Infective endocarditis in pregnancy: Case report and review of the literature.

Infective endocarditis in pregnancy is associated with high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality and is estimated to complicate approximately 1 in 100,000 pregnancies. We report the case of a 33-year-old patient who presented at 30 weeks and 3 days gestation in her third pregnancy. The patient described a 3 week history of feeling generally unwell, an episode of temporary speech disturbance, right shoulder tip pain, left subscapular pain on inspiration and chest discomfort. Investigations included an echocardiogram, which revealed a large mobile mass on the aortic coronary cusp and a sma

Catastrophic case of suppurative, embolic and fistulating infective endocarditis causing complete heart block.

Complete heart block, aortic root abscess and aortic valve regurgitation are well-recognized complications of infective endocarditis of the aortic valve. Splenic abscess and aorto-cavitary fistula are rarer phenomena and are indicative of calamitous infection. The authors present the case of an otherwise healthy 61-year-old man presenting with a 2-month history of non-specific symptoms, who developed suppurative endocarditis with a fistulating aortic root abscess, combined with severe sepsis, splenic embolization and complete heart block. Staphylococcus lugdunensis was the causative bacterium

Harnessing the power of PLA-PEG nanoparticles for Linezolid delivery against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

This study deals with the development of novel poly(lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol) nanoparticles (PLA-PEG NPs) for the efficient and prolonged delivery of Linezolid (LNZ), a synthetic antibacterial agent used against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A two-step synthetic strategy based on carbodiimide coupling and copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition was first exploited for the conjugation of PLA with PEG. The encapsulation of LNZ into medium-molecular-weight PLA-PEG NPs was carried out by different methods including nanoprecipitation and dialysis. The optimal PLA-

Scalp microbiome: a guide to better understanding scalp diseases and treatments.

The scalp microbiome represents an array of microorganisms important in maintaining scalp homeostasis and mediating inflammation. Scalp microbial dysregulation has been implicated in dermatologic conditions including alopecia areata (AA), dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD), scalp psoriasis (SP) and folliculitis decalvans (FD). Understanding the impact of scalp microbial dysbiosis gives insight on disease pathophysiology and guides therapeutic decision making. Herein we review the scalp microbiome and its functional role in scalp conditions by analysis of metagenomic medical literature in al

Commensal Staphylococci attenuate Staphylococcus aureus skin colonization and inflammation via AHR-dependent signaling.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of bacterial skin infections in several inflammatory skin diseases, however, is rarely detected on healthy skin. Skin barrier defects, such as in atopic dermatitis, promote S. aureus colonization by yet unknown mechanism. In our previous work we found that in healthy skin commensal staphylococci including Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SL) protect against S. aureus skin colonization, however, the microbiome-mediated protection is lost in inflammatory skin. Here, we investigated how microbiome-derived factors c
