Bacterial Contamination in Stored Blood for Transfusion and Associated Infectious Risks Among Patients with Cancer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer often require supportive transfusion therapy. However, this approach is undermined by the risk of bacterial contamination. This study assessed the bacterial contamination rate, identified the bacterial contaminants and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns; and the associated infectious risk to patients with cancer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, in southwestern Uganda. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study used a pre-transfusion aliquot of donor blood or components for blood culture. Positive cultures were identified and their anti

Vaginal Bacteria in Mares and the Occurrence of Antimicrobial Resistance.

Antibiotics are added to semen extenders in insemination doses but their effect on the vaginal microbiota of the inseminated female is unknown. The objectives of this study were to define the equine vaginal microbiota and its antimicrobial resistance, and to determine whether it changes after exposure to antibiotics in semen extenders. Vaginal swabs were taken prior to sham-insemination (day 0), and again on days 3, 7, and 14 after insemination. Isolated bacteria were identified by MALDI-TOF and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by microdilution. The bacteria isolated from the vagina dif

Time-dependent microbial colonisation of temporary external fixations: a prospective descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: The temporary use of external fixators is an established method for stabilising fractures, particularly for injuries that do not initially allow definitive treatment. Despite its frequent use, it remains unclear whether the interval between fixator application and subsequent definitive fracture treatment affects microbial colonisation of the fixation screws prior to internal fixation. METHODS: This prospective, single-centre study included patients aged 18 years or older between April 2023 and April 2024 who received a temporary fixator during initial fracture management. During d

From clean to colonized: microbial dynamics of bed linen over time.

Bed linen can act as a reservoir for microorganisms transferred from skin, dust, and the environment. Despite the importance of linen hygiene in healthcare and hospitality, evidence on bed-changing frequency is limited, with studies reporting only cross-sectional microbiological data. This study investigated longitudinal bacterial and fungal colonization of bed linen over 4 weeks in a domestic environment. Nine participants used polycotton bed linen for 1 day to 4 weeks. Swatches were collected from the pillow, hip, and foot regions, analyzed using viable counts and amplicon-based sequencing.

Short-time thermal inactivation of surrogates of the public transport microbiome with a low-cost thermoresistometer.

In this study, the thermal inactivation of the bacterial genera Staphylococcus, Enterococcus and Burkholderia, which can be found in public transportation environments, as well as the bacteriophage MS2 as a surrogate for potential viral pathogens are investigated. To quantify the thermal inactivation characteristic, an automated and inexpensive thermoresistometer is constructed and set up, which enables the microorganisms to be exposed to short-term thermal shocks. The time dependent temperature curves were measured to account for heat-up and cooling times. Afterwards, the microorganisms were

Folliculitis et perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens controlled with a combination therapy: systemic antibiosis (metronidazole plus clindamycin), dermatosurgical approach, and high-dose isotretinoin.

Folliculitis et perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It is a suppurative process that involves the scalp, eventually resulting in extensive scarring and irreversible alopecia. The condition is also known as 'acne necrotica miliaris' or 'Proprionibacterium' folliculitis. Most often the disease affects men of African-American or African-Caribbean descent between 20 and 40 years of age. The clinical picture is determined by fluctuating painful fistule-forming conglomerates of abscesses in the region of the occipital scalp. The cause of scalp foll

Identification of coagulase-negative staphylococci with the API staph system.

A kit for the identification of staphylococci based on the biochemical criteria proposed by Kloos and Schleifer (W.E. Kloos and K.H. Schleifer, J. Clin. Microbiol., 1:82-88, 1975) is now available commercially. The system was used to identify 100 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from various body sites as the primary etiological agent of clinical infection. The increasing importance of staphylococci and their resistance to antibiotics provided the rationale for such an investigation. Over 90% of the Staphylococcus isolates were easily identified as to their species on the b

Exploring Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Diversity from Artisanal Llama Sausages: Assessment of Technological and Safety Traits.

Llama sausage is still produced following artisanal procedures, with the autochthonous microbiota being mainly responsible for the fermentation process. In this work, the taxonomical identification and technological-safety criteria of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from two different productions of llama sausages (P: pilot and A: artisanal) were investigated. Staphylococcus (S) equorum and S. saprophyticus were the species most frequently found in P production, followed by S. succinis and S. warneri; a wider species variability was observed in A factory being S. equorum, S. ca

Cutaneous infections in wrestlers.

CONTEXT: Cutaneous infections are common in wrestlers. Although many are simply a nuisance in the everyday population, they can be problematic to wrestlers because such infections may result in disqualification from practice or competition. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are therefore important. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Medline and PubMed databases, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and UpToDate were searched through 2012 with the following keywords in various combinations: skin infections, cutaneous infections, wrestlers, athletes, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, skin an

Distribution of mec regulator genes in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus clinical strains.

The distributions of the mec regulator genes mecI and mecR1, which were identified on the chromosome of mecA-carrying Staphylococcus aureus N315, in methicillin-resistant staphylococci isolated in Japan and various countries were studied. Screening by dot blot hybridization by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified probes revealed that at least the 5'-end region of the mecR1 gene was present in all strains tested, whereas about 40% of the strains were negative for the mecI gene. The data suggested that these regulator genes were the original components of the additional mec region DNA

Facultatively Anaerobic Staphylococci Enable Anaerobic Cutibacterium Species to Grow and Form Biofilms Under Aerobic Conditions.

Facultatively anaerobic Staphylococcus spp. and anaerobic Cutibacterium spp. are among the most prominent bacteria on human skin. Although skin microbes generally grow as multispecies biofilms, few studies have investigated the interaction between staphylococci and Cutibacterium spp. in dual-species biofilms. Here, we measured the mono- and dual-species biofilm formation of four staphylococcal species (S. epidermidis, S. hominis, S. capitis, and S. aureus) and two Cutibacterium spp. (C. acnes and C. avidum) cultured in vitro under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The biofilms were quanti

Bacterial flora of semen collected from Danish warmblood stallions by artificial vagina.

Semen samples were collected from 21 Danish Warmblood stallions by the Colorado artificial vagina (Colorado AV, 14 samples) or by the Missouri artificial vagina (Missouri AV, 7 samples). The semen was examined bacteriologically by direct plating (DP) on blood agar plates, and by plating of semen swabs stored in Stuart's transport media (TM) at 4 degrees C for 1-4 days. No significant differences were observed between results obtained by DP and cultures of identical TM samples. Of the 21 samples examined, only 1 TM (4.8%) and 2 DP samples (9.5%) were sterile, while the rest yielded a predominan

Viability-Resolved Metagenomics Reveals Antagonistic Colonization Dynamics of Staphylococcus epidermidis Strains on Preterm Infant Skin.

Preterm infants are at increased risk of infections caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) that colonize skin. Technical barriers in sequencing low-microbial-biomass skin swabs from preterm infants hinder attempts to gain a strain-level understanding of CoNS colonization dynamics within their developing skin microbiome. Here, the microbiome of five skin sites and available stool was studied from four preterm infants hospitalized over their first 2 months of life. We used propidium monoazide treatment of samples to enrich for the viable microbiome and metagenomic shotgun sequencing t
