Using Standardized Case Vignettes to Evaluate Nursing Home Staff Recognition of Delirium and Delirium Superimposed on Dementia.

The purpose of this study is to describe nursing home staff knowledge regarding delirium detection and the most common causes of delirium. Specific aims that guided this study include identifying the rate of nurse recognition of delirium and delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD), including different motoric subtypes of delirium, using standardized case vignettes, and exploring what nursing home staff describe as the potential causes of delirium. The study showed overall poor recognition of delirium and DSD, which did not improve over time. Interventions have the potential to increase the ear

Collaborative approaches to masking: statewide threshold development and performance across three respiratory seasons.

OBJECTIVE: Transmission of respiratory illnesses in health care settings poses significant risks to patients and staff. Without clear, standardized masking thresholds, policies may vary, resulting in confusion. We developed statewide consensus thresholds to guide masking in Minnesota health care systems over three respiratory seasons. METHODS: A multidisciplinary workgroup consisting of infection preventionists, infectious disease providers, occupational health specialists, and representatives from the state health department reviewed available data, including hospitalization rates, influenza

Physical aggressive resident behavior during hygienic care.

Management of aggressive behavior has been identified as a concern for nursing staff who provide institutional care for cognitively impaired elderly. The Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA '87) mandates a trial reduction in the use of chemical and physical restraints, and the development of nursing interventions for the management of behavioral disorders of institutionalized cognitively impaired elderly. Most skilled nursing facilities, however, are limited in their ability to provide environmental and behavioral programs to manage aggressive patient behavior. For the purposes of this study, phy

The Personal and Professional Development Experiences of Paediatric Nurses: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

AIM: To explore paediatric nurses' experiences and perceptions of personal and professional development (PPD). BACKGROUND: PPD is a crucial factor in enhancing nurses' job satisfaction and retention. Whilst this topic has been widely explored in general nursing, limited research exists on how paediatric nurses perceive and experience PPD. Registered nurses at the standard clinical grade (Band 5) comprise the majority of the children's nursing workforce, but are rarely the focus of PPD. DESIGN: This UK-based qualitative study used interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) following COREQ

Ongoing consultation as a method of improving performance of staff members in a group home.

A model of ongoing consultation was implemented in a community group home for 8 adults with severe and profound mental retardation. Two consultants, highly experienced in working with people with mental retardation and in the procedures used in group homes, taught staff members to use a token reinforcement system, to engage the adults in a variety of activities, and to improve the content and style of the staff members' interactions with the adults. The consultants taught skills to 9 staff members through brief mini-workshops, direct observation of the staff members' use of the skills during r

Reaching consensus: the process of recommending treatment decisions for Alzheimer's patients.

Observational and interview data obtained from nurse caregivers and family members of patients with late-stage Alzheimer's disease were analyzed to explicate the nursing role in advance proxy planning. A four-phase model, Achieving Consensus: Decision Making to Determine Treatment Options for Patients with Alzheimer's Disease, was developed. Patient decline, family coping, professional development of nursing staff, and nursing unit philosophy were community characteristics found to be important antecedents to the process of reaching consensus. Achieving consensus constructs included interactiv

Managing health changes for people with a learning disability in a residential care home setting.

BACKGROUND: People with learning disability (LD) have complex comorbidities that develop at an earlier age than the general population and with which they are now living longer. Identification, assessment and management of these conditions is important but challenging. AIM: To develop resources with care staff to enable them to recognise and manage changes and decline in the health of a person with a LD. METHODS: Two resources (PIP-LD and CIRC) were developed through undertaking a literature review; networking with experts; and collaborating with staff in the care homes for people with a LD.

Supporting Health Care Staff With Family Meals During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Family meals provide a unique opportunity for families to eat well and engage positively with each other. In response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, a new initiative to support health care staff to share healthy meals with their families was developed. At a hospital in Queensland, Australia, dietetic staff collaborated with the on-site food service retailer to develop and offer a range of hot meals that staff could take home for their families at the end of their day. The meals were nutritious, reasonably priced, and designed to feed a family o

Everyone's business: developing an integrated model of care to respond to child abuse in a pediatric hospital setting.

In pediatric hospitals, social work plays a central role in the prevention, identification, and management of child abuse. Children who are suspected of having been abused or neglected require an evaluation of their psychosocial situation. As an integral member of the health care team, the social worker is well placed to undertake comprehensive psychosocial assessments including information on the child's development, parental capacity, family, and community supports. Current practice approaches have seen a shift away from a narrow, "expert" approach to child protection. This article describes

Staff feeding practices, food neophobia, and educational level in early education and care settings: A cross-sectional study.

Feeding practices in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings are important for the development of healthy eating habits early in life. However, there is limited research on feeding practices among ECEC staff working with infants and toddlers, and how these practices relate to staff education. This study assessed the feeding practices, level of food neophobia, and participation in shared meals among ECEC staff, and examined whether there were differences in feeding practices related to education and shared meals. Furthermore, we explored the association between food neophobia levels

Streamlining Radiology Workflows Through the Development and Deployment of Automated Microservices.

Microservices are a software development approach where an application is structured as a collection of loosely coupled, independently deployable services, each focusing on executing a specific purpose. The development of microservices could have a significant impact on radiology workflows, allowing routine tasks to be automated and improving the efficiency and accuracy of radiologic tasks. This technical report describes the development of several microservices that have been successfully deployed in a tertiary cancer center, resulting in substantial time savings for radiologists and other st

Implications of research staff demographics for psychological science.

Long-standing research traditions in psychology have established the fundamental impact of social categories, such as race and gender, on people's perceptions of themselves and others, as well as on general human cognition and behavior. However, there is a general tendency to ignore research staff demographics (e.g., researchers' race and gender) in research development and research reports. Variation in research staff demographics can exert systematic and scientifically informative influences on results from psychological research. Consequently, research staff demographics need to be consider

Staff burn-out prevention and stress management.

In many ways, adolescent seasonal camp staff are asked to do what no parent would likely be capable of doing: to be best friend, role model, and risk manager for a group of young strangers. The high expectations for camp responsibility converge at a time when the developmental stages of most camp staff and their growing skill sets may be most challenged. What we ask of seasonal staff may, in fact, be at direct odds with their developmental capabilities as adolescents. This conflict may be a primary source of daily hassle-type stress, which has been shown to have tremendous impact on health and
