A comparison of the nauseogenic potential of low-frequency vertical versus horizontal linear oscillation.

The aim of this study was to compare the nauseogenic potential of low-frequency linear motion in the Earth-vertical versus the Earth-horizontal plane, delivered through the same Z-axis of the head and body. Twelve subjects were challenged with linear motion (0.3 Hz, 1.8 ms-2 rms) through the same head and body Z-axis in the Earth-vertical (sitting upright) versus horizontal (lying on the back), while either performing a continuous visual search task or with their eyes closed. Each subject completed the four conditions on a Latin square design with sessions spaced 1 week apart at the same time

The role of vision in sensory integration models for predicting motion perception and sickness.

Users of automated vehicles will engage in other activities and take their eyes off the road, making them prone to motion sickness. To resolve this, the current paper validates models predicting sickness in response to motion and visual conditions. We validate published models of vestibular and visual sensory integration that have been used for predicting motion sickness through sensory conflict. We use naturalistic driving data and laboratory motion (and vection) paradigms, such as sinusoidal translation and rotation at different frequencies, Earth-Vertical Axis Rotation, Off-Vertical Axis Ro

Psychophysiological assessment and correction of spatial disorientation during simulated Orion spacecraft re-entry.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has identified a potential risk of spatial disorientation, motion sickness, and degraded performance to astronauts during re-entry and landing of the proposed Orion crew vehicle. The purpose of this study was to determine if a physiological training procedure, Autogenic-Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE), can mitigate these adverse effects. Fourteen men and six women were assigned to two groups (AFTE, no-treatment Control) matched for motion sickness susceptibility and gender. All subjects received a standard rotating chair test to determ

Promethazine as a motion sickness treatment: impact on human performance and mood states.

PURPOSE: Intramuscular (i.m.) injections of promethazine in 25 mg or 50 mg dosages are commonly used to treat space motion sickness in astronauts. The present study examined the effects of i.m. injections of promethazine on performance, mood states, and motion sickness in humans. METHODS: Subjects were 12 men, mean age 36 + 3.1, who participated in 1 training day and 3 treatment conditions: a 25-mg injection of promethazine, a 50-mg injection of promethazine, and a placebo injection of sterile saline. Each condition, scheduled at 7-d intervals, required an 8-10-h day in which subjects were te

Effect of temporal relationship between respiration and body motion on motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effect controlling the phase of respiration on the development of nausea provoked by periodic motion at 0.2 Hz which is maximal for provocation of motion sickness. METHODS: Subjects were exposed to 60 degrees peak-peak, pitch backwards from upright motion while viewing a video of the environment with 180 degrees phase delay. Motion duration was a maximum of 30 min and frequency was set to match individuals' spontaneous respiration. Conditions were: A, spontaneous breathing; B, inspiration cued to begin when head-down; C, inspiration cued to begin when u

Treatment of motion sickness in parabolic flight with buccal scopolamine.

Treatment of acute motion sickness induced by parabolic flight with a preparation of scopolamine placed in the buccal pouch was investigated. Twenty-one subjects flew aboard a KC-135 aircraft operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) which performed parabolic maneuvers resulting in periods of 0-g, 1-g, and 1.8-g. Each subject flew once with a tablet containing scopolamine and once with a placebo in a random order, crossover design. Signs and symptoms of motion sickness were systematically recorded during each parabola by an investigator who was blind to the content o

A ground-based animal model of space adaptation syndrome.

We examined the effect and aftereffect of acute or chronic load of hypergravity produced by an animal centrifuge, on pica (that is, kaolin intake) in the rat as an index of motion sickness. Although the degree of pica initially induced by acute or chronic hypergravity was not different, the rate of decline of increased kaolin intake over poststimulus days was different. Pica after a 1-h load of 2g decreased rapidly. On the other hand, pica lasted 3 days after a 48-h load of 2g. These findings suggest that the aftereffects of chronic hypergravity application on pica are due to motion sickness i

A comprehensive exploration of motion sickness process analysis from EEG signal and virtual reality.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Virtual reality motion sickness is a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of virtual reality technology. Current virtual reality motion sickness detection methods using EEG signals often fail to identify comprehensive neuro-markers and lack generalizability across multiple subjects. METHODS: To address this issue, we analyzed the pre- and post-induction phases of virtual reality motion sickness, as well as the induction process, from multiple domain features. The features were extracted from time domain, frequency domain, spatial domain and Riemann space ac

Use of promethazine to hasten adaptation to provocative motion.

In an earlier study, the authors found that severely motion sick individuals could be greatly relieved of their symptoms by intramuscular injections of promethazine (50 mg) or scopolamine (.5 mg). Comparable 50-mg injections of promethazine also have been found effective in alleviating symptoms of space motion sickness. The concern has risen, however, that such drugs may delay or retard the acquisition of adaptation to stressful environments. In the current study, we controlled arousal using a mental arithmetic task and precisely equated the exposure history (number of head movements during ro

[Seasickness].

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the physiological basis, clinical picture and treatment opportunities of motion sickness. Motion sickness can occur when sensory inputs from body orientation and movements in space contradict or differ from those predicted from experience. In that case disturbing symptoms can occur when a person is exposed to unfamiliar movement or perceived movement in the environment. Best known is when this occurs at sea, referred to as sea sickness. Despite progress in the technology and comfort of modern sea transit and transportation (ships, planes a

Rapid eye movement during sleep considered as nystagmus.

Based on supportive evidence, it is proposed in this paper that rapid eye movements during paradoxical sleep actually represent nystagmus, the latter due to the occurrence of conflicting perceptions of bodily position in space. During rapid eye movements in sleep, the brain's perception of bodily position in a dream is opposed to the sensory perception of the dreamer's sleeping position. The split in perception triggers nystagmus, a physiological mechanism known to accompany motion sickness and other waking forms of spatial sense distortion. Supportive evidence from studies on motion sickness,

Treatment of severe motion sickness with antimotion sickness drug injections.

This report concerns the use of intramuscular injections of scopolamine, promethazine, and dramamine to treat severely motion sick individuals participating in parabolic flight experiments. The findings indicate that a majority of individuals received benefit from 50-mg injections of promethazine or 0.5mg-injections of scopolamine. By contrast, 50-mg injections of dramamine and 25-mg injections of promethazine were nonbeneficial. The use of antimotion drug injections for treating space motion sickness is discussed.

Microcapsule-gel formulation of promethazine HCl for controlled nasal delivery: a motion sickness medication.

The current method of choice for astronauts to treat space motion sickness is an intra-muscular injection of promethazine hydrochloride (PMZ HCl) which is invasive and causes considerable local irritation and discomfort at the site of injection. Intra-nasal delivery is considered a feasible alternative route for administration of medications to treat space motion sickness. The purpose of this research is to develop a PMZ HCl formulation that can be administered intra-nasally without irritation (i.e. leukocyte infiltration) in the nasal epithelium when dosed at PMZ HCl concentrations greater th

Intravestibular Balance and Motion Sickness.

INTRODUCTION: A theory is presented to explain the major findings regarding motion sickness and to synthetize current theories concerning its etiology. The theory proposes that an imbalance in the output of the two major organs of the labyrinth-favoring the semicircular canals over the otolith organs-is responsible for most instances of motion sickness as experienced in terrestrial and microgravity environments. METHODS: Strengths and limitations of current theories are first outlined before the different roles of the canals and otoliths in the genesis of motion sickness symptoms are describe

Motion sickness in the squirrel monkey.

Because it is of the same taxonomic order as man, the squirrel monkey has been introduced as a nonhuman primate model for the study of such aspects of motion and space sickness as susceptibility, prevention, treatment, and neural mechanisms. In this study on susceptibility, the specific aims were to examine the effects of combined vertical rotation and horizontal acceleration, phenotype, sex, visual cues, morning and afternoon testing, and repeated test exposures on incidence, frequency, and latency of emetic responses. The highest emetic incidence of 89%, with an emetic frequency of 2.0, duri

Comparative measurement of visual stability in Earth and cosmic space.

Three theories have been suggested as to the cause of space motion sickness: 1) eye and vestibular sensory mismatch, 2) abnormal shift of body fluids producing increased intracranial pressure and 3) pre-warning signals for unpleasant physical situations by self-produced neurotoxic substances released in the body. We are interested in the possible functional disabilities/incongruities of eye, head and body movements in 0-G. Space motion sickness might be explained from the viewpoint of lack of coordination of the movements of the eye and head. It is important to ascertain the significance of gr
