Danggui Sini Decoction normalizes the intestinal microbiota and serum metabolite levels to treat sciatica.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Danggui Sini Decoction (DGSD), which is commonly used to treat sciatica, has been shown to have an analgesic effect, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, Danggui Sini Decoction was shown to normalize the intestinal microbiota and serum metabolite levels to exert an analgesic effect. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to elucidate the therapeutic effects of DGSD on sciatica and the underlying mechanisms involved. METHODS: In this study, we conducted chronic constriction injury (CCI) model. Mecobalamin and DGSD were administered to CCI rats. Behaviou

First fatal human bloodstream infection caused by Macrococcus caseolyticus subsp. caseolyticus in China: genomic insights into virulence and antimicrobial resistance.

BACKGROUND: Macrococcus caseolyticus is a Gram-positive bacterium mainly isolated from dairy products and animal skin and is usually associated with animal infections. M. caseolyticus comprises two subspecies, M. caseolyticus subsp. caseolyticus and M. caseolyticus subsp. hominis. Here, we report a fatal bloodstream infection caused by M. caseolyticus subsp. caseolyticus in China and characterize the clinical isolate by genomic and phenotypic analyses. METHODS: Strain WH712 was isolated from the blood culture of a 91-year-old male patient and identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ion

Electro-acupuncture promotes gut motility and alleviates functional constipation by regulating gut microbiota and increasing butyric acid generation in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in the gut microbiota and intestinal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels are implicated in the pathogenesis of functional constipation (FC). Electro-acupuncture (EA) has been shown to improve constipation-related symptoms and rebalance the gut microbiota. However, it is currently unknown whether the gut microbiota is a key mechanistic target for EA or how EA promotes gut motility by regulating the gut microbiota and SCFAs. Therefore, we assessed the effects of EA in FC mice and pseudo-germfree (PGF) mice to address these questions. METHODS: Forty female Kunming mice

The nasal microbiota in infants with cystic fibrosis in the first year of life: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections and subsequent airway inflammation occur early in the life of infants with cystic fibrosis. However, detailed information about the microbial composition of the respiratory tract in infants with this disorder is scarce. We aimed to undertake longitudinal in-depth characterisation of the upper respiratory tract microbiota in infants with cystic fibrosis during the first year of life. METHODS: We did this prospective cohort study at seven cystic fibrosis centres in Switzerland. Between Feb 1, 2011, and May 31, 2014, we enrolled 30 infants with a diagnosi

Effects of glass ionomer and microfilled composite subgingival restorations on periodontal tissue and subgingival biofilm: a 6-month evaluation.

BACKGROUND: This 6-month study evaluated the effects of resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGI) and microfilled composite (MC) subgingival restorations on periodontal tissues and subgingival biofilm. METHODS: Fifty-four periodontally healthy patients were assigned as follows: group 1 (N = 18), root exposure (RE) without non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) treated with coronally positioned flap (CPF); group 2 (N = 18), RE with NCCL treated RMGI restorations plus CPF; group 3 (N = 18), RE with NCCL treated with MC restorations plus CPF. Probing depth (PD), visible local plaque score (PL), an

Circulation of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia coli in Wild and Domestic Waterfowl in Ukraine.

Background: Antibiotic resistance is becoming an increasingly urgent problem for human and animal health due to the widespread use of antibiotics in medicine, veterinary medicine, and agriculture. At the same time, the natural reservoirs of antibiotic-resistant pathogens remain unclear. Wild birds may play a role in this due to their biology. Escherichia coli is a representative indicator pathogen for antibiotic resistance studies. Materials and Methods: In 2020-2021, sampling of feces and cloacal swabs from six species of wild waterfowl (Eurasian wigeon Anas penelope, Eurasian teal Anas crecc

The association of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw with Actinomyces spp. infection.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) represents a complication of bisphosphonate treatment that responds poorly to standard treatment. In a retrospective cohort study we investigated a possible role of Actinomyces spp. in the pathogenesis of MRONJ. Deep biopsies of necrotic bone were collected during surgical treatment of MRONJ and evaluated by histology and microbiology for the presence of Actinomyces spp. Microbiological, demographic and clinicpathological data were analyzed for risk of Actinomyces-associated MRONJ. Between 2005 and 2014, 111 patients suffering from histologic

The Role of the Gut Microbiota in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is an effective treatment for patients with high-risk hematologic malignancies. Over the last decade, gut microbiota composition during allo-HCT has been associated with patients' outcomes. Treatment-related factors, in particular the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and the conditioning regimen, frequently induce gut dysbiosis, which is associated with immune dysregulation, toxicity, and adverse outcomes, particularly after allo-HCT. Microbial metabolites further modulate immune responses and therapeutic efficacy. Emerging microbiota-t

Understanding the Mechanisms of Diet and Outcomes in Colon, Prostate, and Breast Cancer; Malignant Gliomas; and Cancer Patients on Immunotherapy.

Cancer patients often ask which foods would be best to consume to improve outcomes. This is a difficult question to answer as there are no case-controlled, prospective studies that control for confounding factors. Therefore, a literature review utilizing PubMed was conducted with the goal to find evidence-based support for certain diets in specific cancer patients-specifically, we reviewed data for colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, malignant gliomas, and cancer patients on immunotherapy. Improved outcomes in colon cancer and patients on immunotherapy were found with high-fiber diet

Unlocking the Microbial Symphony: The Interplay of Human Microbiota in Cancer Immunotherapy Response.

IntroductionThe emergence of cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, offering remarkable outcomes for patients across various malignancies. However, the heterogeneous response to immunotherapy underscores the necessity of understanding additional factors influencing treatment efficacy. Among these factors, the human microbiota has garnered significant attention for its potential role in modulating immune response. Body: This review explores the intricate relationship between the human microbiota and cancer immunotherapy, highlighting recent advances and potential mechanisms u
