Complementary and Alternative Medicine Therapies in relation to Self-Reported Better Sleep across Racial and Ethnic Groups in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) approaches vary across race and ethnicity, reflecting different cultural practices. However, its relationship with sleep is understudied. We investigated cross-sectional CAM-sleep associations across racial and ethnic groups. METHODS: In the nationally-representative 2012 National Health Interview Survey, participants identified their most important CAM therapies and whether the therapy yielded 'better sleep' (yes/no). We used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence interv

"It's a reality that we in medicine should catch up with": Physician's attitudes about self-sourced and managed abortion in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The evolution of medical standards in stigmatized areas like abortion is influenced by medical, political, and social factors. Self-sourcing and managing medication abortion (SSMA) is on the rise in the United States, where individuals obtain medications to end their pregnancies outside traditional medical settings. Physician attitudes towards SSMA are not well understood, despite physicians' role in setting care standards, providing medical oversight, and de-stigmatizing healthcare both within and outside clinical environments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We interviewed 40 physicians

Characterization of cases and analysis of First-instance Judgments in Ethical Proceedings at the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of the State of São Paulo.

In Brazil, veterinary medicine is regulated by a resolution that sets out the Code of Ethics of the Veterinary Medical Profession, established by the Federal Council, which has national jurisdiction and compliance with which is monitored by the regional councils in each state. Some regional councils have reported an increase in the number of complaints of unethical proceedings in recent years, although this trend is not uniform across all Brazilian states. This increase has not yet been consistently documented. In this paper, a quantitative and qualitative description of cases of ethical infra

Transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation (tES and TMS) for addiction medicine: A consensus paper on the present state of the science and the road ahead.

There is growing interest in non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) as a novel treatment option for substance-use disorders (SUDs). Recent momentum stems from a foundation of preclinical neuroscience demonstrating links between neural circuits and drug consuming behavior, as well as recent FDA-approval of NIBS treatments for mental health disorders that share overlapping pathology with SUDs. As with any emerging field, enthusiasm must be tempered by reason; lessons learned from the past should be prudently applied to future therapies. Here, an international ensemble of experts provides an overv

Efficacy of acamprosate for alcohol dependence in a family medicine setting in the United States: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Acamprosate has been found to enhance rates of complete abstinence and to increase percent days abstinent (PDA) from alcohol relative to placebo treatment. As most U.S. clinical trials of acamprosate have been conducted in alcohol and other drug specialty clinics, there is a need to examine the efficacy of acamprosate in generalist settings. This study tested the efficacy of acamprosate versus placebo on the primary study outcome of PDA in the treatment of alcohol-dependent patients in a family medicine setting. Secondary study outcomes included percent heavy drinking days (%HDD) a
