[Cerebral cytochrome oxidase monitoring by near infrared spectroscopy during selective cerebral perfusion].

To evaluate selective cerebral perfusion (SCP) for brain protection, the redox state of cytochrome oxidase (Cyt. aa3) in brain tissue were studied in 27 patients with thoracic aortic repair. The redox state of Cyt. aa3 was monitored by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) (OM-110, Shimazu). There were no significant changes in the Cyt. aa3 redox state in 13 (Group I), the oxidation state of Cyt. aa3 decreased then recovered to control levels in 12 (Group II), and the oxidation state decreased but did not recover in 2 patients (Group III). Postoperative cerebral damage was observed in 5 patients;

Near-infrared vibrational second harmonic generation: a new nonlinear interfacial vibrational spectroscopy.

Determining the bond anharmonicity constant (χeν̃e) and dissociation energy (De) at interfaces is challenging but important for understanding many fundamental physical and chemical processes. χeν̃e and De can be examined by studying overtone transitions in the near-infrared region. We used near-infrared vibrational second harmonic generation (NIR-vSHG), a new nonlinear spectroscopic technique, to study the overtone of the buried near-surface free OH at muscovite mica surfaces in air, and the CH stretch in chloroform and acetonitrile at alumina interfaces. NIR-vSHG offers distinct advantages ov

Video communication mitigate feelings of friendliness: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Friendliness is essential for the development of stable interpersonal relationships. Video communication is growing rapidly in popularity for initiating and maintaining personal relationships, but it is unknown if video communication is as effective as face-to-face communication for promoting friendliness. This study compared the development of subjective friendliness between video and face-to-face communication sessions and investigated the associated neural correlates. Thirty healthy same-sex pairs were recruited and randomly assigned to face-to-face (Face) and video communication (Video) gr

Superficial Fluctuations in Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy during Concurrent Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an optical imaging modality which, similar to fMRI, measures cerebral hemodynamics associated with neural activity. It has several advantages over fMRI, including low cost, portability, compatibility with metal or electrical medical implants, and ease of integration with electroencephalography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). However, fNIRS signal contains a number of confounding components. Physiological noises due to superficial absorption by the scalp and skull are present in all fNIRS data. Additionally, low-frequency oscil

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to Assess Covert Volitional Brain Activity in Intensive Care.

BACKGROUND: Detecting covert consciousness in unresponsive patients is challenging. Although functional magnetic resonance imaging and advanced electroencephalography paradigms can identify volitional brain activity, the limited accessibility of these technologies necessitates alternative approaches. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy may provide a portable solution in the intensive care unit. We assessed the feasibility of functional near-infrared spectroscopy with verbal motor commands to detect volitional brain activity in acute disorders of consciousness (DoC). METHODS: Functional near

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Schizophrenia Research: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions.

This review comprehensively examines the application and progress of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in schizophrenia research. Schizophrenia is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by extensive dysfunction in the prefrontal-limbic system and dysregulation of brain network connectivity. fNIRS, with its advantages of high portability, resistance to motion interference, and non-invasive real-time monitoring of cerebral hemodynamic responses, has emerged as a valuable tool in exploring the neural mechanisms of schizophrenia. It can capture the overactivity of the defaul

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Oedema Quantification: An Ex Vivo Porcine Skin Model.

Oedema is a common clinical finding in critically ill neonates and may reflect systemic illness such as congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, sepsis, and acute kidney injury. Oedema is characterised by tissue swelling due to water accumulation in the interstitial space. Currently, the gold standard in clinical practice is visual assessment, which is subjective and limited in accuracy. Alternative methods, such as ultrasound and bioimpedance, have been explored; however, they are unsuitable in neonates and do not provide direct water quantification. Near-infrared spec

Resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy in neurodegenerative diseases - A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and summarize alterations found in resting-state activity as measured via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in neurodegenerative diseases. BACKGROUND: fNIRS is a novel and emerging neuroimaging method suitable for a variety of study designs. Resting-state is the measure of brain activity in the absence of a task, which has been investigated for yielding information about neurodegenerative diseases, mainly using magnetic resonance imaging. We aimed to systematically review the usage of resting-state fNIRS (rsfNIRS) in neurodegenerative diseases.

Capturing postural blood pressure dynamics with near-infrared spectroscopy-measured cerebral oxygenation.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is highly prevalent in older adults and associated with dizziness, falls, lower physical and cognitive function, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. OH is currently diagnosed in a clinical setting with single-time point cuff measurements. Continuous blood pressure (BP) devices can measure OH dynamics but cannot be used for daily life monitoring. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has potential diagnostic value in measuring cerebral oxygenation continuously over a longer time period, but this needs further validation. This study aimed to compare NIRS-measured (cer

Dual-slope imaging of cerebral hemodynamics with frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy.

SIGNIFICANCE: This work targets the contamination of optical signals by superficial hemodynamics, which is one of the chief hurdles in non-invasive optical measurements of the human brain. AIM: To identify optimal source-detector distances for dual-slope (DS) measurements in frequency-domain (FD) near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and demonstrate preferential sensitivity of DS imaging to deeper tissue (brain) versus superficial tissue (scalp). APPROACH: Theoretical studies (in-silico) based on diffusion theory in two-layered and in homogeneous scattering media. In-vivo demonstrations of DS im

Cortical Hemodynamic Response Associated with Spatial Coding: A Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

Allocentric and egocentric are two types of spatial coding. Previous studies reported the dorsal attention network's involvement in both types. To eliminate possible paradigm-specific confounds in the results, this study employed fine-grained cue-to-target paradigm to dissociate allocentric (aSC) and egocentric (eSC) spatial coding. Twenty-two participants completed a custom visuospatial task, and changes in the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (O2-Hb) were recorded using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator-regularized princi

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) of Muscle HbO2 and MbO2 Desaturation During Exercise.

Continuous noninvasive monitoring of muscle oxygenation has important clinical applications for muscle disorders such as compartmentation syndrome, fibromyalgia, deep vein thrombosis, malignant hyperthermia, and the assessment of training in athletic performance. NIRS has precisely such potential and has been used to detect deep venous thrombosis, evaluate athletic performance, and assess limb reperfusion and revascularization. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between muscle hemoglobin oxygen (HbO2) and myoglobin (MbO2) desaturation using NIRS combined with venous blood sa

Validating a functional near-infrared spectroscopy diagnostic paradigm for Major Depressive Disorder.

Reduced haemodynamic response in the frontotemporal cortices of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) has been demonstrated using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Most notably, changes in cortical oxy-haemoglobin during a Japanese phonetic fluency task can differentiate psychiatric patients from healthy controls (HC). However, this paradigm has not been validated in the English language. Therefore, the present work aimed to distinguish patients with MDD from HCs, using haemodynamic response measured during an English letter fluency task. One hundred and five HCs and 105 p

Objective measurement of tinnitus using functional near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning.

Chronic tinnitus is a debilitating condition which affects 10-20% of adults and can severely impact their quality of life. Currently there is no objective measure of tinnitus that can be used clinically. Clinical assessment of the condition uses subjective feedback from individuals which is not always reliable. We investigated the sensitivity of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to differentiate individuals with and without tinnitus and to identify fNIRS features associated with subjective ratings of tinnitus severity. We recorded fNIRS signals in the resting state and in response

Near-infrared spectroscopy reveals neural perception of vocal emotions in human neonates.

Processing affective prosody, that is the emotional tone of a speaker, is fundamental to human communication and adaptive behaviors. Previous studies have mainly focused on adults and infants; thus the neural mechanisms underlying the processing of affective prosody in newborns remain unclear. Here, we used near-infrared spectroscopy to examine the ability of 0-to-4-day-old neonates to discriminate emotions conveyed by speech prosody in their maternal language and a foreign language. Happy, fearful, and angry prosodies enhanced neural activation in the right superior temporal gyrus relative to

Using Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to Study Dynamic Stereoscopic Depth Perception.

The parietal cortex has been widely implicated in the processing of depth perception by many neuroimaging studies, yet functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been an under-utilised tool to examine the relationship of oxy- ([HbO]) and de-oxyhaemoglobin ([HbR]) in perception. Here we examine the haemodynamic response (HDR) to the processing of induced depth stimulation using dynamic random-dot-stereograms (RDS). We used fNIRS to measure the HDR associated with depth perception in healthy young adults (n = 13, mean age 24). Using a blocked design, absolute values of [HbO] and [HbR] wer
