic stacks in the songs of birds in either group. We found statistically significant decreases after 5 weeks in the songs of the testosterone-treated birds. No changes were found in the fundamental frequenci

Inflation of the esophagus and vocal tract filtering in ring doves.

Ring doves vocalize with their beaks and nostrils closed, exhaling into inflatable chambers in the head and neck region. The source sound produced at the syrinx contains a fundamental frequency with prominent second and third harmonic overtones, but these harmonics are filtered out of the emitted signal. We show by cineradiography that the upper esophagus, oral and nasal cavities collect the expired air during vocalization and that the inflated esophagus becomes part of the suprasyringeal vocal tract. The level of the second and third harmonics, relative to the fundamental frequency (f(0)), is

Relationship between transglottal pressure and fundamental frequency of phonation, with effects of dehydration produced by atropine, in healthy volunteers.

We investigated the effects of the intravenous injection of atropine sulfate on the relationship between the fundamental frequency of phonation (F0) and the magnitude of F0 change per unit change in transglottal pressure (dF/dP) in 4 healthy male volunteers. Before the injection of atropine, we observed a nonlinear or V-shaped relationship between dF/dP and F0. After the injection, the values for dF/dP were reduced at a lower F0, whereas the values were unchanged at a higher F0. The results support our hypothesis that the relationship between dF/dP and F0 reflects adjustments in the length and

Incoordination of the phonation start in individuals with balbuties.

We studied the effect occurring in close proximity before the phonation start and give an account of the microdramas taking place upon the glottis immediately before the phonation start in a group of individuals suffering from balbuties (60 children and adolescents from 9 to 14 years of age) and an equally large control group suffering from no such speech defect. In the group of children and adolescents with balbuties only less than 4% of the cases showed undisturbed regular phonation starts, whereas in the control group it was almost as much as 90%.
