INTRODUCTION: Inhalation of hydrazine or hydrazine-derivative (for example, monomethylhydrazine) vapors during spaceflight operations remains a risk to crew and ground support personnel. Here we sought to provide an evidence-based approach to inform acute clinical treatment guidelines for inhalational exposures during a noncatastrophic contingency spaceflight recovery scenario.METHODS: A review of published literature was conducted concerning hydrazine/hydrazine-derivative exposure and clinical sequelae. Priority was given to studies that described inhalation though studies of alternative rout

Motion sickness remains a persistent problem in spaceflight. The present review summarizes available knowledge concerning the incidence and onset of space motion sickness and aspects of the physiology of motion sickness. Proposed etiological factors in the elicitation of space motion sickness are evaluated including fluid shifts, head movements, visual orientation illusions, Coriolis cross-coupling stimulation, and otolith asymmetries. Current modes of treating space motion sickness are described. Theoretical models and proposed ground-based paradigms for understanding and studying space motio

One of the important factors in outer space is the absence of gravity (OG). During longterm missions, this factor is responsible for the larger number of anatomical and physiological changes that astronauts experience. The cardiovascular system undergoes these changes with severe intensity, which is part of an adaptation process to the new environmental conditions. The modifications observed in both the anatomy of the cardiovascular system and its hemodynamics occur in two phases. The first phase begins when the astronauts enter into Earth orbit or in interplanetary trajectory and extends unti

On the basis of an examination of the physical characteristics of noises accompanying the performance of flying vehicles, experimental investigations of the effects of acoustic energy in a wide range of intensity and exposure time on the human body were carried out. The findings were used to develop the standards "noise intensity--time of continuous exposure and "noise intensity--class of antinoise", taking into account corrections for the protective effect of antinoise. This allowed a more substantiated approach to the standardization of work in an environment of high intensity noise. Althoug

Cytogenetic changes in cultures of blood lymphocytes from 37 cosmonauts returned from space flights of varying duration were analyzed. Prolonged stay in space was shown to increase numbers of stable and unstable chromosomal aberrations. Frequency of dicentric and centric rings depends on flight duration, as well as values of accumulated dose from and dose rate of space radiation. Egress into open space leads to an additional growth in the number of chromosomal aberrations. It was found that frequency of chromosomal aberrations in blood lymphocytes remains altered even after several years of co

Spaceflight is a special abiotic stress, the biological effect mechanism of which on contemporary rice has been clarified, However, its effect on offspring rice was still unclear. In order to understand the response mechanism of F2 generation plants to space flight, this study used SJ-10 recoverable satellite to carry DN423 rice seeds for 12.5 days in orbit flight. After returning to the ground, the plants were then planted to F2 generation to explore the biological effect mechanism. Our research showed that in the F2 generation of TLS, the rice plant height of the space flight group increased

In the evolving field of advanced biopreservation technologies, the development of suspended animation (SA) is inspired by real-world challenges. In the context of space exploration, SA is seen as a solution to enable humans to undertake missions far beyond low Earth orbit, including routine travel to other planets in our solar system and beyond. While work on the socio-ethical and legal implications (ELSI) of space exploration continues to evolve, NASA has committed to make ethics a priority issue, making this a fruitful field for further examination.

NASA Medical Standards for space flight (JSC 11570) specifically disqualify any flight crew member who is pregnant. A variety of factors led to this recommendation including the effects of radiation exposure on fetal development. Additionally, other concerns such as toxic chemical exposure, microgravity, pregnancy accidents, plus alterations in breathing gas mixtures and decompression preclude pregnant flight crew members from missions in the foreseeable future. The future of space travel will require reproduction beyond the confines of earth's environment. This makes it all the more necessary

INTRODUCTION: Performance of medical procedures in spaceflight beyond low Earth orbit (LEO) requires novel solutions to replace real-time ground support, which is hampered by growing communication latencies as distance from Earth increases. The Autonomous Medical Officer Support (AMOS) Software Technology Demonstrations on the International Space Station (ISS) trialed a novel software tool that shifts the emphasis from pre-flight training and real-time remote guidance (current ISS paradigm) to a new standard of multidimensional in-flight just-in-time instruction. The AMOS platform is a skill m

The International Mars Prospecting Ride-Share System (IMPRESS) is presented here as a scalable, democratized, and low-cost mission architecture for distributed measurements on the martian surface and in the shallow subsurface. IMPRESS is intended to prospect on Mars in advance of sample return and human exploration. Its primary objective is to survey Mars for extant life, but it also supports geophysical, soil chemistry, resource, and landing-site risk assessments. Instead of relying on soft landers and drilling systems, IMPRESS deploys swarms of planetary penetrators that use descent kinetic

Waste management aboard the International Space Station is a critical challenge due to limited space, microgravity, and continuous waste generation. This manuscript explores biotechnological strategies that convert waste into valuable resources, supporting sustainability and reducing reliance on Earth. Biowaste decomposition transforms organic waste into nutrients and biogas, while regenerative life support systems recycle carbon, water, and minerals. Biomining enables microbes to extract rare elements and upcycle electronic waste into mission-critical metals. Engineered extremophiles demonstr

Aging is a complex biological and societal challenge, where modest advances can yield substantial clinical and economic benefits. While model organisms have uncovered key mechanisms of aging, their physiological relevance to humans remains limited. Astronauts offer a uniquely informative human model: despite being healthy and highly selected, they exhibit many hallmarks of aging and experience comparable declines in cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, cognitive and immune function-often on accelerated timelines. These changes are largely driven by four core exposures of the space environment: mic

Spaceflight presents several unique challenges for the diagnosis and management of in-flight ocular trauma. Constrained medical resources, microgravity, and delayed access to advanced medical care require novel and unique approaches to ocular trauma. The Ocular Trauma Score (OTS), an evidence-based clinical tool, aids in establishing a prognosis for ocular injuries and offers a method of informed triage and management. As governmental space agencies and private space companies (e.g., SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic) rapidly increase the number and length of human spaceflight missions,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) encompasses a unique constellation of neuro-ocular findings in astronauts, including optic disc edema (ODE), globe flattening, chorioretinal folds, and hyperopic refractive shift. Although there are numerous neuro-ocular findings in SANS, the purpose of this review is to describe the novel, emerging concepts of the pathogenesis for the ODE specifically in SANS.
RECENT FINDINGS: While the initial hypotheses on the pathogenesis of ODE in SANS focused on possible elevated intracranial pressures (i.e., papilledema), the most p

Travel to space has overcome unprecedent technological challenges and this has resulted in transfer of these technological results on Earth to better our lives. Health technology, medical devices, and research advancements in human biology are the first beneficiaries of this transfer. The real breakthrough came with the International Space Station, which endorsed multidisciplinary international scientific collaborations and boosted the research on pathophysiological adaptation of astronauts to life on space. These studies evidenced that life in space appeared to have exposed the astronauts to

Astronauts are exposed to an austere and constantly changing environment during space travel. To respond to these rapid environmental changes, high levels of dynamic visual acuity (DVA) are required. DVA is the ability to visualize objects that are in motion, or with head movement and has previously been shown to decrease significantly following spaceflight. Decreased DVA can potentially impact astronauts while performing mission critical tasks and drive space motion sickness. In this paper, we suggest that DVA assessment during spaceflight and during G-transitions should be considered to help

Viruses constitute a significant part of the human microbiome, so wherever humans go, viruses are brought with them, even on space missions. In this mini review, we focus on the International Space Station (ISS) as the only current human habitat in space that has a diverse range of viral genera that infect microorganisms from bacteria to eukaryotes. Thus, we have reviewed the literature on the physical conditions of space habitats that have an impact on both virus transmissibility and interaction with their host, which include UV radiation, ionizing radiation, humidity, and microgravity. Also,
