Effect of inositol treatment on the behavior of rhesus monkeys: preliminary results.

1. The effects of inositol (20 g/day, oral) on spatial learning and spontaneous home-cage behavior of four Rhesus monkeys, were studied in a crossover design. 2. Results indicate no marked inositol effect on learning, memory, or behavior. There was a suggestion of an effect of chronic inositol in reducing cage-induced repetitive behavior as indicated by increased switching between modes of behavior, and reduction in length of longest behavioral about. Furthermore inositol may increase time spent in environmentally- rather than self-oriented behavior. 3. Previous behavioral studies of inositol

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and microglial activity are associated with distinct postoperative behavioral changes in rats.

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has recently gained interest as a marker for neuroinflammation and associated behavioral dysfunction. We aimed to explore the link between NGAL and behavior in a rat model of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). Material collected in two previous studies on POCD was analyzed and associated with outcomes for exploratory behavior and spatial learning. Plasma and hippocampal NGAL and microglial activity were analyzed. Pearson's correlations and backward linear regression were performed to study the associations between behavioral parameters

Allocentric spatial representations dominate when switching between real and virtual worlds.

After removing a virtual reality headset, people can be surprised to find that they are facing a different direction than expected. Here, we investigated if people can maintain spatial representations of one environment while immersed in another. In the first three experiments, stationary participants were asked to point to previously seen targets in one environment, either the real world or a virtual environment, while in the other environment. We varied the amount of misalignment between the two environments (detectable or undetectable), the virtual environment itself (lab or kitchen), and t

Looking for the compass in a case of developmental topographical disorientation: a behavioral and neuroimaging study.

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) is the presence of navigational deficits in the context of normal intellectual ability and in the absence of any perinatal, neurological, or psychiatric disorder. As only three cases of DTD have been fully described thus far, we are still unable to draw definitive conclusions about its nature and relationship with other visuospatial competencies, such as mental rotation. The case of Mr. L.A., a 38-year-old man with no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders, sheds some light on these open questions. A neuropsychological assessment inclu

Mice Develop Efficient Strategies for Foraging and Navigation Using Complex Natural Stimuli.

The ability to shift between multiple decision-making strategies during natural behavior allows animals to strike a balance between flexibility and efficiency. We investigated odor-guided navigation by mice to understand how decision-making strategies are balanced during a complex natural behavior. Mice navigated to odor sources in an open arena using naturally fluctuating airborne odor cues as their positions were recorded precisely in real time. When mice had limited prior experience of source locations, their search behavior was consistent with a gradient ascent algorithm that utilized dire

Variability of the approach phase of landing echolocating Greater Mouse-eared bats.

The approach phase of landing vespertilionid bats ends with a group of calls, which either consists of buzz I alone or buzz I and buzz II. To understand the possible role of buzz II, we trained Myotis myotis to land on a vertical grid, and compared the flight and echolocation behavior during approach in trials with and without buzz II. During the approach, we did not find any differences in the echolocation behavior until the end of buzz I which indicated whether buzz II was emitted or not. However, bats flying from the periphery of the flight channel, such that they had to make a small turn a

Wildfire exposure analysis on the national forests in the Pacific Northwest, USA.

We analyzed wildfire exposure for key social and ecological features on the national forests in Oregon and Washington. The forests contain numerous urban interfaces, old growth forests, recreational sites, and habitat for rare and endangered species. Many of these resources are threatened by wildfire, especially in the east Cascade Mountains fire-prone forests. The study illustrates the application of wildfire simulation for risk assessment where the major threat is from large and rare naturally ignited fires, versus many previous studies that have focused on risk driven by frequent and small

Contribution of the hippocampus to performance on the traveling salesperson problem in rats.

The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is an optimization problem in which the subject attempts to find the shortest possible route that passes through a set of fixed locations exactly once. The TSP is used in cognitive and behavioral research to study problem solving and spatial navigation. While the TSP has been studied in some depth from this perspective, the biological mechanisms underlying the behavior have not yet been explored. The hippocampus is a structure in the brain that is known to be involved in tasks that require spatial memory. Because the TSP requires spatial problem solving, we

Object and event representation in 6 1/2-month-old infants.

Two experiments were conducted in which infants had to use remembered knowledge of auditory-visual events to guide their reaching and grasping. The events involved a ball falling noisily through a tube and coming to rest at 1 of 2 locations, with either resting site specified by distinctive auditory information. The events were presented initially in the light and then in the dark to determine whether infants would remember and use the auditory cues when they could no longer see where the ball fell. In both experiments, infants' reaching behavior was initiated and carried out after the sound e

A novel computerized system for analyzing motor and social behavior in groups of animals.

We present here the VMB Tracking System, a novel method for tracking locomotor activity, posture, thigmotactic scanning behavior and social interactions of up to eight animals at a time, at a high resolution (up to+/-0.1 mm). We used a commercially available computerized system that is considerably cheaper than other available methods. This system utilizes a basic personal computer controlling three transponders ('towers') fixed in space above the tested area, where animals as small as rats stroll freely in their normal habitat or in an experimental arena. Each tower emits infra-red (IR) pulse

Selective corticosteroid antagonists modulate specific aspects of spatial orientation learning.

Receptors for mineralocorticoids (MRs) and glucocorticoids (GRs) display a high concentration and distinct distribution in the hippocampus. The effects of corticosteroids on behavior mediated by central MRs and GRs were assessed in rats. Spatial navigation is considered to be a sensitive measure for hippocampal functioning. Removal of circulating corticosteroids (via adrenalectomy) impaired spatial learning. In intact rats, blockade of central MRs and GRs by intracerebroventricular injection of selective MR and GR antagonists influenced different aspects of spatial learning. The analysis of th

The sectored foraging field: a novel design to quantify spatial strategies, learning, memory, and emotion.

Although Norway rats are naturally gregarious, males typically live alone at some point during adulthood. Different social ecologies often require different learning strategies and also modulate response to stressors and gonadal development. To measure effects of the social environment on the interaction between cognition and emotion during aging, we focused on a natural learning context and devised the sectored foraging field, a progressively difficult spatial navigation task. Here, we describe how this apparatus and protocol permits multiple learning strategies in a minimally stressful envir

Engineering programmable tumor microenvironment interactions through single-cell bioprinting of spatially defined cell microarrays.

Cancer evolution is increasingly understood as a byproduct of dynamic interactions between malignant cells and the surrounding tumor microenvironment, with local cellular neighborhoods serving as key regulators of disease-relevant behavior. While spatial biology studies of healthy and malignant tissues have revealed spatial features correlating with clinical outcomes, the mechanisms by which individual cell interactions propagate to shape cancer evolution remain difficult to resolve in native tissues. Here, we use single-cell bioprinting to engineer tumor microenvironment interactions through

Decoding Spatial Memory Retrieval in Cubical Space Using fMRI Signals.

The way spatial memory retrieval is represented in the brain remains unclear to date. Previous studies have displayed a hippocampus-centered navigation network using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis. There have been some studies on the representation of navigation behavior by signal distribution patterns, but only in the hippocampus and adjacent structures. In this study, we aimed to determine (1) the brain regions that represent information in both intensity and distribution patterns during spatial memory retrieval and (2) whether the patterns of neural responses represen

Vector-based navigation in desert ants: the significance of path-integration vectors.

In the longstanding discussion of whether insects, especially central place foragers such as bees and ants, use metric representations of their landmark surroundings (so-called "cognitive maps"), the ability to find novel shortcuts between familiar locations has been considered one of the most decisive proofs for the use of such maps. Here we show by channel-based field experiments that desert ants Cataglyphis can travel such shortcuts between locations (defined by memorized goal vectors) just on the basis of path integration. When trained to visit two spatially separated feeders A and B they

Idiosyncratic route-based memories in desert ants, Melophorus bagoti: how do they interact with path-integration vectors?

Individually foraging desert ants of central Australia, Melophorus bagoti, exhibit amazingly precise mechanisms of visual landmark guidance when navigating through cluttered environments. If trained to shuttle back and forth between the nest and a feeder, they establish habitual outbound and inbound routes, which guide them idiosyncratically across the natural maze of extended arrays of grass tussocks covering their foraging areas. The route-based memories that usually differ between outbound and inbound runs are acquired already during the first runs to the nest and feeder. If the ants are di

Comparative Evaluation of Desktop, Room-Scale, and Large-Space Co-Located Collaborative Virtual Reality in Immersive Training.

Large-space co-located collaborative virtual reality provides a training environment in which participants can move, communicate, and coordinate actions within a shared immersive space. However, evidence remains limited on whether this configuration improves spatial presence, team coordination, and learning engagement beyond desktop-based collaboration or distributed room-scale virtual reality. This study evaluated a single-center, three-arm experimental protocol involving 126 participants assigned to 42 three-person teams. Teams were randomized to desktop collaborative simulation, room-scale

Commercial hatchery practices have long-lasting effects on laying hens' spatial behaviour and health.

The commercial hatchery process is globally standardized and exposes billions of day-old layer chicks to stress every year. By alleviating this early stress, on-farm hatching is thought to improve animal welfare, yet little is known about its effects throughout production. This study compared welfare indicators and spatial behaviours during the laying period of hens hatched in an on-farm environment (OFH) to those hatched in a commercial hatchery and transferred at one day-old to a rearing barn (STAN). In particular, we assessed how OFH and TRAN hens differed in space-use and movement behaviou
