An eight-year-old, female spayed, domestic shorthair cat presented with a three-week history of progressive general proprioceptive ataxia and upper motor neuron paresis of the hindlimbs. Computed tomography revealed a mediastinal mass invading the vertebral canal with the T1 spinal nerve and roots, causing extramedullary compression of the cranial thoracic spinal cord. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies of the mass during postmortem examination disclosed a neoplasm, later determined to be a poorly differentiated histiocytic sarcoma. Feline histiocytic tumours are rare, with only

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is rare neoplasm, affecting both immunocompetent and immunodeficient patients. It is usually seen as intracranial tumor, but it can often involve cerebrospinal meninges, eyeballs and spinal cord. Although PCNSL is sensitive both to radiotheraphy and chemotheraphy, it's recurrences are very frequent. Mean survival time does not exceed several months. We described a case of 43 year old patient with diagnosed PCNSL and discussed clinical signs, diagnostics and treatment of the neoplasm. In our case report we emphasized transient remission after trea

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell neoplasmas are a heterogenous group of neoplastic tumor lesions occurring secondary to disordered proliferation of cells from a monocyte lineage. Plasmacytoma is a rare lesion that accounts for 5% of all plasma cell neoplasms. The current recommended treatment for solitary plasmacytoma is moderate dose radiation therapy. For patients who are suffering from axial back pain, spinal instability, radiculopathy, or bowel/bladder dysfunction secondary to spinal cord compression, surgical intervention with spinal decompression and stabilization can be used as an adjuvant to ra

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are mostly benign and slow-growing neoplasms of the central nervous system. Spinal meningiomas account for up to 45% of all intradural spinal tumors in adults and up to 25%-45% of all spinal tumors. Spinal extradural meningiomas are rare and may be easily confused with malignant neoplasms.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old woman was presented to our hospital with paraplegia and loss of sensation in the T7 dermatome and lower body. MRI findings showed T6-T7 right-sided intradural extramedullary and extradural lesion, measuring 1.4 cm × 1.5 cm × 3 cm, extending to the righ

BACKGROUND: Gout is a monosodium urate deposition disease which is prevalent worldwide. The usual manifestations are crystal arthropathy and tophi deposition in the soft tissues. Spinal tophi may also occur and are rarely reported, resulting in various clinical manifestations such as back pain, spinal cord compression, radiculopathy, and even mimicking epidural abscess and spondylodiscitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 42-year-old Chinese man with underlying gout who presented with back pain and radiculopathy. The diagnosis of spinal tophi was unsuspected and he was initially trea

Spinal hemangiomas are common, benign vascular lesions that involve the bony portion of vertebral bodies and are generally asymptomatic. Rarely, they can become aggressive and present with predominantly epidural extension, mimicking other neoplasms. We present the case of a fifty-one year old woman who presented with myelopathy and was discovered to have a large mass causing epidural spinal cord compression, thought to be due to a peripheral nerve sheath tumor. She underwent surgery for tumor debulking. Intraoperatively, the mass was found to be mostly epidural with minimal bone involvement. F

Localized lesions of the central nervous system do occur in cattle. Those affecting the cranial nerves and focal lesions of the spinal cord are most easily recognized by careful neurologic examination. Once the lesion has been anatomically localized, likely etiologic causes can be pursued. Probably the most common cause of cranial nerve deficits in cattle is listeriosis. Important differential diagnoses include brain and pituitary abscesses and extensions of ear infections. Other possible causes include PEM, TEME, hypovitaminosis A, and several rare, sporadic causes. In young cattle, spinal tr

Hemangioblastoma (HAB) is a benign, richly vascularized tumor that accounts for 2-6% of all spinal cord neoplasms and ranks third in the structure of intramedullary space-occupying lesions of the spinal cord. Hemangioblastoma may occur sporadically or, in approximately 30% of cases, as part of the clinical picture of a hereditary disease, von Hippel-Lindau disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of stereotactic irradiation of hemangioblastomas of the spinal localization in patients with sporadic and von Hippel-Lindau-associated hemangioblastomas The results of st

Hodgkin's lymphoma is a hematolymphoid neoplasm, primarily of B cell lineage, that has unique histologic, immunophenotypic, and clinical features. Neurologic complications of Hodgkin's Lymphoma can be separated into those that result directly from the disease, indirectly from the disease, or from its treatment. Direct neurologic dysfunction from Hodgkin's Lymphoma results from metastatic intracranial spinal disease, epidural metastases causing spinal cord/cauda equina compression, leptomeningeal metastases, or intradural intramedullary spinal cord metastases. Indirect neurologic dysfunction ma

We report the intramedullary growth of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST). A 50year-old man developed a severe tetraparesis over a 4-month period. Following irradiation of a chronic tonsillitis during his childhood, the patient had later experienced a number of post-radiation diseases, including a laryngeal cancer that required permanent tracheotomy. Before admission, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study had disclosed a C4-C5 intramedullary lesion. On admission to our Department, the patient had a nearly complete tetraparesis. At surgery, the lesion was exposed through a po

Women with neurologic conditions present a challenge during pregnancy and in the peripartum period. Given the low prevalence of these diseases during pregnancy, most management decisions are guided by retrospective reviews and case reports. This article reviews current literature for some of the more common or complex neurologic conditions affecting pregnancy with special consideration for anesthetic management. In particular, epilepsy; multiple sclerosis; primary intracranial hypertension; secondary intracranial hypertension-Arnold-Chiari malformations and intracranial neoplasms; spinal cord

The clinicalpathological findings in a 32-year old woman with ataxia-telangiectasia are presented. This is the oldest patient with this disease to be studied thoroughly clinically and at autopsy. Multiple small gliovascular malformations in the brain and spinal cord and telangiectasis of the liver were found. Other advanced lesions of ataxia-telangiectasia are illustrated. The vascular malformations of the central nervous system and liver are unique. The patient died of a malignant lymphoproliferative disorder and had five other malignant and benign neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: Isaacs' syndrome is a rare disease resulting from hyperexcitability of peripheral nerves causing continuous muscle fiber activity characterized by muscle twitching and stiffness at rest and delayed muscle relaxation after voluntary contraction. Our objective was to discuss the relationship of Isaacs' syndrome to paraneoplastic syndromes as reported in the available literature and in 3 patients evaluated at our academic medical center.
METHODS: We review the literature on Isaacs' syndrome and describe 3 patients in whom Isaacs' syndrome heralded underlying malignancy or benign neopl

BACKGROUND: Spinal tumors are neoplasms occurring in or around the spinal cord and can be classified based on tissue type and location within the spine. These lesions can lead to spinal cord compression and neurologic deficit. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) often face a significant burden of disease due to limited access to healthcare and advanced treatments. We investigate surgical and adjunctive therapies for spinal column tumors in LMICs.
METHODS: A systematic search was completed to identify articles related to spinal tumors in LMICs. Data were extracted for study parameters and

Spontaneous hematomyelia, or non-traumatic intramedullary spinal cord hemorrhage, is a rare and potentially devastating neurological condition. Unlike hematomyelia resulting from overt trauma, spontaneous cases occur in the absence of significant injury and present substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Etiologies are diverse and include spinal cord neoplasms, coagulopathies, anticoagulant use, spinal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), radiation-induced vasculopathy, minor mechanical insults, and systemic inflammatory conditions such as COVID-19. Given its rarity and the high risk

Myxopapillary ependymomas (MPEs) are rare spinal cord tumors with low rates of metastasis outside of the neuraxis. Gross total resection of MPEs can significantly improve progression-free survival; however, adjunctive treatment remains unstandardized. A 29-year-old female with a history of spina bifida occulta surgical correction and lower back pain presented with dyspnea and tachycardia. A large pulmonary artery mass was discovered consistent with pulmonary thromboembolism. It was subsequently determined to be an intravascular metastasis secondary to sacral MPE. Standardization of MPE treatme

Medical records of patients suffering from spinal cord or cauda equina compression secondary to metastatic tumour of the spinal canal were reviewed. Out of 55 patients treated in the Department of Neurosurgery in Lublin throughout 1976-1996 for metastatic disease of the spinal canal, forty were operated on. Clinical symptoms, methods of treatment and course of disease in this last group of patients were analysed. It showed that the great majority of patients are admitted to the neurosurgical department with severe neurological deficits. Eighty percent of patients (n = 40) presented with deteri

BACKGROUND: Malignant soft tissue spinal canal tumors compromise 20% of all spinal neoplasms. They may be primary or metastatic lesions, originating from a diverse range of tissues within and surrounding the spinal canal. These masses can present as diverse emergencies such as secondary cauda equina syndrome, vascular compromise, or syringomyelia. Interpretation of malignant soft tissue spinal canal tumors imaging is an essential for non-radiologists in the setting of emergencies. This task is intricate due to a great radiologic pattern overlap among entities.

Five patients developed mycotic spinal arachnoiditis-meningitis causing signs and symptoms of spinal cord neoplasm. Four had cryptococcal infection, the fifth had aspergillosis. In three patients, diagnosis was made at surgery; all three developed acute fungal meningitis postoperatively and two died. The diagnosis was made nonsurgically in two patients and was followed by medical cure. These five and twelve other reported patients with mycotic spinal arachnoiditis shared features that suggested the diagnosis. In contrast to most patients with spinal tumors, those reported here tended to be you

The authors report three cases of complications of renal artery embolization in patients with renal carcinoma. In two cases renal artery embolization was followed by paraparesis with loss of sphincter control. In these cases nephrectomy was performed on the side of the neoplasm and neurological disturbances disappeared after pharmacological treatment and rehabilitation. The third patient was not treated surgically. Embolization was followed by development of spinal cord damage at the level Th12. The patient died of neoplastic cachexia and cardiorespiratory failure.
