Spinal Cord Stimulation Enhances Microglial Activation in the Spinal Cord of Nerve-Injured Rats.

Microglia can modulate spinal nociceptive transmission. Yet, their role in spinal cord stimulation (SCS)-induced pain inhibition is unclear. Here, we examined how SCS affects microglial activation in the lumbar cord of rats with chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve. Male rats received conventional SCS (50 Hz, 80% motor threshold, 180 min, 2 sessions/day) or sham stimulation on days 18-20 post-CCI. SCS transiently attenuated the mechanical hypersensitivity in the ipsilateral hind paw and increased OX-42 immunoreactivity in the bilateral dorsal horns. SCS also upregulated the m

The distribution of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) in the medulla oblongata, spinal cord, cranial and spinal nerves of frog, Microhyla ornata.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) enzymatic activity has been reported in few amphibian species. In this study, we report its unusual localization in the medulla oblongata, spinal cord, cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and ganglions of the frog, Microhyla ornata. In the rhombencephalon, at the level of facial and vagus nerves, the NADPH-d labeling was noted in the nucleus of the abducent and facial nerves, dorsal nucleus of the vestibulocochlear nerve, the nucleus of hypoglossus nerve, dorsal and lateral column nucleus, the nucleus of the solitary tract, the dorsal

Acute and chronic sectioning of fifth lumbar spinal nerve has equivalent effects on the primary afferents of sciatic nerve in rat spinal cord.

The mechanism of neuropathic pain may be associated with sprouting of uninjured primary afferents of peripheral nerves into regions of the spinal cord denervated through peripheral injury. However, this remains controversial. Therefore, the purpose of the present investigation was, first, to determine in detail the central distributions of the unmyelinated primary afferents of each of the L4, L5, and L6 components of sciatic nerve, then to assess the distribution of afferent sciatic terminals following acute and chronic injury to (L5) nerve. First, we injected isolectin B4 (IB4), into the scia

Functional and morphological evaluation of the trapezius muscle after spinal accessory nerve transfer to brachial plexus nerves.

INTRODUCTION: The main innervation of the trapezius muscle is provided by the spinal accessory nerve. Several studies describe the contributions of cervical plexus roots to the trapezius muscle innervation, either directly or through connections with the spinal accessory nerve. There is no adequate understanding of how the trapezius muscle is affected after using the spinal accessory nerve in nerve transfer procedures with the usual technique, preserving at least 1 branch for the upper trapezius. METHODS: We evaluated 20 patients with sequelae of traumatic brachial plexus injury who underwent

Ultrasonographic evaluation reveals thinning of cervical nerve roots and peripheral nerves in spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography (US) is a noninvasive and patient-friendly tool for the evaluation of peripheral nerves. In motor neuron diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been reported to show the atrophy of peripheral nerves on US. However, the US findings are still unclear in spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), an adult-onset lower motor neuron disease caused by an abnormal CAG repeat expansion in the androgen receptor gene. METHODS: We prospectively recruited and evaluated 11 patients with genetically confirmed SBMA and 9 patients with ALS diagnosed according to the revi

Adrenergic innervation of the vasa nervorum in the cranial nerves and spinal roots in the subarachnoid space.

Fluorescence microscopy revealed that the innervation of the vasa nervorum of both cranial and spinal nerve roots in the subarachnoid space in the monkey is adrenergic in nature. The endoneurium of the cranial nerve roots contained free adrenergic nerve fibers which were not related to the vessel wall.

Distribution of accessory and hypoglossal nerves in the hindbrain and spinal cord of lungless salamanders, family Plethodontidae.

Study of the innervation of the musculature related to feeding behavior in plethodontid salamanders by means of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique has demonstrated the existence of a true spinal accessory nerve which innervates neck musculature, enters the brain via the ganglion of IX/X cranial nerves and has its motor neurons within the nucleus of the second spinal nerve. Further, it has been shown that the first spinal nerve, being strictly motor, alone constitutes the ramus hypoglossus and is, therefore, homologous to the hypoglossus of amniotes.

Experimental study on donor nerves for brachial plexus injury: comparison between the spinal accessory nerve and the intercostal nerve.

The spinal accessory nerve and intercostal nerves are widely used as donor nerves for neurotization in patients with brachial plexus injuries. However, the characteristic differences in reinnervation by the spinal accessory and intercostal nerves have not been investigated. The purpose of this study is to compare the resulting contractile properties of the biceps muscles following nerve-crossing procedures of spinal accessory nerve and intercostal nerves to the musculocutaneous nerves. In 10 beagle dogs, the spinal accessory nerve was used to reinnervate the left biceps muscle, and the second

Comparison of neuropathic pain and neuronal apoptosis following nerve root or spinal nerve compression.

Altered dorsal root ganglion (DRG) function is associated with neuropathic pain following spinal nerve injury. However, compression of the cauda equina and dorsal rhizotomy proximal to the DRG do not induce significant pain, whereas in the spinal nerve and peripheral nerve, injury distal to the DRG does induce neuropathic pain. Caspase signaling induces apoptosis, and caspase inhibitors prevent pain-related behavior. The degree of DRG neuronal apoptosis is thought to play a role in pain behavior. We suggest that differences in pain behavior according to the injury sites within the DRG may be r

Analysis of critical 3D imaging data of surrounding cervical nerves and bone markers in spinal endoscopic surgery.

Determining the relationships among the epiphyseal ring, cervical nerve and vertebral pedicle isthmus via three-dimensional reconstruction can facilitate the precise removal of part of the uncinate process via spinal endoscopy, allowing safe cervical nerve decompression. C3/4-C7/T1-related indices were measured in 26 patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. The lowest point of epiphyseal ring posterior margin (LPER) was used as the key point for measuring indices, and the following distances were measured around the LPER: the anteroposterior distance from the LPER to the anterior marg

Calretinin-immunoreactive nerves in the uterus, pelvic autonomic ganglia, lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia and lumbosacral spinal cord.

Nerves containing the calcium-binding protein calretinin have been reported in several organs but not in female reproductive organs and associated ganglia. This study was undertaken to determine if nerves associated with the uterus contain calretinin and the source(s) of calretinin-synthesizing nerves in the rat (are they sensory, efferent, or both?). Calretinin-immunoreactive nerves were present in the uterine horns and cervix where they were associated with arteries, uterine smooth muscle, glands, and the epithelium. Calretinin-immunoreactive terminals were apposed to neurons in the paracerv

Development of the spinal nerves in the mouse with special reference to innervation of the axial musculature.

Development of the mouse spinal nerves was studied. On E11 (11th day of gestation), the primitive spinal nerve fascicle extended ventrally in the anterior half of the sclerotome. Spinal nerves in the forelimb region united with each other to form the primitive brachial plexus. Their terminal segment was covered by a peculiar cell mass. On E12, five primary branches developed along the primitive spinal nerve trunk. The ramus dorsalis was originally a cutaneous nerve, supplying two series of branches to the skin of the back. The medial series was derived from the dorsal ramus of C2-C8, and the l

Prolonged inhibition of a spinal reflex after intense stimulation of distant peripheral nerves in the decerebrated rabbit.

1. In decerebrated rabbits, repetitive stimulation of the high-threshold afferents of the left common peroneal (CP) nerve evokes prolonged depression of the sural-gastrocnemius medialis (GM) reflex recorded in the same limb. This inhibition is antagonized by co-administration of the opioid antagonist naloxone with the alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist idazoxan. The present study was designed to investigate whether such inhibition could be elicited from the contralateral hindlimb or the forelimbs. 2. The sural-GM reflex of decerebrated rabbits was depressed for more than 15 min after stimulation

The Outcome of Spinal Accessory Nerve Transfer to the Musculocutaneous Nerve in Birth Brachial Plexus Palsy.

PURPOSE: Patients with brachial plexus birth injury with limited intraplexal donors require the use of extraplexal donors. Concern regarding the potential for respiratory problems resulting from the harvest of intercostal nerves or the phrenic nerve suggests the need for other options. Transfer of the spinal accessory nerve (SAN) is one option for restoring elbow flexion in adult patients; however, there are few reports of the results of this transfer in brachial plexus birth injury. This study aimed to report the result of SAN transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) in brachial plexus bi

The X-pointer: A forgotten anatomical relationship of spinal accessory nerve and great auricular nerve.

INTRODUCTION: The preservation of the spinal accessory nerve cannot be overlooked in neck dissection. Injury to the nerve results in shoulder dysfunction and other related morbidities. In this article, we describe a unique constant relationship between spinal accessory nerve and great auricular nerve, at the junction of the anterior and posterior triangles of the neck, eponymously labelled the X- pointer. METHODOLOGY: This was an observational study conducted at a tertiary care cancer centre that runs a comprehensive surgical training program. A 100 cases of modified radical neck dissection p

The use of thoracodorsal nerve transfer in restoration of irreparable C5 and C6 spinal nerve lesions.

There are only a few reports on the use of thoracodorsal nerve (TDN) transfer to the musculocutaneous or axillary nerves in cases of directly irreparable brachial plexus injuries. In this study, we analysed outcome and time-course of recovery in correlation with recipient nerves and type of nerve transfer (isolated or in combination with other collateral branches) for 27 patients with transfer to the musculocutaneous or axillary nerves. Using this nerve as donor, we obtained useful functional recovery in all 12 cases for the musculocutaneous nerve, and in 14 (93.3%) of 15 nerve transfers for t
