It is often possible to elicit the stapedius reflex in patients suffering from recessive X-linked progressive mixed deafness syndrome with stapes gusher. The presence of an air-bone gap in the audiogram and the ability to elicit the stapedius reflex are conflicting. Measurements were performed on two patients who were suffering from this syndrome, to establish whether the hearing loss was of the mixed or purely sensorineural type. The stapedius muscle is a very small skeletal muscle that connects the pyramidal eminence to the stapes through the stapedial tendon. It is very rare that stapedius muscle and tendon are congenitally absent; however, this has been reported previously in the literature and the current report. UNLABELLED: Moebius Sequence has been described as a pathology which involves the VI and VII cranial nerves, causing facial palsy. Acoustic reflexes are elicited by a high intensity stimulation of the stapedius and the tensor tympani muscles. The VII cranial nerve is responsible for innervating the stapedius muscle. No acoustic reflexes are expected for individuals with this Sequence.

An unusual acoustic reflex response was documented by immittance recording in a patient with acute facial palsy. The amplitude of the stapedial response to sustained stimulation was reduced when recorded from the affected side, suggesting the facial nerve was affected proximal to the stapedius muscle. 19 patients with the clinical diagnosis vestibular neuritis, i.e., cases with unilaterally ENG verified abolished or reduced caloric reactions but without symptoms of central nervous involvement or hearing impairment, participated in the study. In addition to ENG examinations and Békésy audiometry all patients were submitted to stapedius reflex tests and auditory brainstem response examinations (ABR) for signs of subclinical auditory nerve engagement. In all but one of the 19 patients the caloric reactions improved; 8 of the 13 patients available for tests after one year recovered completely.

Four sibs with progressive, bilateral conductive hearing loss are presented. Symmetrical hearing loss averaging 30-60 dB (0.125-8 kHz) became apparent between 8 and 24 years of age. The use of impedance audiometry for determining hearing threshold and locating hearing impairments was investigated in 112 people exposed to occupational noise. Decay and recovery of the ipsilateral and contralateral stapedius reflex were studied in eight normal hearing subjects. The activity of the intra-aural muscle was recorded as a change of the ear's acoustic impedance in response to prolonged stimulation at 2 000 Hz. Impedancemetry gives important information in otospongiosis, both for relative compliance and impedance audiometry. The present investigation evaluates the effectiveness of NaF treatment in modifying the natural course of subclinical otosclerosis, as monitored by the stapedius reflex. The study was carried out on 128 relatives of patients suffering from surgically confirmed footplate otosclerosis. The audiometric findings on 23 patients with diquited hypothyroidism for a minimum of 4 months to a maximum of 20 years are presented.
