Advanced third-stage larvae of G. spinigerum were obtained from two separate sources, namely from cysts in the livers of naturally infected eels (L3E) and from experimentally infected mice (L3M). Morphology of the L3E was studied microscopically. The larvae were homogenized in distilled water, 1% Triton X-100 or 1% sodium deoxycholate containing protease inhibitors. Protein compositions of the three crude extracts were compared, on the same weight basis, by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Coomassie brilliant blue staining while their antigenicities wer

Skin nodules of Onchocerca fasciata Railliet and Henry, 1910 (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) are a common finding in dromedary camels, though with a minimal clinical impact. There is little information about the morphology, molecular make-up and pathological impact of this parasite. Onchocerca fasciata nodules (1.3-2.1 cm in diameter and 509-841 mg in weight) were detected on the neck region in 31.5% of dromedary camels examined in Kerman province, southeastern Iran. Of 38 isolated nodules, only 23 (60.5%) contained viable worms. Measurement and morphological analyses were performed on isolated fem

BACKGROUND: Wolbachia endosymbionts are a proven target for control of human disease caused by filarial nematodes. However, little is known about the occurrence of Wolbachia in taxa closely related to the superfamily Filarioidea. Our study addressed the status of Wolbachia presence in members of the superfamily Dracunculoidea by screening the human parasite Dracunculus medinensis and related species from wildlife for Wolbachia.
FINDINGS: D. medinensis, D. lutrae and D. insignis specimens were all negative for Wolbachia colonization by PCR screening for the Wolbachia ftsZ, 16S rRNA and Wolbach

The oriental eyeworm, Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae), infects a range of definitive hosts, such as dogs, cats, foxes, rabbits, and humans. This parasite usually lives under the nictitating membrane of the eye, where the adult females release first-stage larvae into the lachrymal secretions; these larvae are subsequently ingested by the intermediate arthropod host within which they develop to the infective, third-stage larvae. The latter larvae are then deposited into the eyes of the definitive host. Recently, T. callipaeda has been reported to infect dogs, foxes, and/or cats in E

BACKGROUND: Cercopithifilaria bainae is a filarioid parasite that infects dogs, being transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus group ticks in many countries of the Mediterranean basin. This study assessed the incidence density rate (IDR) of infection by C. bainae in dogs and the probability of co-infection with other tick-borne pathogens (i.e., Anaplasma platys, Babesia vogeli and Hepatozoon canis), in an area of high endemicity in southern Italy.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: From March 2011 to October 2012, a field study involving 58 young dogs naturally exposed to tick infestation was con

BACKGROUND: Phortica okadai and Phortica variegata are the primary vectors of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda, which infects humans and various mammals. Climate change and intensified human activities have altered the potential suitable habitats of these vectors, posing a risk of expanded T. callipaeda transmission. This study aims to predict the current potential suitable habitats and future distribution patterns of the two species, providing a scientific basis for vector-borne disease prevention and control.
METHODS: Species occurrence records were compiled from the Global Biodiver

This study reports a 50-year-old male case of Thelazia callipaeda infection without a history of pet contact. The patient exhibited chronic ocular surface inflammation after exposure to wild insects and was misdiagnosed multiple times with bacterial conjunctivitis before definitive diagnosis by an ophthalmic specialist. This report emphasizes the core steps of the T. callipaeda extraction procedure. These steps include preoperative preparation, topical ocular anesthesia using 0.4% oxybuprocaine hydrochloride eye drops, sufficient exposure of the surgical field with an eyelid speculum, precise

The ornamental fish trade has facilitated the global dissemination of parasites, posing significant biosecurity risks. This study documents the first detection of the nematode Philometroides sanguineus in farmed goldfish (Carassius auratus) in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Specimens of gravid females, found in the caudal fins, and males, collected from the swim bladder, were identified through morphological, molecular and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. This report underscores the risk of nonnative pathogen introduction via ornamental fish translocation, and the possibility of their spre

The nematode Spinitectus notopteri Karve et Naik, 1951 was collected from two species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Notopteridae, namely Chitala ornata (Gray) and Notopterus notopterus (Pallas), at Khun Thale Swamp in Surat Thani province of southern Thailand. The overall prevalence of the parasite was found to be 88% (94 fish infected/106 fish examined). A higher prevalence was found in C. ornata (96%), while a higher intensity was noted for N. notopterus (117 parasites/fish). The most important morphological characters were the presence of cephalic and cuticular structures, prec

OBJECTIVE: To describe acute mesenteric infarction due to suspected Spirocerca lupi aberrant migration in 5 dogs.
CASE SERIES SUMMARY: All dogs were large breed, none of which exhibited typical clinical signs associated with spirocercosis. All dogs were eventually diagnosed with septic peritonitis. On exploratory laparotomy, thickening of the jejunal arteries, surrounding mesojejunum, and segmental necrosis were identified. Similar thickening and hematoma formation were found in other regions of the mesentery. In 4 of the cases, the necrotic segment was located in the distal jejunum. Histolog

Human thelaziasis is a zoonotic eye disease caused by a nematode parasite called Thelazia. In India, seven human cases of Thelazia have been reported earlier. This is the first case report of an infant infected with Thelazia. During the month of July, 2012, the infant was presented with an eye problem to the eye clinic from a village of Dibrugarh. Five worms (three female and two male) were recovered from the left eye of the infant. Thelazia infection is rare in infant, and report of this case is suggestive of prevalence of infection in the area and warrants further investigation.

Gnathostomiasis is rarely reported in travelers, although the disease remains a major public health problem in Southeast Asia. A creeping eruption and Quincke's edema (slowly migrating erythema with pruritus) appeared in two Japanese men who had eaten raw freshwater shrimp in Myanmar. A Gnathostoma larva was found in subcutaneous tissue from one of the men. Four species causing human gnathostomiasis, G. hispidum, G. doloresi, G. nipponicum and G. spinigerum, can be distinguished based on the number of nuclei in intestinal epithelial cells of infected larvae, in cross-section. In G. hispidum, o

Spirocerca lupi is a parasitic nematode responsible for spirocercosis, a potentially severe disease in domestic dogs. Clinical manifestations are variable and nonspecific, often leading to confusion with other gastrointestinal, respiratory, or neoplastic disorders and making diagnosis challenging. Although canine spirocercosis has previously been reported on Reunion Island, the molecular epidemiology and data on its occurrence remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the circulation of S. lupi on Reunion Island, using endoscopy, coproscopy, and molecular assays. Over a 75-day period, 88

Thelaziasis, also known as thelaziosis, is a neglected vector-borne disease caused by parasitic nematodes from the genus Thelazia, belonging to the family Thelaziidae. The disease is transmitted biologically by various fly species, including the genus Musca (family Muscidae), Phortica (family Drosophilidae), and Fannia (family Fanniidae). These flies act as intermediate hosts (IHs) by depositing infective third-stage larvae (L3) during their tear feeding. Thelazia spp., such as T. gulosa, T. skrjabini, and T. rhodesi, inhabit the ocular regions of various animals, including humans and birds. A
