Importance of environmental context in the development of amphetamine- or apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior after single and multiple doses.

The present study was designed to determine whether single and repeated pretreatment regimens with amphetamine or apomorphine differ in the context-dependency of sensitization of stereotyped behavior. Male CF-1 mice that were pretreated with a single high dose of amphetamine (14 mg/kg intraperitoneally [IP]) or apomorphine (40 mg/kg subcutaneously [SC]) only became sensitized to a lower test dose of amphetamine (7 mg/kg IP) or apomorphine (3 mg/kg SC) when placed in an environment that was the same as the pretreatment environment. However, animals pretreated with 3 high doses (24-h apart) of a

Development of spontaneous stereotyped behavior in deer mice: effects of early and late exposure to a more complex environment.

Abnormal repetitive behaviors such as stereotypies are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and are often observed under conditions of environmental restriction, particularly early in development. Few studies, however, have systematically assessed the effects of environmental enrichment and almost no information is available as to whether a sensitive period exists for such enrichment effects. We hypothesized that spontaneous stereotypies exhibited by deer mice housed under standard laboratory conditions were the result of environmental restriction and that a sensitive period exists for

Effect of no synthesis inhibition on striatal dopamine release and stereotyped behavior induced by a single administration of methamphetamine.

1. The authors performed both microdialysis and behavioral measurement in each of rats, in order to examine effects of nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (LNAME;30 mg/kg,i.p.) on striatal dopamine (DA) release and stereotypy induced by a single administration of methamphetamine (MA)(4 mg/kg,s.c.), simultaneously. 2. LNAME administered prior to MA significantly decreased level of locomotion-stereotypy rating scores induced by MA. 3. In the same animals, LNAME had no effect on MA-induced striatal DA release. 4. The results suggest that NO synthesis inhibition

Distinct patterns of GABAergic interneuron pathology in autism are associated with intellectual impairment and stereotypic behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in sociability and communication and the presence of repetitive behaviors. How specific pathological alterations of the brain contribute to the clinical profile of autism spectrum disorder remains unknown. We previously found that a specific type of inhibitory interneuron is reduced in number in the autism spectrum disorder prefrontal cortex. Here, we assessed the relationship between interneuron reduction and autism spectrum disorder symptom severity. We collected clinical records from autism spectrum disorde

Reducing stress and stereotypic behaviors in captive female pygmy slow lorises (Nycticebus pygmeaus).

Improving captive conditions of pygmy slow lorises (Nekaris and Nijman have recently suggested that the pygmy slow loris should be called the pygmy loris and is distinctive enough to warrant a new genus, Xanthonycticebu) (Nycticebus pygmeaus) poses many challenges because detailed aspects of their lives in the wild are incomplete. This hinders efforts to replicate sustainable environments for them. To improve their well-being in captivity, eight rescued female pygmy slow lorises at the Japan Monkey Center (JMC) were socially housed in two types of groups following their solitary housing: two p

BDNF Alleviates Microglial Inhibition and Stereotypic Behaviors in a Mouse Model of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a severe mental illness characterized by obsessions and compulsions. However, its underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. Recent studies have suggested that neuroimmune dysregulation is involved in the pathogenesis of OCD. To investigate the role of microglia in this disorder, we established a pharmacological mouse model by using the serotonin (5-HT) 1A/1B receptor agonist RU24969 to mimic monoamine dysregulation in OCD, and we examined the morphological and functional alterations of microglia in this model. We found that RU24969 treatment led to c

Changes in Stereotypical Behavior Following Chlorpromazine Termination: Polypharmcy Effects on Response Class Membership.

OBJECTIVES: A paucity of information exists relating to the possible biological and environmental interactions influencing the occurrence of stereotypical behavior. In particular, there is limited research on the effects of psychotropic medication use on stereotypy presentation in individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities such as intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: We studied the stereotypy of a man with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability across 2 years. The topographies of stereotypical behavior included walking in circles, head tappin

Stereotypical Escape Behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans Allows Quantification of Effective Heat Stimulus Level.

A goal of many sensorimotor studies is to quantify the stimulus-behavioral response relation for specific organisms and specific sensory stimuli. This is especially important to do in the context of painful stimuli since most animals in these studies cannot easily communicate to us their perceived levels of such noxious stimuli. Thus progress on studies of nociception and pain-like responses in animal models depends crucially on our ability to quantitatively and objectively infer the sensed levels of these stimuli from animal behaviors. Here we develop a quantitative model to infer the perceiv

mGluR5-antagonist mediated reversal of elevated stereotyped, repetitive behaviors in the VPA model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are highly disabling developmental disorders with a population prevalence of 1-3%. Despite a strong genetic etiology, there are no current therapeutic options that target the core symptoms of ASD. Emerging evidence suggests that dysfunction of glutamatergic signaling, in particular through metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) receptors, may contribute to phenotypic deficits and may be appropriate targets for pharmacologic intervention. This study assessed the therapeutic potential of 2-methyl-6-phenylethyl-pyrididine (MPEP), an mGluR5-receptor antagonist,

D-cycloserine improves sociability and spontaneous stereotypic behaviors in 4-week old mice.

Balb/c mice are a model of impaired sociability and social motivation relevant to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Impaired sociability of 8-week old Balb/c mice is attenuated by agonists of the glycine(B) site on the NMDA receptor, such as d-cycloserine. Although ASDs are often recognized in toddlerhood, there is interest in earlier identification (e.g., before 6 months) and disease-modifying interventions to improve functional outcomes. Thus, we wondered if d-cycloserine could improve sociability in 4-week old Balb/c mice, similar to its effects in 8-week old mice. d-Cycloserine improved me

[Stereotyped behaviors and compulsive complaints of pain improved by fluvoxamine in two cases of frontotemporal dementia].

There have been no systematic efforts to manage and treat patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), but Perry described pharmacologic interventions for some behavioral syndromes in 2001. In Perry's report, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) were recommended as first choice drugs because they were well tolerated and might have an effect on some symptoms such as compulsive symptoms and eating abnormalities. Some reports were presented concerning Japanese FTD patients which showed the effect of SSRI on stereotyped behaviors and eating abnormalities by Nishikawa, et al. (2001), Iked

Hair follicle renewal: organization of stem cells in the matrix and the role of stereotyped lineages and behaviors.

Hair follicles (HFs) are renewed via multipotent stem cells located in a reservoir (the bulge); however, little is known about how they generate multi-tissue HFs from a proliferative zone (the matrix). To address this issue, we temporally induced clonal labeling during HF growth. Challenging the prevailing hypothesis, we found that the matrix contains restricted self-renewing stem cells for each inner structure. These cells are located around the dermal papilla forming a germinative layer. They occupy different proximodistal sectors and produce differentiated cells along the matrix radial axis

[Interaction of stereotypic behavior in mice and effects of activation of presynaptic dopaminergic receptors in extinction and amnesia].

Using the methods of agonistic confrontations of C57BL/6J mice for formation of aggressive and submissive types of behavior and passive avoidance training we investigated the influence of activation of dopamine presynaptic receptors on retention of a memory trace during extinction and amnesia. Autoreceptor agonist (+)3PPP (2 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection) impaired learning and retention of a memory trace during extinction and strengthened the amnestic influence of animal detention in a dangerous compartment on the training day only in aggressive mice. In submissive mice, (+) 3PPP improved t

Person memory: the role of traits, group stereotypes, and specific behaviors in the cognitive representation of persons.

Subjects read a list of statements describing behaviors manifested by a target person who had previously been described by a set of personality trait adjectives. Some statements referred to the person by name, whereas others referred to him as a member of a stereotyped social group. The consistency of the behaviors with expectancies based on these general target characterizations was varied. Results of Experiment 1 showed that when the trait-adjective characterization of the target and the target's group membership had similar implications, the relative ease of recalling behaviors that were co

The Effect of Tai Chi Chuan Training on Stereotypic Behavior of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This quasi-experimental study investigated effects of Tai Chi Chuan training on stereotypic behavior of children with autism spectrum disorder. Twenty-three participants (mean age = 9.60 ± 1.40 years) were assigned to experimental (N = 12) and control (N = 11) groups. The experimental group received 12 weeks of Tai Chi training and all participants had pre, post, and one-month follow-up assessments. Stereotypic behavior measured using Gilliam Autism Rating Scale 2 Scores, was significantly altered by ~ 25% in the Tai Chi Chuan group. Behavioral change was maintained at follow up since there wa

Tailored Enrichment Strategies and Stereotypic Behavior in Captive Individually Housed Macaques (Macaca spp.).

The welfare of nonhuman animals in captivity is widely dependent on the natural psychological, physical, and behavioral needs of the animals and how adequately these needs are met. Inability to engage in natural behaviors can lead to chronic stress and expression of stereotypic behavior. The majority of research on decreasing stereotypic behavior in captivity addresses problems at the group level and does not account for individual variability in each animal's needs, history, and preferences. This study combined physiological and behavioral measures of well being to comprehensively assess the

The purposes of this study were to examine differences in symptoms, aging-stereotyped beliefs about management of symptoms, and health-promoting behaviors depending on a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and to investigate the associations between symptoms, aging-stereotyped beliefs, and health-promoting behaviors in 171 older Korean women. Compared to older women without osteoarthritis, those with osteoarthritis reported significantly more symptoms, a higher level of aging-stereotyped beliefs, and a lower level of health-promoting behaviors. Regardless of osteoarthritis, older women suffered from m

Pyrroloquinoline quinone prevents MK-801-induced stereotypical behavior and cognitive deficits in mice.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), an essential nutrient, antioxidant, redox modulator, and nerve growth factor, prevents cognitive deficits associated with oxidative stress-induced neurodegeneration. Previous molecular imaging studies also demonstrate that PQQ binds to N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. In this study, we investigated the effects of PQQ on stereotypical behaviors and cognitive deficits induced by MK-801, a non-competitive NMDA antagonist used to model schizophrenia. Mice were given repeated injections of MK-801 (0.5mg/kg/d) and PQQ (0.2, 2.0, or 20 μg/kg/d) for 60 days. Behav
