In this review, we will try to convince the readers that the immune system is controlled by an endogenous neural reflex, termed inflammatory reflex, that inhibits the acute immune response during the course of a systemic immune challenge. We will analyse here the contribution of different sympathetic nerves as possible efferent arms of the inflammatory reflex. We will discuss the evidence that demonstrates that neither the splenic sympathetic nerves nor the hepatic sympathetic nerves are necessary for the endogenous neural reflex inhibition of inflammation. We will discuss the contribution of

For a fuller understanding of the nerve supply to the muscles of the pelvic outlet in man, 4 pelvic-halves of crab-eating monkeys and 6 pelvic-halves of Japanese monkeys were minutely dissected. 1) The composition of the pudendal plexus tends to be limited to 2 segments, S1 and S2. 2) If we consider the origin of the nerves, the pudendal plexus is divided into 2, the first or medial and the second or lateral parts. From the first part arise the pelvic splanchnic nerves, the nerve to the iliopubocaudalis and the nerve to the ischiocaudalis. From the second part the dorsal nerve of the penis or

Autonomic nerves regulate the innervation and function of the bladder, uterus, and rectum via their terminal branches. This section emphasizes the superior hypogastric plexus, hypogastric nerve, pelvic splanchnic nerves, inferior hypogastric plexus, and its terminal branches, namely the vesical, rectal, and uterine nerves. Somatic nerves traverse the pelvis, providing motor and/or sensory innervation to the pelvic floor and lower limbs. It is important to recognize the obturator nerve, genitofemoral nerve, lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, lumbosacral trunk, and femoral nerve.

1. The effect of GABA and GABA receptor-modulating drugs on release of [3H]acetylcholine was studied in the guinea-pig inferior mesenteric ganglion. 2. GABA caused a dose-dependent increase in [3H]acetylcholine release during stimulation of the lumbar colonic nerves. Muscimol (10 microM) and diazepam (5 microM) also increased [3H]acetylcholine release during stimulation of the lumbar colonic nerves whereas baclofen (10 microM) had no effect. 3. Bicuculline (20-100 microM) and picrotoxin (50 microM) alone reduced [3H]acetylcholine release during electrical stimulation of the lumbar colonic nerv

What is the topic of this review? We review the current literature on the neural reflex termed the 'inflammatory reflex' that inhibits an excessive release of inflammatory mediators in response to an immune challenge. What advances does it highlight? The original model proposed that the inflammatory reflex is a vago-vagal reflex that controls immune function. We posit that, in the endotoxaemic animal model, the vagus nerves do not appear to play a role. The evidence suggests that the efferent motor pathway, termed here the 'splanchnic anti-inflammatory pathway', is purely sympathetic, travelli

The autonomic nerves of the lesser pelvis are particularly prone to iatrogenic lesions due to their exposed position during manifold surgical interventions. Nevertheless, the cause of rectal and urinary incontinence or sexual dysfunctions, for example after rectal cancer resection or hysterectomy, remains largely understudied, particularly with regard to the female pelvic autonomic plexuses. This study focused on the macroscopic description of the superior hypogastric plexus, hypogastric nerves, inferior hypogastric plexus, the parasympathetic pelvic splanchnic nerves and the sympathetic fibre

Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve (VNS) is a novel strategy used to treat inflammatory conditions. Therapeutic VNS activates both efferent and afferent fibers; however, the effects attributable to vagal afferent stimulation are unclear. Here, we tested if selective activation of afferent fibers in the abdominal vagus suppresses systemic inflammation. In urethane-anesthetized rats challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 60 µg/kg, i.v.), abdominal afferent VNS (2 Hz for 20 min) reduced plasma tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF) levels 90 min later by 88% compared with unmanipulated animal

Frequency-domain analyses were used to determine the effect of cold stress on the relationships between the discharge bursts of sympathetic nerve pairs, sympathetic and aortic depressor nerve pairs, and sympathetic and phrenic nerve pairs in chloralose-anesthetized, baroreceptor-innervated rats. Sympathetic nerve discharge (SND) was recorded from the renal, lumbar, splanchnic, and adrenal nerves during decreases in core body temperature from 38 to 30 degrees C. The following observations were made. 1) Hypothermia produced nonuniform changes in the level of activity in regionally selective symp

The centrally induced effects of angiotensin II and substance P on the cardiovascular system and on neuronal efferent activity of the splanchnic, renal, and adrenal nerves were investigated in chronically instrumented conscious rats. The pressor responses to substance P injected into the lateral brain ventricle were accompanied by marked and short latency increases in heart rate, cardiac output, splanchnic, renal, and adrenal nerve activity, and a rise in plasma noradrenaline and adrenaline. Behaviorally, an arousal-type reaction was observed. In contrast, the pressor responses to intracerebro

It is the objective of this study to etablish the technique of laparoscopic exposure of all pelvic somatic and autonomous nerves. In all our patients who underwent a laparoscopic surgical approach of the retroperitoneum, exposure and assessment of the exposed nerves using laparoscopic neuro-navigation were performed. Laparoscopic surgery allows the surgical approach to all pelvic nerves, particularly to the sciatic nerve, the pudendal nerve and the splanchnic pelvic nerves. We describe a cartography of the functional anatomy of the pelvic plexus and elaborate on the concept of "laparoscopic pe

Urinary and sexual dysfunction are common problems after rectal cancer surgery, and the likely cause is damage to the pelvic autonomic nerves during surgery. In recent years, attention has been focused on preserving the autonomic nerves through a technique which is usually combined with total mesorectal excision or radical pelvic lymphadenectomy. The autonomic nerves consist of the paired sympathetic hypogastric nerve, sacral splanchnic nerves, and the pelvic autonomic nerve plexus. We will demonstrate the anatomy of the pelvic autonomic nerves and the relation of these nerves to the mesorecta

In acute experiments on cats using resistography and extracorporeal venous reservoir, responses of the small intestine's arterial and venous vessels were studied by means of successive pressor reflexes, electrical stimulation of the splanchnic nerve (1-80/sec) and i.a. administration of different doses of adrenaline (A) and noradrenaline (NA). The maximal constrictor responses of the vessels occurred mainly on the 10/sec stimulation; A induced mainly an increase in the perfusion pressure and venous outflow whereas NA induced chiefly an increase in the perfusion pressure and diminishing of the

PURPOSE: Some recent neurophysiological studies have suggested cross-innervation of pelvic genitourinary organs by extrinsic left-right communicating nerves. However, no definite course for these nerves has been clearly determined macroanatomically in humans. In the present study we extensively investigated the adult human pelvis to elucidate their courses by the whole-mount staining method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 6 male human specimens that had been subjected to pathological dissection were examined by means of an acetylcholinesterase whole-mount staining method. A map of nerve pa

OBJECTIVES: Deep pelvic endometriosis surgery may need substantial excisions, which in turn expose to risks of injury to the pelvic nerves. To limit functional complications, nerve-sparing surgical techniques have been developed but should be adapted to the specific multifocal character of endometriotic lesions. The objective was to identify the anatomical areas where the pelvic nerves are most at risk of injury during endometriotic excisions.
METHODS: The Medline and Embase databases have been searched for available literature using the keywords "hypogastric nerve or hypogastric plexus [Mesh

Emerging preclinical data suggest that splanchnic sympathetic nerve activation may play an important role in the pathophysiology of hypertension. We sought to determine the potential therapeutic application of catheter-based splanchnic denervation in a clinically relevant large animal model of hypertensive cardiomyopathy (hCMP). Sustained elevated blood pressure was induced in adult pigs using a combination of intravenous infusion of Ang II (angiotensin II) and subcutaneous implantation of deoxycorticosterone acetate pellets to establish a large animal model of hCMP. Serial changes in cardiac

In cats afferent impulses from splanchnic and vagus nerve preparations were studied. In each splanchnic nerve serving the stomach or the adjacent part of the duodenum, cold-sensitive afferents could be recorded. There were also numerous mechanosensitive fibers originating from stomach, intestine, mesentery and the region of blood vessels. No thermal afferents were found in the vagus nerve. The cardiovascular and respiratory myelinated afferents were insensitive to thermal stimuli.

The abdominal sympathetic nervous system provides sympathetic innervation to the abdominal organs and gonads. This system is part of an extensive neural network that extends from the base of the skull to the pelvis. The preaortic (or prevertebral) plexus is a key component of the abdominal sympathetic system and is represented by a variable nervous network located anterior to the abdominal aorta. The aim of our study was to identify all these sympathetic structures and describe the formation and relationships of the preaortic plexus. We examined five cadavers (aged 66-71) with no medical or su

We studied the effects of the endogenous cannabinoid ligand anandamide on blood pressure, single unit activity of barosensitive neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla, and postganglionic splanchnic sympathetic nerve discharge in urethane-anesthetized rats. In rats with an intact baroreflex, an intravenous bolus of 4 mg/kg anandamide caused a triphasic blood pressure response: transient hypotension, followed by a brief pressor and more prolonged depressor phase. Anandamide evoked a "primary" increase in neuronal firing coincident with its pressor effect and a "secondary," baroreflex-media

A middle rectal artery arising from the lateral sacral artery (MRAls) in the right pelvis of a 99-year-old male was observed. Although variations of the origin of the middle rectal artery have been reported on many occasions, there are few descriptions of the trajectory in the literature. In our case, the MRAls branched from the lateral sacral artery on the sacral surface close to the third sacral sympathetic ganglion and immediately penetrated the third sacral splanchnic nerve and the parasympathetic pelvic splanchnic nerve from the ventral ramus of the forth sacral nerve. The MRAls entered i

The effect of atropine (0.2 mg/kg) on the release of insulin from the pancreas, in response to both exogenous and endogenous hyperglycaemia, has been investigated in conscious 2- to 5-week-old calves. 2 The rise in mean plasma insulin concentration in response to infusions of glucose, which raised the concentration of glucose in the plasma by about 4.0 mmol/l, was significantly depressed in calves with cut splanchnic nerves by prior administration of atropine. 3. The rise in plasma insulin concentration, which normally follows stimulation of the splanchnic nerves in the conscious calf (Bloo
