The effect of trauma on the severity of obsessive-compulsive spectrum symptoms: A meta-analysis.

It is important to consider trauma-related sequelae in the etiology and maintenance of psychopathology, namely understudied disorders such as those belonging to the Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum (OCS). This meta-analysis examined the association between past trauma exposure and current severity of OCS disorder symptoms. A systematic literature search was conducted with 24 (N=4557) articles meeting inclusion criteria. A significant overall effect size was obtained (r=0.20), indicating that exposure to past trauma is associated with a higher severity of OCS symptoms, with a stronger association

Spectrum of pediatric cancers in Mozambique: an analysis of hospital and population-based data.

The existing data provide little detail about the epidemiology of pediatric cancers in Mozambique. We aimed at characterizing the spectrum of pediatric cancers (0-14 years) diagnosed in Mozambique in two different calendar periods. Data were obtained from the Pathology Department of the Maputo Central Hospital (DP-HCM) (1999-2000 and 2009-2010), which receives virtually all samples for histopathological diagnosis in Maputo, with the exception of leukemia, and from the population-based Cancer Registry of Beira (2009-2010). In 1999-2000, the DP-HCM diagnosed 61 cancers. Burkitt lymphoma, maligna

Anxiety disorders in children and adolescents with autistic spectrum disorders: a meta-analysis.

There is considerable evidence that children and adolescents with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) are at increased risk of anxiety and anxiety disorders. However, it is less clear which of the specific DSM-IV anxiety disorders occur most in this population. The present study used meta-analytic techniques to help clarify this issue. A systematic review of the literature identified 31 studies involving 2,121 young people (aged <18 years) with ASD, and where the presence of anxiety disorder was assessed using standardized questionnaires or diagnostic interviews. Across studies, 39.6% of young p

A meta-analysis of sensory modulation symptoms in individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Sensory modulation symptoms are common in persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD); however have a heterogeneous presentation. Results from 14 studies indicated a significant high difference between ASD and typical groups in the presence/frequency of sensory symptoms, with the greatest difference in under-responsivity, followed by over-responsivity and sensation seeking. Three moderators that reduced the variability in findings among studies were: chronological age, severity of autism, and type of control group. Sensory differences were highest for studies of children ages 6-9 years, sampl

Factor analysis of the aberrant behavior checklist in individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Exploratory factor analysis (varimax and promax rotations) of the aberrant behavior checklist-community version (ABC) in 275 individuals with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) identified four- and five-factor solutions which accounted for >70% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis (Lisrel 8.7) revealed indices of moderate fit for the five-factor solution. Our results suggest that the factor structure of the ABC is robust within an ASD sample. Both solutions yielded a three items self-injury factor. Stratifying on this factor, we identified significant differences between the high- and low

The spectrum of giant cells in tumours of the salivary glands: an analysis of 11 cases.

In view of the different terminology for salivary gland tumours with giant cells, eleven cases were analysed by histopathology and immunocytochemistry. Four cases (three pleomorphic adenomas, one carcinosarcoma in a pleomorphic adenoma) were classified as having a foreign-body giant cell reaction, and five cases (two mucoepidermoid carcinomas, one acinic cell carcinoma, two carcinomas in pleomorphic adenomas) as having a sarcomatoid osteoclast-like giant cell reaction. In two further cases a giant cell tumour and a giant cell granuloma were associated with carcinomas in pleomorphic adenomas. A

The spectrum of olfactory neural tumors. A light-microscopic immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis.

Twenty-eight malignant olfactory neural tumors representative of the histologic spectrum commonly designated as olfactory neuroblastoma were subdivided into two groups: Group I closely resembling classical neuroblastoma (20 cases), and Group II exhibiting neuroendocrine features (eight cases). Immunohistochemically, the tumors were analyzed by using antibodies to keratin, neurofilament protein, S-100, and neuron specific enolase. Neuron specific enolase was the most consistently positive in both groups. Single S-100 positive cells, within or at the edges of tumor nests, often corresponded ultr

Pulsed Doppler imaging and spectrum analysis for detection of carotid artery disease.

One hundred carotid arteries in 53 patients suffering from transient cerebral ischaemia or amaurosis fugax have been studied prospectively. Internal carotid arteries were assessed by a six-channel pulsed Doppler imaging system combined with Doppler spectrum analysis and the findings compared with those obtained by X-ray contrast arteriography. Stenosis (greater than 25% diameter reduction) was correctly diagnosed by ultrasonography with a sensitivity of 93% and a specificity of 96%. Occlusion was correctly diagnosed with a sensitivity of 92% and a specificity of 97%. The ability to recognize a

Autistic traits distribution in different psychiatric conditions: A cluster analysis on the basis of the Adult Autism Subthreshold Spectrum (AdAS Spectrum) questionnaire.

Increasing interest is being paid on full-threshold and sub-threshold autism spectrum conditions among adults. Sub-threshold autistic traits (AT) seem to be distributed in a continuum from the clinical to the general population, being particularly higher among subjects with other psychiatric disorders. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the distribution of AT in a sample of subjects with different psychiatric conditions by means of a cluster analysis on the basis of the score reported to the AdAS Spectrum instrument. A total of 738 subjects recruited by seven Italian Universities wer

Spectrum-Effect Relationship-Based Analysis of Pneumonia Mixture Used for Pneumonia Treatment.

The pneumonia mixture has demonstrated significant therapeutic effects against pneumonia; however, its active compounds remain poorly understood. The spectrum-effect relationship is a method for studying correlations between chemical spectra and pharmacological effects. In the present study, a pneumonia rat model was established via intratracheal instillation of lipopolysaccharide. After molding, the pneumonia mixture was administered by gavage. The lungs, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and plasma samples were collected for determination of pharmacodynamic indices. UPLC-MS/MS detected eight com

Acute neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder patients' clinical analysis of disability-related biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) predominantly include optic neuritis and myelitis, among other symptoms. A greater level of disability during the acute phase typically suggests an unfavorable prognosis. Nevertheless, the clinical biomarkers that impact the severity of disability in NMOSD remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed 41 NMOSD patients and 41 normal controls to identify biomarkers associated with the disease. NMOSD patients were categorized into two groups based on their Expanded Disability Status Scale(EDSS) score: mild to moderate di

Placenta Accreta Spectrum Disorder Complicated with Endometriosis: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between placenta accreta spectrum disorder (PASD) and endometriosis. The relationships among pregnancy, assisted reproductive technology (ART), placenta previa, ART-conceived pregnancy and PASD were also determined. A systematic literature review was conducted using multiple computerized databases. Forty-eight studies (1990-2021) met the inclusion criteria. According to the adjusted pooled analysis (n = 3), endometriosis was associated with an increased prevalence of PASD (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 3.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.96-5.87). In the

Spectrum of Lysosomal Storage Disorders at Tertiary Centre: Retrospective Case-Record Analysis.

Pseudohypoaldosteronism is a rare disease characterized by resistance to aldosterone-targeted organs, hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, and severe salt loss in hyperaldosteronism. Homozygous mutations in SCNN1A , SCNN1B, and SCNN1G genes were found to be responsible for the etiology. About 80 cases with molecular basis have been reported to date. In this case, a newborn patient admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit due to feeding problems was examined. The parents of the patient had a consanguineous marriage, and they had lost their three sons due to hyperkalemia. Since sh

Review and gap analysis: molecular pathways leading to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Alcohol exposure during pregnancy affects the development of the fetus in various ways and may lead to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). FASD is one of the leading preventable forms of neurodevelopmental disorders. In the light of prevention and early intervention, knowledge on how ethanol exposure induces fetal damage is urgently needed. Besides direct ethanol and acetaldehyde toxicity, alcohol increases oxidative stress, and subsequent general effects (e.g., epigenetic imprinting, gene expression, and metabolite levels). The current review provides an overview of the existing knowledg

Speech perception in autism spectrum disorder: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often characterized by atypical language profiles and auditory and speech processing. These can contribute to aberrant language and social communication skills in ASD. The study of the neural basis of speech perception in ASD can serve as a potential neurobiological marker of ASD early on, but mixed results across studies renders it difficult to find a reliable neural characterization of speech processing in ASD. To this aim, the present study examined the functional neural basis of speech perception in ASD versus typical development (TD) using an activation l

Functional analysis helps to define KCNC3 mutational spectrum in Dutch ataxia cases.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 13 (SCA13) is an autosomal dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disorder of the cerebellum caused by mutations in the voltage gated potassium channel KCNC3. To identify novel pathogenic SCA13 mutations in KCNC3 and to gain insights into the disease prevalence in the Netherlands, we sequenced the entire coding region of KCNC3 in 848 Dutch cerebellar ataxia patients with familial or sporadic origin. We evaluated the pathogenicity of the identified variants by co-segregation analysis and in silico prediction followed by biochemical and electrophysiological studies. W
