Efficacy of the Adapted Cycles Intervention Program (PROCICLOS-A) and the influence of severity on the performance of children with Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: To verify the efficacy of PROCICLOS-A in children with SSD, according to the weekly frequency of sessions, and the severity's influence on the sessions' performance. METHODS: Eight children with SSD participated, both sexes, ages between 5:03 and 7:07 years, divided into two groups: C1, once a week; C2, twice a week. The efficacy of PROCICLOS-A was verified in C1 and C2 by analyzing variables from the phonology tests of the ABFW assessment across three evaluation moments. The performance in the sessions was obtained through scoring the activities. RESULTS: All measures significantly

Deep learning in ultrasound tongue imaging: a systematic review toward automated detection of speech sound disorders.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders (SSD) in children can significantly impact communication and development. Ultrasound tongue imaging (UTI) is a non-invasive method for visualising tongue motion during speech, offering a promising alternative for diagnosis and therapy. Deep learning (DL) techniques have shown great promise in automating the analysis of UTI data, although their clinical application for SSD remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to synthesise how DL has been utilised in UTI to support automated SSD detection, highlighting the advancement of techniques, key challeng

Executive functions in Persian-speaking preschool children with speech sound disorders and comparison with their typically developing peers.

This study aimed to compare working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility, the core components of executive functions, among two prevalent subtypes of preschool children with speech sound disorder, i.e., phonological delay (n = 16) and consistent phonological disorder (n = 15), and a group of typically developing children (n = 18). The correlation between executive function components and the accuracy of speech sound production were also investigated. Nonword repetition task and syllable repetition task were used to evaluate the phonological loop of working memory. Backward dig

Enabling New Articulatory Gestures in Children With Persistent Speech Sound Disorders Using Ultrasound Visual Biofeedback.

Purpose This study evaluated ultrasound visual biofeedback treatment for teaching new articulations to children with a wide variety of speech sound disorders. It was hypothesized that motor-based intervention incorporating ultrasound would lead to rapid acquisition of a range of target lingual gestures with generalization to untreated words. Method Twenty children aged 6-15 years with a range of mild to severe speech disorders affecting a variety of lingual targets enrolled in a case series with replication. Of these, 15 children completed the intervention. All of the children presented with a

Cross-linguistic generalization in the treatment of two sequential Spanish-English bilingual children with speech sound disorders.

PURPOSE: The effect of bilingual service delivery on treatment of speech sound disorders (SSDs) in bilingual children is largely unknown. Bilingual children with SSDs are typically provided intervention in only one language, although research suggests dual-language instruction for language disorders is best practice for bilinguals. This study examined cross-linguistic generalization of bilingual intervention in treatment of two 5-year-old sequential bilingual boys with SSDs (one with Childhood Apraxia of Speech), hypothesizing that selecting and treating targets in both languages would result

How should children with speech sound disorders be classified? A review and critical evaluation of current classification systems.

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) form a heterogeneous group who differ in terms of the severity of their condition, underlying cause, speech errors, involvement of other aspects of the linguistic system and treatment response. To date there is no universal and agreed-upon classification system. Instead, a number of theoretically differing classification systems have been proposed based on either an aetiological (medical) approach, a descriptive-linguistic approach or a processing approach. AIMS: To describe and review the supporting evidence, and to provide a critical ev

Volubility, Consonant Emergence, and Syllabic Structure in Infants and Toddlers Later Diagnosed With Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Speech Sound Disorder, and Typical Development: A Retrospective Video Analysis.

Purpose Studies of infants' early vocalizations have proven helpful in describing the developmental characteristics of various communication disorders. However, few studies have addressed the early vocalizations of infants and toddlers who were later diagnosed, as older children, with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). We refer to these infants and toddlers as LCAS. Extant studies also often lack a comparison group of infants and toddlers who were later diagnosed, as older children, with a speech sound disorder (SSD). We refer to these infants and toddlers as LSSD. We aimed to compare the volu

Applying evidence to practice by increasing intensity of intervention for children with severe speech sound disorder: a quality improvement project.

Speech sound disorder (SSD) affects up to 25% of UK children and may impact on: effective communication; the development of relationships; school progression and overall well-being. The evidence base shows that intervention for children with SSD is more effective and efficient when provided intensively in relation to the number of target sounds elicited in sessions (dose) and number of sessions per week (frequency). Southern Health and Social Care (HSC) Trust's baseline intensity of speech and language therapy (SLT) intervention was similar to that often found in current practice across the UK

A multigenerational family study of oral and hand motor sequencing ability provides evidence for a familial speech sound disorder subtype.

PURPOSE: To evaluate phenotypic expressions of speech sound disorder (SSD) in multigenerational families with evidence of familial forms of SSD. METHOD: Members of five multigenerational families (N = 36) produced rapid sequences of monosyllables and disyllables and tapped computer keys with repetitive and alternating movements. RESULTS: Measures of repetitive and alternating motor speed were correlated within and between the two motor systems. Repetitive and alternating motor speeds increased in children and decreased in adults as a function of age. In two families with children who had sever

Rethinking speech sound disorder (SSD) in non-syndromic cleft lip and palate: The importance of recognizing phonological and language difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Children born with cleft palate ± lip (CP ± L) are at risk of speech sound disorder (SSD). Up to 40% continue to have SSD at age 5-6 years. These difficulties are typically described as articulatory in nature and often include cleft speech characteristics (CSC) hypothesized to result from structural differences. In non-CP ± L SSD comorbidity with language difficulties is often reported. There is growing evidence of concomitant language difficulties in children with CP ± L and of a higher prevalence of developmental speech errors in children compared with non-CP ± L peers. The impac

Children's Communication Rights in the Holistic Assessment of Speech Sound Disorders: Do Speech-Language Pathologists Use the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Framework?

PURPOSE: During the assessment process, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have the opportunity to account for the involvement, thoughts, and views of children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). This is in alignment with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC; UNICEF, n.d.; United Nations, 1989) including CRC Article 12 (Respect for children's views), Article 13 (Sharing thoughts freely), and Article 23 (Children with disabilities), which affirms SLPs' role to facilitate participation and consider perspectives. Phonological processing and decoding abilities in early elementary school-aged children with speech sound disorders and developmental dyslexia.

Phonological processing and decoding are core foundations of literacy acquisition. Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) often show weaknesses in phonological awareness, memory, and retrieval, which can compromise their ability to decode print into sound. However, outcomes among SSD populations are heterogeneous, particularly when developmental dyslexia (DD) co-occurs. This study examined whether early elementary school-aged children with SSD only, SSD with DD (SSD+DD), and DD exhibit distinct profiles across phonological processing and decoding abilities. Forty-seven school-aged Korean c

How to cut the pie is no piece of cake: Toward a process-oriented approach to assessment and diagnosis of speech sound disorders.

BACKGROUND: 'Speech sound disorder' is an umbrella term that encompasses dysarthria, articulation disorders, childhood apraxia of speech and phonological disorders. However, differential diagnosis between these disorders is a persistent challenge in speech pathology, as many diagnostic procedures use symptom clusters instead of identifying an origin of breakdown in the speech and language system. AIMS: This article reviews typical and disordered speech through the lens of two well-developed models of production-one focused on phonological encoding and one focused on speech motor planning. We

Dynamic assessment, more than a diagnostic tool? Uses for goals, teaching moments, and procedural issues during intervention of speech sound disorder.

Dynamic assessment is typically used for diagnostic and baseline purposes; however, the current study explored expanding the use of dynamic assessment as a curriculum-based measure to additionally capture teaching moments and observe intervention elements during treatment of speech sound disorder (NCT06075303). Teaching moments occur when an SLT presents an antecedent, the child produces a behaviour, and the SLT responds with a consequence related to accuracy; yet, little is known about the characteristics of these elements that are the most essential for improving treatment outcomes.
