Factors that influence the benefit from amplification in the elderly.

Many factors have been proposed as potential determinants of the benefit that an individual receives from wearing a hearing aid. In this study, to quantify their relative importance, 54 individuals with symmetrical sensorineural hearing impairment were presented with and without simulated hearing aid characteristics on two measures of disability that were based on identifying words in sentences. Benefit was defined as the difference between the percentage of correct scores with and without the aid characteristics switched into the audio circuit. The factors investigated were age, various perip

Auditory perception skills in children receiving simultaneous bilateral cochlear implants: early speech-discrimination results.

PURPOSE: The objective of the present study is to evaluate early speech-perception abilities using VRISD in toddlers who received simultaneous bilateral CIs between 12 and 36 months of age and to compare them with the findings in NH infants and to monitor the development of speech-perception skills within 6 months after cochlear implantation. METHODS: The VRISD test was performed using video visual reinforcement to assess speech-discrimination ability in the CI and NH groups. Four stimuli were used for testing in the present study: /a/, /i/, /ba/, and /da/. The two contrasts used for the rese

Investigating speech perception in children with dyslexia: is there evidence of a consistent deficit in individuals?

PURPOSE: The claim that speech perception abilities are impaired in dyslexia was investigated in a group of 62 children with dyslexia and 51 average readers matched in age. METHOD: To test whether there was robust evidence of speech perception deficits in children with dyslexia, speech perception in noise and quiet was measured using 8 different tasks involving the identification and discrimination of a complex and highly natural synthetic "bee"-"pea" contrast (copy synthesized from natural models) and the perception of naturally produced words. RESULTS: Children with dyslexia, on average, p

Auditory processing and cluttering in young children.

This study examined the differences among scores on four tests of auditory processing of 6 children who clutter and 6 control subjects matched for age, sex, and grade. Scores on a consonant-vowel dichotic listening task indicated that directing the attention of the attended ear improved the percentage of correct responses for both groups of children. Those who clutter, however, showed a greater percentage of change during the directed right and left ear conditions. Cluttering children performed poorer on right and left competing conditions of the Staggered Spondaic Word Test. No differences we

[Phoneme discrimination and dyslexia. Is the correlation gender-specific?].

Amongst pediatric phoniatry patients, the number of boys suspected of having dyslexia and/or an auditory processing disorder dominates over the number of girls. The aim of this study was to analyze whether there are different correlation patterns between phoneme discrimination and spelling ability in male and female children. Data from 253 children aged between 7 and 13 were analyzed retrospectively. Phoneme discrimination was assessed via the Heidelberg phoneme discrimination test and compared to the results of spelling and intelligence tests. We found a highly significant correlation between

Hearing in 70 and 75 year old people: results from a cross sectional and longitudinal population study.

Audiometric data are presented from a cross sectional and longitudinal population study of 70 and 75 year old people in Gothenburg, Sweden. The population studied included 1148 randomly selected 70 year old men and women. A subsample of 376 was tested with pure tone and speech audiometry. Five years later 261 of those were tested again with the same methods. The mean pure tone thresholds were only 8 to 10 dB. higher than data chosen as representative for presbycusis in selected populations. Between the ages of 70 and 75 there was no detectable change in the pure tone thresholds for men. The he

Auditory event-related potentials in the study of developmental language-related disorders.

This article reviews recent auditory event-related potential (ERP) studies of developmental language disorder (DLD) and dyslexia/reading disorder (RD). The possibility of using ERPs in searching for precursors of these disorders in the early development of infants at risk is also discussed. Differences in exogenous/sensory ERPs at the latency range of P1 and N1-P2 components have been reported between groups with DLD and RD and control groups. Latency differences between the groups may be related to a common timing deficit suggested by some researchers to be one of the possible underlying fact

Factors associated with individual differences in clinical measures of speech recognition among the elderly.

In the present study, the speech-recognition performance of 50 subjects aged 63 to 83 years was measured for a wide range of materials (nonsense syllables, monosyllabic words, sentences) and listening conditions (presentation levels of 70 and 90 dB SPL, both in quiet and in a noise background). In addition to complete audiologic evaluations, measures of auditory processing (the Test of Basic Auditory Capabilities [TBAC], Watson, 1987) and cognitive function (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised [WAIS-R], and the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised [WMS-R], Wechsler, 1981, 1987) were obtained fr

Hearing aid evaluation: predicting speech gain from insertion gain.

In this study, hearing aid gain for speech was defined as the difference in level between the aided and unaided performance-intensity functions measured at any specific value of percentage of items correct. The articulation index method was used to predict speech gain based on the subject's unaided sound field thresholds, ambient room noise, hearing aid internal noise, hearing aid insertion gain, and the subject's unaided performance-intensity function. Predicted speech gain agreed with measured speech gain with rms errors of only 3 dB for 11 subjects with mild or moderate hearing loss tested

Monaural versus binaural hearing: ease of listening, word recognition, and attentional effort.

Forty-eight normal-hearing subjects performed ease of listening, word recognition, and attentional effort tasks for speech in noise under binaural and two simulated unilateral conductive hearing loss (monaural) conditions. The two monaural conditions differed as a function of unoccluded ear orientation to the primary signal (monaural-near and monaural-far). Ease of listening ratings and word recognition scores were significantly poorer during monaural listening and significantly affected by ear orientation to the speech signal. Attentional effort was not significantly affected by changing from

Auditory capabilities of single-channel cochlear implant patients. Etiologic considerations.

The clinical audiometric test results from 53 postlingually deafened adults using the House single-channel cochlear implant were analyzed according to cause of deafness (otosclerosis, ototoxic drugs, meningitis, and trauma). With the exception of one measure, the routine clinical tests did not show a relationship between cause of deafness and performance with the cochlear implant. These findings suggest that, clinically, the single-channel cochlear implant is a viable prosthesis for patients with a wide variety of causes of deafness.

Hearing loss in diabetics.

The relationship between diabetes and sensorineural hearing loss has been disputed. This study compares 44 insulin-dependent diabetics with 38 age and sex matched controls. All had pure tone and speech audiometry performed, with any diabetic showing sensorineural deafness undergoing stapedial reflex decay tests. In 14 diabetics stapedial reflex tests showed no tone decay in any patient, but seven showed evidence of recruitment. Analysis of variance showed the diabetics to be significantly deafer than the control population. The hearing loss affected high frequencies in both sexes, but also low

[Characteristics of auditory brainstem response in presbyacusis--compared with the results of pure tone, speech or binaural audiometry].

The relationships between the auditory brainstem response (ABR) latencies and the results of three phychophysical measurements-pure tone audiometry, speech discrimination test and directional hearing test-were investigated in 58 subjects with presbyacusis. ABR latencies in presbyacusis patients were also compared with those in young adults with normal hearing or cochlear hearing loss. The results were as follows: There was a significant correlation between the average thresholds of pure tone audiometry and latencies of ABR waves I, III, V and/or interpeak latencies of waves I-III and I-V. Sensory deprivation due to otitis media episodes in early childhood and its effect at later age: A psychoacoustic and speech perception measure.

BACKGROUND: Past research has reported that children with repeated occurrences of otitis media at an early age have a negative impact on speech perception at a later age. The present study necessitates documenting the temporal and spectral processing on speech perception in noise from normal and atypical groups. OBJECTIVES: The present study evaluated the relation between speech perception in noise and temporal; and spectral processing abilities in children with normal and atypical groups. METHODS: The study included two experiments. In the first experiment, temporal resolution and frequency

Speech Impairment in Boys With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a highly prevalent spectrum of patterns of congenital defects resulting from prenatal exposure to alcohol. Approximately 90% of the cases involve speech impairment. Yet, to date, no detailed symptom profiles nor dedicated treatment plans are available for this population. PURPOSE: This study set out to chart the speech and speech motor characteristics in boys with FASD to profile the concomitant speech impairment and identify possible underlying mechanisms. METHOD: Ten boys with FASD (4.5-10.3 years old) and 26 typically developing chil
